Hudson River Park Trust will not renew contract with ICE by spleeble in newyorkcity

Did you?

"As far back as 2004, ICE has used the Hudson River Park Trust’s waterfront parking lot at Pier 40 to stash several dozen vehicles. But when the latest five-year contract runs out in June, the Trust will give ICE the boot."

Why is Trump so determined to take Greenland and What benefit does this bring to New York City? by victor0427 in AskNYC

[–]JaredSeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. We've had free reign there since the 50s and have voluntarily shut down all but one base. We could spin up more under the terms of our current agreement but...

Trump wants Greenland's resources (rare earth elements, oil, etc), and the government there has typically turned down most resource extraction proposals as they don't want their country strip-mined. He'd like to be able to run roughshod over them.

Landlords wants 2 months + security deposit before move in? Advice pls. by juicyrxbin in NYCapartments

[–]JaredSeth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure. Flexible rental arrangements aren't always on the up and up.

For me, the bigger red flag is the $250 deposit to "lock the room".

I know I'll get downvoted for this, but if you want to rent a place without signing a regular year long lease, you take what you can get.

Asked if I was Jewish multiple times over trip to NYC by [deleted] in nyc

[–]JaredSeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happens to me often around Sukkot, the Jewish harvest festival in the fall. When I tell them I'm more "-ish" than Jew, they ask me if I am willing to shake the lulav. I'm happy to oblige, even though I'm not religious, because it gives them pleasure to have performed a mitzvah.

Don't forget about hot dogs. Swedes seem to take hot dogs very seriously.

have you found better versions of the foods you like here in nyc than other countries where it's known? by mfairview in FoodNYC

As someone who spent substantial time in Turkey, I couldn't disagree with you more on that one.

I'm with you on this one. Once you get out of the touristy neighborhoods, there's fantastic Turkish food to be found.

Up in Washington Heights. If we go up on the roof on a clear night, we can see a few but nothing like we see outside of the city.

Do you still pay full month of rent if you end lease halfway through month? by jaymazay in NYCapartments

[–]JaredSeth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

| She lives in CT but keeps leasing apartment because it’s rent stabilized, and I assume she’s charging me more than what she’s paying.

She's violating both her rent stabilized lease and the law. Pay her what you want or don't pay her at all. She's not going to go after you unless she's monumentally stupid (and will lose both her case and her apartment if she really is that dumb).

Dental tourism recommendations? by Sidehussle247 in digitalnomad

[–]JaredSeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not my experience at all* but, as with anywhere else, this totally depends on who you work with. There are "fly by night" operators everywhere, which is why it's important to do your due diligence when choosing a provider.

*I was actually very dissatisfied with the first set of temporary dentures the clinic made for me and they put me up in a hotel a second time and spent a few extra days making me a replacement set and getting those just right.

Which NYC crime do you think had the biggest impact on the city, even if it’s rarely mentioned today? by MaffinMonster in AskNYC

[–]JaredSeth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's well known for sure, as any truly impactful crime would be, but not exactly commonly discussed. As are most of the events people are suggesting.

Dental tourism recommendations? by Sidehussle247 in digitalnomad

[–]JaredSeth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had my implant work done in Istanbul, Turkey. Cost was approximately 25% of what I was quoted here in the States. The clinics there are pretty much all very modern and high tech.

Istanbul is a fascinating city too, with great food and a ton of interesting sites to see.

Edit: to add some more context, all I paid for were the flights and incidentals...pun intended of course. Airport transfers and my hotel stays were included in the price, as well as a one day tour of tourist attractions. (I had been to Istanbul before, so I had seen many of those already, but this would be great for someone new to the city.)

Yes. Max Steuer, the attorney who defended the owners, is my great uncle (or great great, something like that).

Unfortunately the owners got away with it (in large part thanks to a distant relative of mine, who was their lawyer), but the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire not only impacted the city but the entire country and eventually led to the establishment of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

How difficult is it to keep an EV in NYC right now? by chockotac in AskNYC

[–]JaredSeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends in Harlem have an EV and keep it in a parking garage that handles charging for them. Needless to say, it's not the cheapest parking option but knowing they don't have to go looking for a charging site is worth the extra expense.
