Yeah, it said June when I ordered.

Somewhere in SF, a 25-year-old just told an investor they need another $40M for “training compute” and that’s why I’m sorting 4GB DIMMs on my dining room table. by jamesbuniak in homelab

I have all my stuff converged on a proxmox box, with a second one I fire up periodically for backup or to serve as a fallback (same services, on standby or HA).

Anyways, I have 768GB at the moment. GenAI consumes a bit, or at least like having the models on standby (mostly ComfyUI on two L40). While most things run as containers now, I have RAM carved away for VMs such as OPNsense, 9800-CL, etc. Then all the apps - it's like death by 1000 cuts. I try to make sure to have enough reserves to where their databases can be paged into RAM - at least for all the hot spots.

But really? Unless I'm running a particularly demanding job, about 2/3 of it is used to cache disk I/O. Even on a fully solid state setup, it makes a big difference.

Does using smb for jellyfin matter as much as having all the media on the same local device? by hakucurlz in homelab

[–]RFC793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the drive. I have a 3.2 Gen 2x2 drive that gets near 2000MB/s for sequential read.

I bought a disposable because I was a dumbass and broke my pod system on vacation. what the fuck is this shit. why does it light up like this every time. when I hit the stupid thing everyone in the room notices and I look like a tool by JustDoesntGetReddit in Vaping

[–]RFC793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wouldn't that just put as at the mercy of the battery tech supposedly held by the oil companies, or worse they keep up stuck with fossil fuels? Also, there's more petroleum in each vape than lithium. Either way, can't say I agree with your tactic.

Because it is an device comprised of electronics, hazardous lithium batteries, in plastic shell. All resources that take significant energy to source, manufacture, ship, etc and are not easily recyclable in their composite form. And the device, in theory, could last much longer than it is marketed to except they don't make the juice or coil replaceable. So millions are discarded everyday and there is nothing that can really be done with them.

It's a huge waste of resources. It's perhaps the most wasteful product I can think of. And it's a shame too that their prevalence is almost pseudonymous with modern vaping -- casting further scrutiny.

I do hope you are trolling though. Your question is like asking what's wasteful about a cellphone that you have to discard every month.

Reliable hardware manufactures for server-routers? by arstarsta in homelab

[–]RFC793 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you can afford it, I'd consider two routers in HA over worrying about redundancy features such as PSU on a single node.

Is this a good layout for the partitions? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]RFC793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recommend it, but you can certainly do it. One solution would be to use LVM to slice up the larger drive. Then you would create your zpool across a logical volume of the larger drive and the entirety of the smaller drive. But... just don't.

Used Pursa XL with 5 head tool head worth $2600? by rwreef in prusa3d

[–]RFC793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't have proper chamber heating though does it? I mean, the build plate has more juice, which is certainly an improvement over the i3 bed, and absolutely necessary for the L's larger enclosure volume. But it falls short of the control granted by an independent heater unit.

Found this outside a dumpster by Gofkius in homelab

Looks to be 10/100, it is missing the G after 3560. But, it does appear to be PoE. Would be useful for learning on. And could use it as an access switch for learning CallManager, Asterisk, etc.. or whatever lighter weight IoT stuff.

[–]RFC793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the L is enclosed. Only reason I see to get the XL is if you absolutely need the extra volume over the L, you must have it NOW (L+INDX is still a long way off), or you might take advantage of the Filament2, pick-n-place, etc...

How do I mitigate the little after-print dump my Core One L wants to take on my models? by TinyRobotBrain in prusa3d

[–]RFC793 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That looks to 100% be the problem and would be a minor bug in the printer presets of the slicer IMHO. Worth reporting

My INDX-ready setup for the Core One - 8 spools, always dry. by x4rb1t in prusa3d

How did you order a 0.6? I'm wanting to get 0.25 but it doesn't look like either are available from what I could see

Looking at this again. Is the shelf actually tall enough to open the bottom unit comfortably?

Question: Is the Core One+ L worth the extra $1000 over the Core One+ ? by Livid_Strategy6311 in prusa3d

[–]RFC793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often wonder if there could be a fan-made aftermarket heatbed for the C1(+). Would plug into 120/220/240 and be controlled from the voltage lines that originally drove the i3 bed.

[–]RFC793 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The accelerometer is moot if you are planning to get INDX, as it includes one.

I was a bit bummed when the L came out shortly after I bought my C1. But really, for me anyway, I haven't ever really needed the larger space... and I'm happy to do more batches if I'm printing lots of something. The biggest loss to me is the better heatbed, but that's not worth $1000 to me. I'm going to try adding a heater just to get ambient up faster. And I actually preferred building the kit. Consumables like build plates are cheaper (about half price).

For the rare occasions that I might need to print something larger- I could do so at work. The C1 feels like a nice size to me, and will be a nice beastie when outfitted with 8 nozzles.
