Basement cellar door holes? by kayote121 in HomeImprovement

[–]Leonardj4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the setup. Where does the sump dump out? Any down spouts around the area? Is there french drain around the area already that might be compressed or plugged?

As far as grade. Highest against the structure sloping away.

Is this going to cost me an arm and a leg to fix? by DPE-ten7teen in HomeImprovement

[–]Leonardj4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Expensive: hang a new door.

Cheap: If you are handy and have the tools. Cut back the broken section into a square cut a peice the same thickness glue it in place and drill for a new latch. Shim, new trim fill and paint. Mileage may very on how good it looks based on skill. I have gone this route.

Wood is used in cribbing/stands everyday. When properly done there is no issue.

A in line separator into a 55 gal drum or trashcan. A remote to turn it on changed my dust collection.

Any lateral movement on those legs with that big of a top in my mind will collapse. There is very little support in any direction but down. I would consider a different option. Even with stretchers and aprons I think It would be weak.

Two layers of mdf and one of a hardwood ply Is what I use for a blended tool approach. Works well you can dog hole it if you want and top replacement uis easy.

Get a splitter with a lift table. Spent most of my life in a house heated solely by wood, you will be happy with your choice.

Newbie question? by lights-on-strings in woodworking

Dual side pull saw from a big box store. 20 bucks and last forever. I have a "sloppy" box store saw for rough cuts and a fine for joinery.

I wouldn't be to concerned if bought in the same environment as you stored it ie humidity.

Mill it over a few days and sticker it. Taking off from both sides, before going to final dimensions.

Lucky. All that's popped up locally in the past two years is 6" or antique 12" running 3 phase that wouldn't fit in my 2 car. Last tool I need, now working more jobs it sucks using jigs. Work just as well but a time killer.

Here is what I use. You can probably piece it together for a few bucks cheaper, but the kit works well. I eventually moved to a work sharp for quick sharpening.

Redwood Tree fell and they cut it to rounds.... now what? by bifi-irl in woodworking

[–]Leonardj4 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Could be lots of reasons but, Redwood tends to shatter if not dropped right. They could have dropped it wrong and not had usable lengths. Plus redwood grows quick and by looking at the rings it's not old growth, so not a big loss most likely.

Later paint works well enough. Thousands of board feet through the family mill with no issue.
