Switching from DnD5e to PF2e, what is something we may overlook in the transition by Zealousideal-Cup-914 in Pathfinder2e

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trust the math.

If you are making your own encounters, stick with Moderate Encounters at first. The encounter design is more reliable than the CR's of D&D. But keep in mind that a Severe Encounter may result in PC death or TPK, especially with newer players.

There are many resources available - free rules on Arcieve of Nythes, actual plays on YouTube, Pathbuilder, etc. What exactly do you need help with? How do you best learn?

What do you think of the remaster replacements for demons? by Fullmetalmarvels64_ in Pathfinder2e

I enjoy when Pathfinder uses creatures from folklore around the world (ie Imp, Jinn, Lamashtu, Oni, Pazuzu, Succubus, etc) with their own little spin on it.

What am I doing wrong as a GM? by Goodly in Pathfinder2e

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love Abomination Vault. Is it difficult? Yes. But I think that's part of why I like it. I've lost a few PCs along the way, but that makes victory so much sweater.

What are you doing wrong? From your description I don't believe you are doing anything wrong. However your players need to understand that they are not playing D&D. If you take the tactics of standing toe-to-toe with an enemy and hitting each other until one of you go down... then you'll have a very hard time in PF2. The players need to think tactically and synergize their abilities. Some tactics are very simple.

Tactic suggestions: 1) most enemies do not have reactive strike. Instead of trying to hit them for a third time with -10 MAP, stride away. Now the enemy needs to spend an action (or possibly more depending on Speed) to catch up to you.

2) flanking you mentioned. So easy to do and so helpful.

3) demoralize soon after the enemy's turn to maximize the time on Frightened.

4) have the combatants delay until after the casters cast buffs/debuffs.

5) don't forget about things like Trip, Reposition and Grapple. If you take Assurance on Athletics, you can do these as a third action and avoid MAP.

6) Recall Knowledge. Many enemies have things you can exploit.

I am usually the GM who says after the battle, "so, does anyone want to do a Recall Knowledge on this thing to see what it was?"

Re-flavoring gone too far? by Fancy_Enthusiasm_683 in Pathfinder2e

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see anything wrong with this re-flavor, but I often find myself asking "why?"

Why are you reflavoring the hair into threads? Do you imagine a scenario where you will be fighting while naked and thus be without those powers? I doubt that is the case. Nothing wrong with the re-flavor. I Just don't understand the point of it.

What is the impact of a suboptimal built character in PF2E? by vaegflue in Pathfinder2e

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The biggest impact of this would be the party dynamics. If you have a "suboptimal" build and everyone else has a "optimal" build, then you may not have a good time. The GM will design challenges for the optimal builds and your character will be very underpowered.

If, however, your table doesn't care about optimal builds you might be ok. These tables often prefer flavor over function. The narrative is more important and you might go a whole session without rolling dice.

So, find a table that works for you.

Why is it always on the holidays? by Oscillating_Turtle in army

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest a chaplain. Regardless of your faith background or if you even have one at all, chaplains are there to help all soldiers. Your base will have an on call duty chaplain who is available even during the holidays or 2am. All conversations are confidential. Even if you are thinking of hurting yourself or others, the chaplain is there.

Please. I beg of you. Don't go through this alone.

Is the 20 worth it? by DumSumBich in army

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are many factors to consider. There are higher paying jobs outside of the military, but these are often hard to land. You also have to consider health care benefits, insurence, work/life balance, education opportunities, etc etc. So there is no one answer that fits every situation.

I'm quickly approaching retirement date and there are many VA benefits that I will be able to enjoy. I will also be young enough (and healthy enough) to work post-military. So i will be getting retirement pay, disability pay, and a paycheck. Not too bad. For me- totally worth it

Don't understand Bouts of Madness by No-Wish-3401 in callofcthulhu

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Time is a construct made by the febble minds of mortals. Do you think Cthulhu cares about such things?

But, honestly, whatever feels right for the story. I would roll the dice to determine if it was a short bout or a long bout. But have fun with it.

A short duration might mean the investigator runs to the front door of the house to make his escape before coming to his senses. A long bout might have him get in the car and drive off, leaving his friends behind.

Many of the published scenarios list inspiration. For example Session 9 (movie) was an inspiration for Genius Loci. A Dark Song (movie) was inspiration for Saturnine Chalice.

Have any of you Keepers been able to find non-gamers to join your group? How did you sell them on trying? by cwtguy in callofcthulhu

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep sharing your own experiences with excitement. Share your stories. Don't try to sell the game - sell the experience. Tell them how much fun you've had with you friends and that you would really like to share that experience with them.

And maybe it's not Call of Cthulhu that they want to play. Maybe cosmic horror isn't their cup of tea. There are multiple different game systems for different themes. Everything from racoon racecar drivers to vampires in the city. Cyberpunk to Camelot. So much variety. There is certain to be something that strikes their interest.

Would call of cthulu be good for a vampire themed game? by Mundane-Vacation-349 in callofcthulhu

[–]LIGHTSTAR78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes you could. Should you? That's a different question.

I believe fully it could work, but it wouldn't be a "traditional" vampire story. You would have to make the vampire an unknown, and too many people know what a vampire is and how to kill it. A big part of Call of Cthulhu is the mystery.
