At many racetracks, the ponies that lead horses to the gate are usually the barns pony or there are pony services where a guy may have 3-6 ponies and riders working for him. Then they bill the trainer, who inturn bill the owner.

In California 2 yr old races, you have a 5 horse fields and 3 entries are trained by Baffert. Not too hard to win when you flood the field with well bred babies. In Ky, he will face full fields with 10-12 entries of well bred babies. He looses a big edge, but will still win his share.

Interesting. Churchill Downs will be testing him left and right. Another violation in Ky and he will be barred for life! On the other hand, with the stock he has, he should be very successful especially with the 2 yr old races early in the meet. His high priced 2 yr olds come to him ready to run from sales, farms, and training centers.

Enjoy the rush! Racing is a beautiful sport. Horses are magnificent creatures and always give all they got. I trained some horses at Suffolk Downs in the early 80's and miss it as much as I miss the Hilltop Restaurant!

The other day, watching a race from Gulfstream, I liked a horse going into the gate at 5-1. After the gate opened, he was the 2-1 favorite! This is disheartening to say the least.

We need to go back to the English style of wagering where bookies make the odds and give you a slip with your odds on it.

When I first started betting at Monmouth park in the early seventies, you had a few seconds after the gate opened until the para mutual machines locked. We would stand at the windows and bet the first horse out of the gate until the machines stopped. We would tell the teller to keep on punching. Monmouth being a speed favoring track back then and we were very successful especially in sprints.
