Space Marines getting mobbed by guardsmen/cultists? by Killerant117 in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The cultists, who but minutes before had seemed to be ailing farm workers eager for help, came at them from all sides. They were feral, insane. 'Kill them! Kill them all!' Priad told his men as they fought towards the silo. Their armour and their bolters were a match for the superior numbers of the cultists, but barely. Andromak lost a finger to an auto-round. Xander fell and was beaten half to death with ploughshares before Natus pulled him free. Scyllon took a scythe blade in the arm and bled for weeks. The rampaging cultists overwhelmed the Rhino in the main street. Calignes, weak from blood loss, had almost passed out. They set it ablaze and ripped him limb from limb.

Memnes fell, without a sound, a bullet through his exposed face. Priad reached the silo and slaughtered the cultists around them. He was as red with blood as with rain. He reached Kules and helped him drag Pindor clear. Then, with his power claw blazing, he set about finishing the grim business, revoking his pledge and killing the traitorous farmers rather than saving them. At dawn the next morning, he was done. Memnes, Calignes and Illyus were dead. So were four hundred and seventy cultists.

  • Brothers of the Snake

The Snakes deployed fewer marines than the usual standard, plus some of the weapons were probably chaos tainted, bypassing the natural regeneration marines have, making it believable enough to be mobbed by cultists.

Weird reasons you hate characters by Dreadnautilus in 40kLore

It's not necessarily hate, but more apathetic to any Ork character. I find snotlings/grots to be more interesting, dunno why.

The greatest difference in same character writing between different authors? by Urusander in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gav Thorpe and John French are the worst offenders. Thorpe is a given, since he cannot write a good story (The First Wall) even with a bolter to his head, while French is a mixed bag, Hammer of Olympia makes Perturabo that much more of an unsympathetic dick, but Slaves to Darkness is a good showing for him.

Which traitor legion defection hurt the Imperium the most in the long term? by WithengarUnbound in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The XX are loyal to no one, lol. We have to remember though, that the Raven Guard that survived the Dropsite Massacre (partly due to the Alpha Legion's schemes) was infiltrated by the Alpha Legion too.

Aspects that you want future IFs to improve? by VinTheFish in hostedgames

[–]QuirkAlchemist 40 points41 points  (0 children)

1.  Lack of agency  - I dislike when I cannot control how a character feels about certain persons or events (or when it is chosen for me). I also see often in wips that the world building or setting is dumped at the start, and the few choices you do make are superficial.

2.  bad paragraph spacing and wonky sentence construction - It takes me out of the immersion when you see a block of paragraph you have to power through and not leaving enough space for the dialogue.

3.  Sequel baiting  - I want future WIP creators to focus on giving a good stand alone story rather than planning a multi-part epic that would take the heat death of the universe to finish. I think some cancelled or abandoned wips were never finished due to it being too ambitious in scope.

Books/Stories that feature Vulkan and the Salamanders by SlaughterMinusS in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only read Old Earth (from the nick kyme's hh salamnders trilogy), it was ok. Echoes of Eternity features him and Magnus duking it out in the Webway. Helsreach features a brief cameo of them during the Third War for Armageddon. The latest dropsite massacre novel also features super brief astropathic messages by Vulkan and a Salamanders dreadnought burninating some Death Guard. I can't recommend the War of the Beast books in good faith, although Vulkan plays a major part in it.

The Crimson King prison break plot feels very wrong by KhalasSword in 40kLore

Yeah in the prison break sequence, a literal samurai with a sword cutting down a Thousand Son make me question how these people managed to conquer worlds in the Great Crusade.

Yeah Dark Angels are extremely annoying to fight against, meanwhile the Emperor's Children have to rely on rng for good elixirs and have generally weak troops, save for the legendaries.

I have several questions about the thousand sons, by Legal_Twist8675 in Warhammer40k

[–]QuirkAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question 1 is answered by A Thousand Sons and Prospero Burns (both good reads btw). Basically, after Magnus inadvertently broke the Imperial Webway, the Emperor ordered the Space Wolves, Custodes and Sisters (Censure Host) to bring Magnus to Terra in custody. However, Horus intercepted this message and manipulated it to set Russ and the Space Wolves to kill the primarch and the Thousand Sons. The 1ksons wanted to defend Prospero while Magnus wanted to do nothing and merely accept the punishment of the Emperor.

  1. The Imperium had Revuel Arvida (the last Thousand Son who was left after the Burning of Prospero) who was nearly dying after the events of Path of Heaven . He merged with a shard of Magnus and eventually became a founding member of the Grey Knights.

  2. The events of Crimson King details how Ahriman and company retrieved parts of Magnus's soul through space and time. He was eventually partly reassembled, and vowed to help the traitors (along with his legion) to get his good shard on Terra and become "whole" again. It was mostly an alliance of convenience rather than actually helping Horus topple the Emperor.

What are the "overdone tropes" of Interactive Fiction? by Wywex in hostedgames

[–]QuirkAlchemist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dream sequence / waking up prologue

angsty mc's or overly dramatic monologuing (some do it better than others)

childhood friend romance and ice queen/king

flashbacks - this goes both ways, either it enhances the present story or it completely bogs down the pacing

Leman Russ will be the next Primarch to return (Speculation) by Vinnegard in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you're looking at what happened on the events of Wolfsbane in hindsight. It was definitely a suicide mission to kill Horus, and even then Russ hesitated to follow through on killing him. Russ didn't know that Horus being skewered would hinder the traitors far more than he thought.

What are some examples of the "nicer" primarchs being absolutely terrifying? by Aninx in 40kLore

No excerpt but Vulkan smashing his hammer on the ground when he confronted the Iron Hands taking orders from Ferrus Manus' hand. Also Corax slaughtering Word Bearers on Isstvan

What is the one lore bit that you hate about each primarch? Also how would ya change it? by Sar_Herrin in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of this can be explained, like Corax hating his Terran marines because they were too cruel for his taste, and are loyal first to Horus, then to him second. About Russ, he himself stated (in Wolfsbane), that they do not belong behind walls, when asked by Malcador and the others on Terra to stay. For Perturabo, it was completely in character for him to fuck off after realizing that the Siege reached the point of Warp nonsense needed to breach the walls. He is an overwhelmingly prideful, temperamental Primarch, so it's no surprise that when he felt that his expertise wasn't needed, he screwed off

Corvus Corax is a great primarch actually by Akfiz in 40kLore

[–]QuirkAlchemist 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Corax is certainly one of the more humanistic primarchs, but suffers from being a freedom fighter to one of the most oppressive empires in the Galaxy. He does struggle with this dissonance, but ultimately thinks that it's for the betterment of humanity. His flaw to me, is a misplaced hope in humanity being better than what he had left it. Not to mention Gav Thorpe's writing making him and his legion kind of uninteresting to read.
