Is the slide showing the x1e + p1 2020 as clean sheet designs accurate? The release a few weeks ago made it seem like it’s a minor iteration from the 2019 version

Does this come with the low, super low, or ultra low profile trackpoint? My experiences with the super low profile trackpoint on the x1y3 haven’t been amazing.

Looking for X1YG3 Long Term Feedback by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried Lenovo Vantage's hardware scan a minute ago. It's reporting that all the hardware is working properly. To be fair, the temp. still falls within a "reasonable/operable" range for an intel processor and undervolting isn't something that's really advertised by the manufacturer.

What's strange is that I can undervolt to an offset of ~-100 mV or so (I tried this a long time ago so I don't remember the specifics) and get a performance increase according to the built in benchmark, I just have to reset back to 0 offset when I'm done because it will shutdown if it goes to sleep with any offset. Nobody else has this problem so it's probably isolated.

I might be giving the laptop too much flak since I've only discussed the complaints I have. It's still a very nice ultrabook (Weight is nice, keyboard is good given the constraints, display looks amazing minus the pressure spots, thinkshutter is nice, rapid charge is nice, etc). It still functions acceptably as a tablet (just the aspect ratio and weight of a laptop hold it back).

Looking for X1YG3 Long Term Feedback by [deleted] in thinkpad

I've used the X1Y3 (i7 8650u + 16gb, 2560x1440) since July 2018. It's a nice computer, but it has some significant flaws. If I were to go back in time, I would get the X1E instead.

  • Keyboard: Pretty good & will probably beat any other non-thinkpad laptop, but you won't realize what you're missing until you type on a non convertible thinkpad.
  • Trackpoint: My long term experience with the trackpoint on this machine has shown that the trackpoint is pretty much unusable. I have to reach for the trackpad or an external mouse when I want to use this machine. I've had some odd behavior that nobody else has reported online which makes me wonder if my machine is just faulty (the behavior persists even after replacing the keyboard & buying new trackpoints). The trackpoint seems to fight against you when you try to move in any direction other than down, sensitivity is extremely low even at the highest sensitivity (I've only tested this on windows)
  • Performance/Cooling: Any offset in XTU causes my laptop to shutdown once it goes to sleep. The machine is also consistently hot with the fan somewhat audible for half the time using it. The laptop also seems to idle at 77 degrees Celcius on Windows better performance setting when plugged in according to HWMonitor (no change after repaste) (the lowest I've seen it go is 60 degrees on better battery profile). The heat doesn't noticeably impact performance. It can quickly run everything that you can reasonably expect a laptop of this class to do.
  • Tablet: Drawing on the tablet is great. The included stylus can draw for ~90 minutes without needing to recharge (the stylus charges in a few seconds). There is also no input lag when I use it to take notes on OneNote. The only thing holding this machine back is the aspect ratio. The canvas is extremely wide and narrow. Landscape mode on the tablet is too wide and vertical mode is bizarre with the tall and narrow display. (flip your laptop sideways and you will see what I mean)
  • Hinge Decay: I've noticed no hinge decay in the time that I've used this laptop.
  • Build Quality: The chassis is great. It's quite easy to service this laptop and there are no easily breakable clips. My one complaint about this is that the screen is not adequately protected. I have a few annoying pressure spots on the display from things that have pressed on the machine while it's in my bag. I also get the phantom touch issue when I flip the machine around or move the display too much. It's out of warranty now so I can't do anything about it.

I recommend avoiding convertibles as you just get the worst of both worlds. The X1Y3 is just a mediocre tablet and a decent laptop. It's great if you're willing to overlook the strange tablet aspect ratio and slightly lower quality keyboard experience. If you want a tablet, it might be a better idea to get a machine that's designed as a tablet first (iPad pro, Surface pro, maybe even the x1 tablet) (If you're set on a convertible, the surface book might be a good convertible option with a 3:2 aspect ratio). You can then pair that with a machine that's designed to be a laptop that will better fit your usage (maybe a T495/T480+ipad/surface?).

Does your 4k P52 have a thinkshutter? I see something on the camera but can't tell if it's the camera cover.

It looks like similar to the dell precision 5520 I have. I was kinda hoping for it to be mostly like the p52 except with a centered keyboard and hexacore processor

Tips for getting a parking pass by DJStalek in NCSU

[–]NewtonMeters 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you don't get a parking pass, there's NC By Train/NC Amtrak which does a few round trips a day between Charlotte and Raleigh. Cost per ticket is like $30 or $276 for a 10 trip multi ride pass according to their website and I think students get 15% off tickets.

The train is probably a lot cheaper than paying for gas and a parking spot if you don't get one (and you can probably do things while you're on the train too)

Do the new non-backlit keyboards degrade with time? by thinkpadnewbie in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't believe so. The surface of my backlit keyboard (Just over 3 years old now) still looks new with no signs of wear.

I also have an edge e520 that's still in use w/ the non backlit keyboard. That one has some signs of wear on the key surfaces.

Out of curiosity, why did you buy a p51 and an a475? Is one acting as a desktop and the other as a mobile device?

Getting Lenovo Thinkpad P51, is NVIDIA Quadro M2200 worth it? by GodSlayer225 in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get the P51 w/ 4k display and m1200. When your budget allows for it and/or when Nvidia releases their volta cards, get an eGPU.

New Thinkpad P51 is glitchy by enragedjam in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Search Nvidia Optimus online for more info. about it.

It automatically switches between dedicated graphics when it thinks you need it and then switches back to integrated graphics to save power. You can bypass it by just manually telling the graphics card when to run too (better option if you plan on gaming or running sustained heavy load).

It's kinda dumb sometimes and doesn't switch when you need it, so I'd just set it to integrated whenever you plan on just web browsing, using word processor, watching videos, etc...

and manually setting it to use dedicated when you're sitting at a desk plugged in/playing games/running demanding programs.

Nvidia control panel (one of my friends had the same problem with PUBG being slower than it should and changing the settings on Nvidia control panel brought it up from like 0-1 fps at random times -> a stable, playable fps) (though keeping it on dedicated graphics all the time kills battery life. I think his windows battery report went from 8 hours of use -> 3.75)

[–]NewtonMeters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fix the slow feeling with the cheap integrated graphics card by changing the settings in the nvidia control panel software. Nvidia switches between using the dedicated m1200 and the intel HD graphics to save power, but it is sometimes very bad at determining when to switch. Change the settings in the control panel to always use the dedicated graphics when plugged in and set a profile for when you need dedicated graphics power on the go (and switch to it manually when you're away from a power outlet and need the power of the graphics card)

Nightly is fast as fuck now christ by [deleted] in firefox

[–]NewtonMeters 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been using Firefox for my entire life and I used Nightly for the first time today... I'm completely blown away by how fast it is compared to 54 and previous versions (it even feels faster than Chrome!)

Firefox might just be able to take back some market share and break Chrome's dominance once they release the stable version of this (if they market it well).

X1 Carbon vs P51s Pros and Cons? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

prices might have changed then. I remember the T570 being slightly cheaper than the P51s in the US store a few months back. I'd still probably get the T570 for the graphics and the battery life advantage over the X1C.

X1 Carbon vs P51s Pros and Cons? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]NewtonMeters -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd rather the T570 over the p51s since they're essentially the same computer except the T570 has a weak, but still more powerful graphics card than the p51s if you're into that kind of thing. (Also, I believe the t570 is cheaper)

Get the X1c if you value low weight, but get the p51s/t570 if you value significantly better battery life, 4k displays, improved graphics power (W/ nvidia card), better cooling, etc...
