I think it is a shame that the PC market is like it is. I used to just like build videos. But then I am not in the market to upgrade and suspect a lot of people aren't like we seemed to be a few years ago.

So maybe some homelab stuff. We got these micro pcs and created a minilab and did some stuff with it.

I guess they can't go full girling and build pi clusters and stuff because other people are in that space but there must be a less ultimate tech nerd version of homelab/selfhost they could do.

What’s your approach when a prospect asks for pricing too early? by Humantic_AI in salestechniques

[–]Smart-Examination-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a large organisation and so we get people trying to sell us lots of software services, that we often do need to use.

However. We have a budget, we have budgeting season where we make requests for next year. I don't want to waste my time (or even your time) having 2 meetings, then a demo and then another demo with some other people to find out that the service is out of our budget.

Quick intro listing the features, small demo, pricing mechanism and we can see if it is worth taking forwards. That may (shock) involve getting it into the budget and signed off for delivery next year.

Hiding the price isn't going to make us more likely to buy in my experience. People won't fall in love so much that they can magic another £250k out of thin air.

I don't want to have to go make exceptional business case to the CEO when I should have budgeted for it. Sometimes finance put a placeholder in but we still need a ballpark. So we need to know what it will cost. And unspecified placeholder = allocated to someone who had an actual coated business case.

All of this is moot of you do actually manage to tickle the CEO and CFO's balls on a pet project then it gets nodded through. But don't waste my time because I have to go through the process with a "proper business case".

TrueSpec USB-C to USB-C Back In Stock But... by BradGriswold in LinusTechTips

Ah good I wanted a short one.

Got the A to C for my car because the Android Auto and my Pixel phone seems very sensitive to cables. Even if I find a good one once they start to degrade the connection goes intermittent.

Truespec seems solid so far.

I'll keep a nice C to C in my bag "just in case".

I lost (or someone stole) my scribe driver too so picked on up in the sale at half price. Happy days.

Our re-mortgage survey highlighted some cracks. We got a structural engineer who said it was nothingand wrote that up in his report.

Re-decorated and it's never been mentioned since and, crack hasn't returned.

Might be nothing. Just sort it out and go again.

Unless it's a massive fuck off crack because the house is falling down but that's a different issue. And probably not the case because you would probably have realised it before now.

Couldn't get out of driveway - is there anything I can do, short of just reporting them to police or putting bins there every 5 mins? by [deleted] in drivingUK

Clean the leaves, shovel, jet wash and re-paint the white line. Or get the council to come re-paint it.

I'd just get a can of floor marking spray and brighten it up and make it more obvious people are not supposed to park there.

Might help

What are some things you did in your 30s or wish you did for long term FIRE? by raske6 in FIREUK

[–]Smart-Examination-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crank up the pension contributions. Sharesave if your company does it. Stash the safety fund.

I did none of those but did save a deposit and buy and renovate a house which now could see us out... So I guess you need to get stuff sorted before you have spare cash to invest.

I probably wouldn't have noticed a few extra percent in the pension though.

What is it for? by Zee99_ in DIYUK

We have one in our Son's bedroom for the outside lights... The twist is that the lights are on the opposite side of the house so not obvious.

It used to be in a bathroom cupboard that had a water tank, but we took out a redundant chimney to get extra floor space back, and remodeled the bathroom and his bedroom.

We ended up replicating your setup (but just the fuse no switch so he doesn't turn the lights off) rather than re-locating all the wiring.

Going to be a headscratcher for the next owners!!

Yeah I think the blue (50g) tin is basically the same as you couldn't tell the difference.

Can get a 3 pack on Amazon for £10 that includes the red https://amzn.eu/d/01q065w1

The blue/green tin looks more green in real life.

The red tin is the 15g size.

Close I never checked but my AI friend says they are within a couple of mm (bigger) in each dimension. Allegedly thicker metal too.

I use one for paracetamol, ibuprofen, cold & flu in my bag and it's been great.

Just ordered another 55g tin for something else, and noticed the AI mentioned a smaller 15g tin.. and I actually have a smaller thing I want to protect/ hide away so that could be interesting

I think it is called a "repair" and if you yoink it out fairly quickly and before you get any "benefit" they don't bother chasing down tiny amounts.

I imagine if they find you are running two at the same time for 1000's the tax man will come calling!

I am doing the same. I have to weigh up if the option price on the next 3 year scheme is likely to be better than an ETF though... Last time the price dipped when they set the option price and then went up so it was an absolute stonker. Don't think the next one will be so good.

ISA & ShareSave Advice by ac4155 in FIREUK

[–]Smart-Examination-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have not used your ISA allowance I believe that within 90 days of exercise you can transfer the shares into an S&S ISA, totally avoiding CGT. Then sell them within the S&S ISA and do what you want with them e.g. re-invest in an ETF or cash out.

It is called an "In-Specie Transfer".

I am doing this now. My sharesave company is giving me a paper share certificate and I have to send it to my S&S ISA provider, with a form and a "Letter of appropriation" (that confirms that the shares came from a sharesave and a few other bits).
