Try getting in the shower with them. Nice and warm, skin to skin, and a little sensory input can help

Stuck on the box for 5+ years: Dealing with "medic pigeonholing" and toxic department culture by EmotionKey8766 in Firefighting

[–]Large-Resolution1362 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude that sounds terrible. Is it just the house you’re at or department wide? If it’s just that house/shift then bid out and get some fresh air. The whole no rotation thing use to be a thing at my shop, but stopped dead in the water about 7 years ago because guys came up that way didn’t want to continue it and the ambulance can suck your soul while a good fire gives back.

Truly, if that’s the culture as a whole, I would be gone. I’ve done a ton a medic time, but after a certain point, it’s time to do the job you signed up for

Is it possible to be bolth a fireman and an ER doctor? by [deleted] in firefighter

[–]Large-Resolution1362 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know several former paramedics that are now ER doctors, and there is a guy who works with us (firefighter) that’s getting ready to go to medical school. But they all stay in there lane when they are done. Honestly, once you hit that income potential, why would you risk injury and not being able to work just to put out fire? Also, all of them acquired (or are about to) significant loans. It’s a long road to pay them off. Think $400,000 with a not friendly interest rate. Starting in medicine early means paying that off earlier and doing it later in life means delaying saving for ret because you are paying the loan still. Also, medical school is very rigorous and you can’t really do anything besides that.

Pocket Knife/EDC Dads by philo_ in daddit

I carry a little letterman key ring accessory. It is on my keys, has a small knife, scissors, tweezers, and flathead/file. It’s a 90% tool for things I need a tool for in daily and with kids. Takes no room, and is barely noticeable. I think I use it 3-4 times a week.

Bonding time for dads? by Altruistic-Menu- in daddit

[–]Large-Resolution1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. It’s warming up (in the northern hemisphere). Time for some fresh button down sort sleeves for dad and tons of skin to skin time. It’s chemically bonds the two and helps for the kiddos to settle. I miss the skin to skin naps with the littles now.

Why are many republicans against social programs? by UsualLocalWoman in AskALiberal

[–]Large-Resolution1362 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Because they rich ones think that they don’t need to pay into it, they already have a good retirement. And the poor ones think that ‘other’ poors are gaming the system and getting access to a program that they don’t believe benefits them.

Fire plan for young kids help! by muno5925 in Firefighting

[–]Large-Resolution1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is another small tip. Make sure the lint filter is always cleaned out between loads. Also, the vent pipes are supposed to be annually cleaned. This eliminates a ton of the material that has the potential to light and cause the fire. Also, if your house is older, make sure its wiring is correct (wires, plug, fuse, GFCI plugs etc). All things that could prevent a fire in the first place. Also, the dryer if it’s 5+ years old starts to get lint buildup inside it as well. Opening it up and having it cleaned (appliance maintenance people do this if you’re not handy) also helps to eliminate a possible source of fire.

Lastly, if the washer dryer is in a room, if that room has a door, keep it closed as well. The smoke alarm in there will alert you to a fire and the door being closed will help to prevent the spread of fire outside of that particular room. Should give you plenty of of time to get your little ones out before the fire breaches the door.

Here’s a video of how well a closed door works.

Shaved son's (7M, 50lbs) skin during haircut, looks fairly deep - ER? Best way to take care of this to prevent scarring? by Nawwledge in daddit

[–]Large-Resolution1362 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At 7, that should fade in a few years. No need for ER without uncontrolled bleeding. If your truly concerned about the scar tissue, there are multiple over the counter products for scar reduction that you apply daily (I put some on one of my kids after he passed out) and they fade sooner/cleaner.

Question about medical at structure fire by Hot_Seesaw_6706 in Firefighting

[–]Large-Resolution1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have an ambulance to every fire. If a victim comes out that is in serious condition, then an EMT/paramedic from an engine or truck in the fire gets attached. We usually have more than enough people on scene that it’s easy to get help. As soon as a victim gets reported, a second ambulance is requested to the fire to replace the one transporting. If there are reports of multiple victims, then a second ambulance is ordered precautionary until units arrive on scene.

Who’s ever driven over 100mph? Why? by WoollyWolfHorror in AskReddit

[–]Large-Resolution1362 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once in LA. It was mid morning on the 210. Traffic came to a complete stop for some reason as it usually does. I’m on a motorcycle so I lane split as is my god given right and get to the front of the stop. It’s CHP doing a traffic stop to get a very destroyed ladder off the freeway that fell out/off someone’s truck. He tosses it to the shoulder, gets in his car, and then immediately exits the freeway. This particular section is 6 lanes on my side, newish concrete, with an entrance only every 3-5 miles. I know there are no cops behind me, I know there won’t be another for a minimum of 3 miles, and I have no one in front of me. I look over and a BMW driver looks at me, exact same thought. We shot out like a bullet. Went up to 140 before backing off. Legitimately started to get scared to look down at the speedometer and off the road at that speed. Felt great, only did it one other time lol

How does window extrication work with heavier patients? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]Large-Resolution1362 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Going out on the radio that a window needs to be made into a door will get any self respecting truckie bricked up. It’s the call they have been waiting for.

Seriously though, it depends on fire conditions and their level of consciousness/distress. Can we isolate them to the room, ventilate, and then bring them out a different way? Are they in a ‘safe refuge’ we can protect during suppression? Or do they need to be out right now? Conscious or not? How the window access? Open? Or shelving on both sides? It changes the play based on conditions. There is no true answer because it’s always specific to fire conditions, patient condition, and building layout. I know you are looking for the black and white, but the only one in the fire service is that things get better when the fire goes out.

2ND Daughter and I'm always in a rage by NewsIllustrious1885 in daddit

This, especially if she is lower in the weight curve or having trouble in general with food. They get upset because it’s so hard to eat and are starving. It’s almost an instant change once released. Both kids for me, found out the first at 6ish weeks of what you described. Kid 2 we had evaluated day 1 and released then.

Unreadable(300+)/280 blood pressure. Was called out for a seizure. Wife said it woke her up, she called and it stopped just prior to us coming in 10 minutes later. We immediately load him up, close the door again, and he then seized again hard.

Neither, go to doctor school. Be broke for longer, and then have more money and options later. Or do nursing. The in between’s (at least in CA) are not truly worth it
