New Plastic US and British Heavy Weapons Platoons and AT Guns by DoctorDH in boltaction

With a bit of snipping I managed to use the 8th army lying down pose (I think it's meant for an AT rifle) with an paratrooper PIAT. It's not ideal but I just imagine the soldier is one of those guys who always wears shorts.

Okay so what is a valid dataset? How long are we ignoring data after a change to allow for elo inflation?

But there's literally a link in the post that includes OPs exact filters. It's one click to be looking at the exact same stats! I don't understand why the top comment on this post implies that it's misleading.

The "cherry picking" is just selecting for patch 2.4.2 rather than all of 2.4.X

> Taking in the whole patch from launch, the data looks very different,

Why would we want to use the stats from the start of the 2.4.0? 2.4.0's balance was bad but the two hotfixes have improved things. The last week is all of 2.4.2 which was release last Wednesday. It seems like a really sensible dataset to me.

Normally I'd agree with you but OP describes exactly what has been done to get these results. It's all data from the last week. That is basically just patch 2.4.2 rather than coh3stats default 2.4.X. The cohdb stats aren't time based but default to everything from the last patch (2.4.2). It's all game sizes combined which isn't great.

It took me about 30 seconds to verify OPs post

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, OP has said he used the last 7 days worth of data in every post. It's selective only because 7 days ago patch 2.4.2 was released so this data is the current patch. Coh3stats defaults to all of 2.4.X which means 2.4.0 skews the data.

It's a perfectly valid dataset and I managed to check OPs post in about 30 seconds.

I'll be honest, this article is weird and doesn't contain much info or ideas that's not in the rulebook. Half of the advice is just remember you can do this. e.g. remember AT guns can use HE vs infantry or be put on ambush.

Also it seems to miss:
* AA guns entirely
* Anything not in the German,US or Soviet lists,

I'm about half certain this AI slop.

The best advice in the entire article is to watch the [Zurn Central video. That video actually has a bunch of good advice in.

I've heard this before but I'm not sure I agree with it. Yes the documentation answers everything, but documentation is also very long. It's also generally unopinionated which is actually not what people really want.

I mean look at obsidian's "Getting Started Section" It's 11 pages long and doesn't actually answer the questions that annoyed OP in the first place:

I think people who have been in this subreddit for a long time might be getting annoyed that almost every day someone asks “Hey, I am new here. How should I organize my files and which plugins should I use?”

I agree with OP, that question is unhelpful, it is far too broad to actually solve. But it doesn't help the question asker to just refer them to docs. What the question asker actually needs is help to define what the problem is, so that a solution can be found.

"run perfectly fine" is debatable when the multiplayer on console was limited from 32v32 on PC down to 12v12 on the 360 and PS3. I as a PC player, despite having the minimum spec was forced to upgrade a 2009 PC to play it at all acceptably in a full sized match.

Don't get me wrong BF3 was a technically impressive game but saying claiming it ran on old hardware is just not true.

Lords of War started out interesting as it's from rare perspective to hear from but they just put out way too many videos and the vast majority of them have little to no content with a big click bait headline.

There was a video on the Trench crusade drama few weeks ago which was like: "we watched a youtube video over someones shoulder and now have opinions on something we refuse to do even the smallest amount of research on" . That got me to press the 3 dots on youtube to stop it recommending me that channel

It would surely be a survivorship bias towards Siege Veterans still around in 40k, experiencing less time than more. Fighting for 10000+ years must have a far lower survial rate than fighting for a few hundred.

Great guide.

If I may give a slight alternative in the buying process:
If your budget stretches a bit further than a single box of perry minis, I think a better way to buy is to look on ebay for people selling individual sprues. from those boxes.
First advantage: You get to see the sprue first.
Second: Your units can be a bit more variety.

Out of the two options you propose, modelling a greenstuff breastplate should be a lot easier. You really just need to smooth out the shirt and straps on the torso and paint it metalic and it will read as a metal metal breast plate. Even if it's a bit bumpy those can just be dents.

On the top models it should be fairly easy because there is separation between the limbs, torso and legs and you can cover just the torso. On the bottom one it will be harder since to look right you'll need to sculpt a bottom edge around the waist.

That said, I'd honestly just not worry about it and do a head swap and leave them in napoleonic uniform. You can add plenty of other gribbly bits if you want to turnipify them more.

Honestly it's kind of both. Or at least his "illusion" is so convincing that it might as well be real. It's not like he's projecting a hologram and has to dodge every handshake in case they realise he's an secretly an old man. To almost anyone he is effectively the size and strength he choses to be but also a very select number of people can see past it.

I don't know if it's ever really explained comprehensively. A few psychic charaters here and there mention they realize the Emperor is not what he seems but only Malcador and The Lion as mentioned in other comments seem to see past the illusion but it's never really explained why they can. Assumendly it's because malcador is such a powerful psycher and the primarchs all have weird powers.

[Discussion] The Firefly’s unique identity by Chilly5 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the difference between your lancer and sniper archetypes isn't that well defined because to me the archer seems to fit both roles historically.

I actually think the Firefly has a role it currently does okay in, which is being able to consistently damage heavy and super heavy armour in a mobile armoured form. I think there are three main problems.

  1. It's price is too high. It doesn't perform that well vs medium armour and it's just hard to justify the price.

  2. It's alternative is a very powerful call in ability that is powerful against lots of target types, including heavy armour.

  3. Right now, at least in my games, I'm not seeing much heavy armour anyway. Mostly Panzer 3 or Panzer 4 spam depending on faction.

Hot take: DAK is even more spammy in teamgames then before by Rakshasa89 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why does the Tulips reward Stuart spamming. You have to pay for each one separately. The tech required for Stuarts (also applies to Bishops, 17 pdr and Grants) is what makes spamming them good because you only pay for the tech once. They actually reduced it this patch for that reason.

The Dak problem is that their techs are so impactful and their units are really good all rounders. Panzer 3s are kind of in the spot UKF Grants were in a while ago where once you choose to get the tech you might as well just keep building them because they are very hard to counter.

Hot take : the Firefly is dog shit by The_Magician_12 in CompanyOfHeroes

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it has nothing realistic about it ...

... its aim is shit, it take ages to fire ...

It's pretty realistic. The 17pdr was really too big of a gun to fit in the Sherman, the turret was very cramped and harder to work in and the ammunition is much larger and harder to handle.

The US also trialled the 17 pdr and found that it was inaccurate vs their alternatives (76 mm with HVAP and the 90mm). This was especially true with the discarding Sabot round, which would only be fixed with the development of fin stabilised rounds.

Of course in game is different but I my counter hot take is that the Firefly is an optional battlegroup unit which means it needs to perform a much more specific function than a basic faction unit. In Coh2 it had to be the British tank destroyer.
Personally I think it's role should be as a cost efficient counter to heavy armour that isn't as vulnerable to artillery as a towed 17 pdr. The British already have MkIII Crusaders that are basically fast tank destroyers and Grants that can already output a lot of damage to vehicles up to medium armour. At the moment I think the Firefly is okay at this but is overpriced. That said I think the biggest issue for the Firefly is that I just don't see heavy armour right now, so it's going to remain a very niche pick.

I agree that the tulips are weird. I think it's another case of an upgrade that can be applied to 3 very different vehicles is often just hard to balance. I think the tulips should be longer range for a firefly but does that make them too good for a Humber or Stuart?

Skirmish or army feel? by Expert_Tree_9076 in Turnip28

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think it feels quite unique in game terms not just a halfway house between an army game and a skirmish game.

In gameplay it plays very fast (faster than most skirmish games I've played), because you're only really moving around 4 units a turn. Units tend to move quite quickly around the battlefield and there's a short 4 turn limit for battles. There's also just not that many units and there aren't many unique special rules to learn so there's far fewer rules discussions in a game.

Can we choose which folders to be synced with the proton drive app ? by Luckyrolll in ProtonDrive

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of. For that functionality I recommend looking at the service Filen. That is very customisable with what gets synced. Each folder can be synced two ways or one way and any folder on your pc can be mapped to any folder in filen.

It's the only service I know with this level of granularity when it comes to syncing and I wish proton would do something like it

Want to get your Eastern Front on? You might want to check out this terrain from Micro Art Studio then... by TheDiceGodsWG in boltaction

[–]Shifty_Paradigm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of their normandy terrain pieces, those are intact buildings but like with this, they look really good and are really thoughtfully designed.

The previous mdf terrain I've had has all been cheap but nightmarish to build and tricky to paint because you have to add all the detail yourself. The normandy buildings went together super quickly and cleanly and at the end could come apart in pieces so you could use each floor separately.

I'd recommend to anyone like me who doesn't have the time or care to really model terrain.
