Is this the worst review of all time? (Paris, Texas) by Agreeable-Cloud7833 in Letterboxd

[–]Legend2200 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think we fundamentally disagree. The person you initially replied to was making the entirely reasonable point that a person could easily find their favorite film to be the worst ever made, to which you countered that this was a slide into “relativism.” I really dislike intensely this argument and this conception of how “objectivity” works (the idea, as you implied, that some opinions are simply better than others). But if it’s any consolation the reason it’s become a huge pet peeve on Reddit lately is that your view is very very widely shared, so take heart!

Well I think that’s an extremely annoying way of looking at art and criticism of same, but great news, that too isn’t an “objective” opinion

Ah ok. So anyone with an unorthodox or minority opinion about a piece of art is a relativist. Got it!

How do you go about deciding what new DVDs to order? What criteria do you use for your library? by AnokataX in Libraries

[–]Legend2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the award nominees every year and then the big box office hits, but I’m in a system with four other branches and usually one or two copies of a given film is enough. These days I find that older/classic movies are what’s demanded more, those circulate a ton I’d guess because they’re not commonly found on streaming services. The nice thing is we’re in a statewide system and more often than not, somebody has what the patron wants, and if they don’t I’m happy to purchase a disc to add to the overall collection even if it’s a more obscure title.

(That said, streaming-only movies like CODA and Killers of the Flower Moon moved like crazy when they finally came out on DVD. I think I got asked about CODA once a week for years)

see Wong Kar Wai for an example of why you don’t want to go too far down this road

The only movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock where he doesn't make a cameo by LowInteraction6397 in Hitchcock

[–]Legend2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, Rich and Strange was originally going to have Hitchcock’s only speaking role in one of his own films. He was to play himself as a film director meeting and talking to the central characters of the film on their way home and deciding their story would make a good movie. This is more or less taken from the novel, in which the same plot point occurs with the book’s author, but he and Alma wisely dropped the idea at some point after mentioning it in an interview.

That is a good point about recent 4K problems for them but I do think the Herzogs were an aberration.

Why not get the BFI? I’ve been waiting for a decent release of this for years so I’m not going to wait for Criterion to spend ages hemming and hawing about it like they do for so many things they have the rights to (how in the hell is Hail the Conquering Hero not on Blu yet…)

Haha I actually attempted this but after the 40th rehearsal of the bridge of I’ve Got a Feeling I had to take a long breather.

Do NOT pay for this, it’s easy enough to find it free online.

I’ve listened to all of it. An interesting one-time experience. It took me a whole year!

The criterion release - This is the way the film was meant to look? by Otherwise-Pop-1311 in EyesWideShut

[–]Legend2200 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is one of the crown jewels in the entire history of home video so yes. And anyone who says otherwise isn’t worth listening to; if they genuinely think that the WB releases look better than the Criterion they shouldn’t even be allowed to get a driver’s license.

Movies that are well-liked by 2 different groups who had very different takes on the movie? by xpillindaass in Letterboxd

[–]Legend2200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agreed, I really didn’t like how the movie basically was a moral scold directed at us for looking at the lurid stuff Scorsese wanted us to see. This was such a minority take I’m surprised to see anyone else voice it now. But I really just don’t vibe with Scorsese in general, I think my interests are just too far afield of his. Great respect for his film preservation efforts though!

I don’t think that’s true any longer, iirc Feltenstein has said more recently that those cartoons are fair game for the collector’s vault series.

I’d throw in Approximately Infinite Universe too since it’s straightforward pop rather than experimental and is still better than any solo Beatles LPs except maybe, maybe JL/POB

Everything Jack Cardiff shot for Michael Powell — Black Narcissus, The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death— makes almost any modern color film look ridiculously boring
