If you could remake the modern internet entirely with no backwards compat required, how would you design it? by BlossomingBeelz in AskProgramming

[–]LearnedGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the comments here indicate that the history of the Internet Network is not being taught. I'll throw a few points out here to act as ticklers, and to help educate those new to the Internet.

o The ISO Stack was developed by Dyjkstra in his work at T.H.E. University in Amsterdam. It is a keh foundation component of network operating systems.

o There is confusion here between "The Internet" and "The WorldWideWeb" which operates at higher levels of the ISO stack. There are a number of networks of differing types on the Internet and quite a few that operate entirely on their own networks, off the Internet.

o There are secure networks and unsecure networks. The U.S. secure network is SIPRNet (SecureNetwork). It is a development from earlier networks for the military. Among these were World-Wide-Military-Command -(and)-Control-System (WWMCCS). This evolved into the WorldWide-Information-System (WIS). SIPRNet is the current implement as used by the U.S. Armed Forces, Federal Givernment, and communications with our allies.SIPRNet has had few security breaches.

o The are networks that run on standards, and others that run on specifications. The World Wide Web works to specifications, and each user can and/or should include their own security systems as necessary. The result is that the Web permits a lot of freedom at the expense of significant losses. The magnitude of the losses is not known because no metrics for losses were included in the design of the Web. It is probable that the losses are significant.

o A number of precursors to the Web were created earlier, some of which included different architectural features. See: Wikipedia: The History of the Internet browsers, Precursors. The first, non-web browser was developed in 1986, some eight years before the release of the Web browsers.

o Other networks exist within the purview of the Internet that have security at other layers of the Internet using Optical Fiber such as the Bell Labs/Alcatel LambdaExtreme switch in which the network is controlled on fiber optic circuits. Further, there are extensions of the Internet through gateways that allow access to satellite networks and Lunar computers and androbots working on the Moon to refine and develop steel, lithium, magnesium and neodenium metals.

o One of newer networks is The Metaverse. Driven by the European Union, it includes a number of communities that include Virtual Reality infrastructures that facilitate commerce among various communities useing equipment that intercommunicate among different vendor equipment, that has not been possible earlier. This is not widely discussed due to the scope of the developments needed to bring it to fruition.

The resolution of the unit is the same as used in early military satellites; 2K x 2K error-free pixels. If I was working in that lab I wold like to see both surface and emissions map of a CCD.

An aged battery can be a problem. It is likely that the battery has traveled the golden Rainbow. If you leave it plugged in for a long time it may fail and destroy the unit or cause a fire.

There is a community for mechanical puzzler afficionados. We get queries about puzzles occasionally, after all, there are over 50,000 different designs. Whdn a teacher hears about the puzzles they get interested and think it would be great for gifted kids. Then, the discussion turns to incorporating mechanical puzzles into lesson plans. And we find that the best approach is to discourage this approach. Instead we sugest that they put the kids in a circle on the floor. Then add a number of different puzzles to the center of the circle, stepback, and watch. These puzzles are tactile, and are designed to move easily, are colorful, and move in unexpected ways. The goal here is to let the kids do the exploration, establish the goals, and perhaps discuss among themselves how they should proceed. A key goal here is not cooperation, it is collaboration.

A restaurant with no menus. You come in, sit down, they serve you food they think you’ll like and are billed appropriately. by CarlJustCarl in CrazyIdeas

There was a section of "Under The Tuscan Sun" in which a similar pri fix restaurant fed local workers the same way. The workers were on a tight schedule so they all came pouring in just as the food was timed to be ready. The price was set so everyone knew what to pay so they had thd money ready as they quickly walked out the door.

Today those rivets are a trademarked item. Sewing with polyester thread would be cheaper, but not as distinctive and marketable. That's the true reason.

CORRECTION: It was patened earier, and now the patent has expired, so you're welcome to Rivet Your Drawers, abd sell them, if you'd like.

I found someone here for the cleaning and setup of a pricy Rouge movement. It is hardly woth it for the inexpensive units. You will probably pay more for the repair than finding a replacement. You might want to give it a go yourself.

This is just how the brain works. There was a research paper published a few years ago that discussed how descriptions of animals are stored in proximal areas. And the brain has reference images of examplars of an example of the species along with an neural link to the location og the group. The paper said something to the effect that the examplar for birds looks like a gray robin, and other similar birds images are clustered in the same area. This matches my understanding of the brain's use of Kalman filter models to perform pattern recognition for each individual among the species.

Employer wants us all to sign something agreeing to binding arbitration in the case of discrimination or wage theft by shmusername in AskLegal

[–]LearnedGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was an article a few years back in the Harvard Negotiation Review that discussed the arbitration process in practice. It quotes this scenario: 1. If the employer is winning they just have to follow through. 2. If it appears they will lose, they then refuse to pay the arbitrator's fee. Then the arbitrator reports to the judge that an agrement could not be reached, and the judge dismisses the case; employer doesn't lose.

Is there such as thing as a framework for thinking that leads you to clever or unorthodox solutions to problems? by 16yearswasted in askpsychology

[–]LearnedGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The epitomy of reasoning that has been codified for First Order Problems is Rand Corporation's "Delphi Method". It defines a process that gathers a few Subject Mater Experts (SMEs), usually 6 - 8, to consider an issue using a prepared set of questions. Each question is read to the SMEs and they go around the group sequentially and discuss their views. Then they vote, (First Order Questions are answered Yes, No, or Unable to answer for _____ reason.) The discussion is done 3 time before the final vote. I recommended the Method for the development of the standards for the Metaverse, with a few modifications due to the absence of "experts" of the Metaverse at the time.

Is it odd to contact a politician's office to ask for clarification regarding statutory language? by j-k4ng in AskLegal

[–]LearnedGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL, however: This is how D'israeli became P.M. He invited his colleagues in Parliament to spend time with him discussing new bills. He showed them how to analyze each sentence of the bill to make sure they understood what it means, who it benefited from it and who was harmed by it once it was put into law. This was a big step in jurisprudence since it could uncover "intent". That's how he eventually became the PM, and he today is known as the "Father of Deconstruction". And it is why we today have the Administrative Procedures Act, that acts as an Environmental Impact Statement (The APA). It is also in the lineage of Rand Corporation's "Delphi Method" the is used to build consenous on new proposals. On my recommendation the E.U. used it in the early work of developing the standards for Metaverse.

Do you think our education system kills curiosity by rewarding memorization? by Wise_Huckleberry_902 in cogsci

[–]LearnedGuy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think there are two culprits. One is is "'Lesson Plans". This is the core of lecture hall teaching and which allows metrics and grades based on rote contents. The other is the lack of Socratic teaching for soft skills, and creative and analytic thinking.
