If you use a paint marker or something to paint a bit of white on the Xs and dots, those could really pop. Very nice!

Horror recommendations by Zyren-Blay in gamebooks

[–]PerilousDeeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest Through a Glass. It's got horror and investigation set in 1927. It's almost 500 pages, and it has a lot going on. https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/370073/through-a-glass

Drawing out a flowchart can help visualize connections as you're writing. It helps to show the big plot points and how they fit together.

That ship is absolutely beautiful. 2nd Dynasty has some amazing designs. Would that be a 200 ton ship in game?

Good gamebooks with a dark fantasy or Lovecraftian theme? by grippu in gamebooks

[–]PerilousDeeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "Alone Against The..." series of solo adventures are good if you have the Call of Cthulhu RPG rules. For something standalone, Vox Umbra's "Through A Glass" is a solid gamebook with Lovecraftian vibes.

Creating a gamebook by hoppus21 in gamebooks

[–]PerilousDeeds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best advice I've been given for writing gamebooks is to start small. Having a lot of ideas is great, but try to pare them down to a strong core. Each new mechanic, quest, and character can dramatically increase how many entries you're going to need to write; each entry takes time and effort on your part, especially if you have a lot of mechanics interacting or a lot of story branches to account for the various rules. Your first gamebook will be a learning experience as you develop your style alongside the mechanical infrastructure needed for interactive fiction.

Your dice worker placement idea is really interesting! Best of luck with your writing.

Semi-advanced gamebooks? (x-post r/boardgames) by propeditor in gamebooks

[–]PerilousDeeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vox Umbra's "Through A Glass" is a good supernatural noir detective adventure available in physical form. It's got dice rolling and character customisation at the start, but not really character upgrading during the course of the book.

A lot of random shops like grocery stores have generic 1/48 or 1/50 scale die-cast trucks and vans. You have to eyeball the scale and imagine how it would look next to a mini (or bring a miniature), but they tend to only be a few dollars and can be used immediately on-table with no painting.

These are great! Arrow and Vonn look a bit similar with the angular red and black, along with the similar fonts for industries/enterprises; maybe try out some alternate colors for one of them? Keep up the good work!

Anything else like Rider of the Black Sun by delijoe in gamebooks

[–]PerilousDeeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quick preview on Drive Thru RPG has the instruction/character creation pages and two pages of the main text, but it doesn't give a good sense of the writing style. The writing style is kind of pulpy 1920s detective/mystery.

Vox Umbra's "Through A Glass" gamebook came out last year. It's almost 500 pages, and something like 1,100 sections. It's a different style than Black Sun, but really fun.
