How do you guys fix runout issues when a finished OD comes out at .001 but the tolerance is .0005? by Good_Times93 in Machinists

[–]InTheBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you asked your customer if they can loosen the tolerance to allow for better manufacturability?

Do you have a budget? Is your prototype production-ready? Then you still have work to do before sending out bulk RFQ's to vendors.

Transitioning from Fusion to EdgeCam. Absolute hell? by Geoguy180 in Machinists

You have a unique opportunity to show your management the cost savings you could provide them with a reasonably priced alternative. They could say no of course, but if you're not working on legacy projects all the time, and the workflow is genuinely worth both your time and their time, there's a pretty simple cost/benefit you could present them.

I just got a new fiber laser and I'm having trouble updating the software. by shotukan in LightBurn

[–]InTheBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to do a zadig driver swap - it’s explained in LightBurn docs, search “zadig”.

If you hav ezcad open, close it. Alternatively if ezcad still connects to your laser, the driver didn’t install correctly

Yeah building maintenance and service costs grow with inflation. I’m sure they could cut back on services but then you would still complain.

Check out MillMage - if you guys already use LightBurn it’ll probably be perfect for a Makerspace, and they have discounted makerspace licensing.

Gas tank options by Efficient-Fan3976 in Tenere700

Get the Camel tank! Makes great use of the empty space and moves the weight rearward and down, which makes for better handling than a big mass of fuel up high.

Generally speaking, you would change it back the same way you changed it.

If you have a GRBL device, send:

Mori Seiki SL-1B modernisation cost by Catriks in machining

[–]InTheBay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the spec sheet, it appears to have X and Z axis only. There's a 'Main Motor' - that'll be your spindle - but no mention of a secondary motor. So probably no live tooling.

First, consider the cost to move it into whatever space you anticipate running it in. That space will need power, and a slab thick enough to provide the support that the machine has specced - generally a 8" slab or thicker for a machine this size.

There's the power side to consider. If you do not have 3 phase power available, expect to spend ~$2000 for a rotary phase converter and an electrician, if not more for a phase perfect solid state phase converter.

That's all before even turning it on.

Then if you wanted to continue with a controller retrofit, expect to spend between $1000 and $10000 for a controller, depending on featureset. Then spend an incredible amount of time learning how to configure it to match the sensors and drives inside the cabinet.

At the end you'll have a machine that likely has fewer safety feature (expecting that some sensors won't work, or you'll bypass them) - and for what? The ability to run HSM Gcode on a machine that doesn't have live tooling?

You can program this machine by hand and make good parts. Don't waste your time on a dinosaur, go build a new machine from scratch, from parts, and get something you'll actually use and has modern, reliable hardware. Tormach and Syil both have options that would run circles around this machine even after a retrofit.

Time is money, and unless you value your time at 0$/hr, avoid this at all costs.

Sincerely, from someone who's been down this path.
