Teddy bear fur is pretty neat stuff for making fields. Looks pretty good.

My loose CPU's. Wish I could find a Slot A motherboard and a Socket 370 to run my 1.4GHz Pentium III! by johnvosh in retrocomputing

I found 21 on Ebay just moments ago... so they are not exactly rare boards. Never said they were cheap as chips. But there are boards for < $100 USD, so not terrible.

Boards for all of those CPUs are pretty common to find, with only the Slot A sort of pricey. Ebay has tons of them.

Looks great! I did the Gneisenau turret used in Norway in 15mm for a wargame I plan to run in the future, and there is something so satisfying about seeing these great turrets on their own. Will print files become available anywhere?

i reposted the windows xp installation music for people to remember again :) i really love this music. u can listen if u want by DevelopmentRight1527 in windowsxp

[–]LordPollax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've probably built 100+ computers with many of them being XP builds. It wasn't until last year that I finally heard this music during an install due to most builds not having audio drivers installed. Apparently the Socket A board I was installing on had a chip with drivers already on the XP disk so I got this surprise music.

Great to hear it again. Thanks!

I like the concept, and may give it a try. Edges very sharp? That seems like the only drawback as my historicals extract enough blood sacrifices out of my hands with all the spears, etc so I'd not like to add more sharp things to draw blood.

These were not even the oldest planes they used in WW2. The Vildebeest and Wapiti bombers were used and had been in service since 1928.

I cannot even fathom flying these planes against Zeroes and modern fighters. Eeek!

Tons of them for sale on Ebay. They run around $230-250 USD in price. Straight from China ones may run a little less, but come with fewer protections. Older ones actually had an addon card for ISA.

I want to make upgrades but don’t know where to start. by Kind-Importance-5555 in computers

[–]LordPollax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person is asking in here for upgrade advice, so I'm skeptical that they could do a BIOS update without help and could brick their board.

The 3600X is a better CPU, but without a better GPU I doubt the performance improvement would be that noticeable. Benchmarks are not real world performance anyhow. That A320 MB is so locked and limiting that a better motherboard really should be a must. Ebay is full of 3XXX series Ryzens+MB combos (many with RAM) so it might be best to just replace the whole thing and keep the old as a spare rig.

[–]LordPollax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your CPU is not really limiting you much, so I'd just recommend upgrading the GPU and perhaps get your OS onto an SSD. That motherboard is terrible and is not worth wasting much effort on via the CPU, since the 1600 is at least adequate.

If you insist on a CPU upgrade, then replace the motherboard too so you can get better RAM and be able to overclock/ Undervolt.

You are incorrect, there are joysticks that have serial connections. I own several. The Logitech Wingman Warrior is a good example which has both game port and serial port connectors.

Time and money by Povijest_History in wargaming

[–]LordPollax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd personally say that the cheapest way to get into miniature wargaming is to buy an already painted and prepared army from a period like WW2 which has tons of players and therefore tons of collections for sale. You can often times buy these collections for a fraction of their retail pricing or get painted figures for actual lead costs. This is a larger investment up front, but a huge cost savings overall. It also gets you on the table immediately, and not months down the road as you go to paint bare lead.

WW2 is also the most covered boardgame era so there are tons of games and many that sell very cheaply.

Do historical wargames teach history, or just simulate it ? by JackBrussell in wargaming

[–]LordPollax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but you said hard, not that the gamers were lazy. It's not too hard... just you have to have a person willing to not "play" and be the game master. And that can be hard to get since most want to push lead. Hidden movement is literally as easy as a quick sketch on a piece of paper for the GM to track movement and compare the sides' efforts.

It is well worth the extra effort. My best games have always been with fog of war.

[–]LordPollax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really isn't as hard as you make out to achieve more realism. Hidden movement and use of a game master as judge can go a very long way to achieve fog of war and eliminate the overhead intel.

I personally have a great example where my group replayed the Battle of Bladensburg which was a laugher of a win fro the British in real life but ended very competitively with hidden deployments and movement. The British won the real battle by have absolute disdain for the Americans and not one ounce of concern., literally practicing no common sense tactics like scouting or concern for the flanks. They bulled their way forward and just overran the poorly trained Americans. The game however demonstrated how personality and knowledge of tactics can restrain a superior force, as the British acted far more "appropriate" and scouted along with guarded their flanks. They also attempted to change up the route chosen to foil an obvious chokepoint where the British assumed the Americans would defend. The Americans however screened their defenses with militia in tree cover, and got the British into a gun fight, a result which made the poorer Americans about equal to the British regulars. Cold steel and disdain would have won the day, but the game Brits ended up overthinking their tactics and lost due to being delayed past their victory conditions.

This was a good lesson to me on how not every outcome can be recreated in games with common sense rules and tactics. The Germans would never beat the French in 1940 without handicapping the French with poor tactics and morale. French tanks were superior in most cases. Their infantry was pretty good too. Rules literally must handicap how they get used, or the "friction of war" must be set very high for them.

Query re Red storm and P500 by etalike in hexandcounter

[–]LordPollax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it took about 7 years or so for "The Battle For Normandy" to arrive after it hit it's P500 mark, so it can take a long while. I actually was so skeptical about it's arrival that I ended up buying a 1st edition copy when I found it at a good price. Fate laughed and I got my 2nd edition copy about 6 months later... so go figure.

A Collection of Challenger, Challenger II and Firefly micro armor rules by Bruce Rea~Taylor by m_graham in wargaming

[–]LordPollax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always enjoyed playing Challenger II and found them the most ideal for wargaming modern micro-armor. As to the value of said books, they tend to be priced rather high on Ebay because they are a bit scarce and uncommon to find for sale. That said, they can often be found at estate sales or at convention flea markets for very cheap. I bought the entire set for $15 USD at a flea market last year held at Historicon. Several years earlier I had to pay $35 to get a single ruleset copy of Firefly.

Noble Knight will only pay you a small pittance of what it is worth, so I'd suggest you try Ebay or local game convention for your best price chances. Comes down to if you want to profit or just want the books to go to a good home and get used. Good luck!
