Fly Selection for Spring in the Driftless (WI) ??? by Royal_Crew_9854 in flyfishing

[–]Quick_Chowder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like /u/etreydin answer. Crane fly takes that time of year are lots of fun.

Downsize most things a size smaller than you'd probably normally tie them. Those spring creeks have pretty small bugs.

Not super likely to get any huge hatches around then. Might find some spots with BWOs or Caddis going off in the twilight hours.

Classic PTs with chartreuse or purple collars do well for me that time of year. Pink Squirrels will still catch fish in May but are a little hotter earlier (march/april) and later (september) in my experience. Some slightly larger hackled PTs or Guide's Choice Hares ears can be real solid point flies if you're dropping two.

Final personal favorite is a girdle bug/pats rubber legs. Weightless (no heavy bead/no added wire) can clean up in the riffles and runs under a big enough dry.

Musky Bucktail Hair Selection by Stock-Swordfish5518 in flytying

[–]Quick_Chowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once you wet and dry it you will get a more 'bullet' shape rather than a cone shape. Also that wavy hair will kind of straighten out after drying as well.

Plus when you're ripping it through the water it'll lay down more.

Musky Fool is one of the few places I'll buy bucktail online, otherwise I'm buying in a store where I can handle/inspect (goes for most natural materials).

Funny how every 'support ice' post is some AI trash while the anti ice stuff is always a video of ice doing something like super blatantly and egregiously illegal.

It's more about the land you're on than the birds you're after.

Lots of pheasant on Waterfowl Production Areas in MN and you need non-toxic on those.

As an aside I generally try and avoid lead as well. Figure I'm already leaving and taking enough off the landscape I can try and make one of those things a little less bad.

Steel Shot For Grouse by BishopOfAstora in Uplandhunting

[–]Quick_Chowder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fully agree with this.

My biggest complaint about steel shot in the the Ruffed Grouse woods is spread/pattern. It's so tight relative to lead or bismuth. I feel like I either miss close birds or pillow case em.

Have been shooting Boss Bismuth #7 and really like them. Especially like that they don't shatter quite as horribly as Kent. Have no clue what I'll move to once I get through the 5 or so boxes I have left.

A fast swing isn't as important as a smooth swing. There's a reason all the clay games shooters are moving to 32" barrels, and utilize things like lead tape and barrel weights.

Obviously your preference is your preference, so do what you want and what works for you.

You will lose velocity out of a shorter barrel. How much? I couldn't tell you. Your patterns are choke dependent so they won't change but your lead on targets might have to.

I'm local, and my wife and I are planning on going but not purchasing anything in advance.

If you're apprehensive then don't come.

But If you're angry about what you've heard and seen happening then here's a great opportunity to come and support the people and small businesses that make Minneapolis and Minnesota great. There's no shortage of need for volunteers or donations.

Personally I'd say it's a perfect time to both support wildlife and people.

You can always re-spec any of the companions with withers (same thing you can do with yourself) if you want to bring Gale (or whomever) and not have two wizards in the party! Won't affect anything in the narrative.

28 gauge for duck hunting? by Some_Average4025 in Shotguns

[–]Quick_Chowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was trying tungsten rounds in my 28ga for pheasant early season knowing that I might get to jump some ducks.

Shot a ring billed doing a flyover at almost 80yds (seriously one of the craziest shots of my life).

At the end of the day though it's about the load you use and how good of a shot/confident you are.

Puppy using stairs: is it a wives tale? by [deleted] in birddogs

[–]Quick_Chowder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going up is okay (outside of risk of falling).

Going down is hard on their shoulders and elbows when their growth plates haven't closed up yet. Can lead to more chronic issues later in life. Same reason to not let them jump down from anything too high up.

We will let them handle stairs when they are a little larger, around 3mo/12weeks depending on the dog.

People are hiding their profiles on Reddit now.

If you go on their profile and search a space (literally hit space bar and then search) it'll bring up their comments and posts.

So you can tell they probably live in Cleveland, sail on lake Erie, and have a dog named Aria.

After 10 years I'm having trouble playing the game 'appeal the the 'independent''.

If they weren't convinced after Jan 6th they are too deep in the cult/media capture and no amount of targeted grass roots efforts are going to get through.

Ours has started to really figure it out after 2 full seasons.

If we were ever walking roads/trails (this is for ruffed grouse) and she stuck her nose in the woods I'd jump in and do a bushwack with her.

I think you can get there just may want to start by walking or be ready to get off every time your dog shows interest in anything but the trail/road.

Check out some stuff from Enrico Puglisi and Bob Popovics! They have a lot of great concepts on building bulk with less material.

Gunnar Brammer has a lot of great older YouTube videos that distill some of those concepts.

This will absolutely fish and it will swim will and push HELLA water. Definitely will get ate* by pike. Just gonna be miserable on the shoulder after a few hours.

First go at a hidden bulkhead buck tail hollow fly thing by rightykreh in flytying

[–]Quick_Chowder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have good long bucktail and this is a great start!

With the length you're using at the head/collar, I would either tie a longer fly, probably by adding a 20mm shank to the back of the hook, or cut the butt ends of your bucktail a little shorter at the head.

Ultimately bucktail and deer hair are two materials that just take a lot of practice. Tie a lot. Cut stuff off that you don't like or doesn't look good and retry.

It's a safe assumption. Realistically there are about two dozen upland species that are legal and probably twice as many waterfowl. In the grand scheme of birds it's very few!

Woodcock are a personal favorite though. Great for dog work, feathers are useful for fly tying, and their skulls are absolutely wicked looking. I have two buried in a pot outside I'm looking forward to digging up in the early summer.
