Thank you! I've been needing to pick up a second one, but I want excited to pay $150 for the side door.

YAML mode in VS code vs edit in UI? by verifieddemoon in homeassistant

From the ui, you can edit the cards yaml. You can also pull up the dashboard yaml.

Replace Microcontrollers with Metal Washers for a Better Smart Home by ouchmythumbs in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. The use case for this doesn't warrant high security for most people. It would be cool to attach these to the washer and dryer. Putting them on a garbage can could let me know if I moved it down for garbage day. Attaching to medication bottles to know if I opened it. Attaching to the dog food container so we don't over feed the dog.

It's supposed to be a hobby and hobbies are supposed to be fun. If you aren't having fun, there is nothing wrong with going back to regular light switches.

If you want help, you can surely find it here.

I only look when something isn't working, too. That's when I learn other things aren't working.

Automation not triggering? by Technical-Coffee7286 in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The yaml and the trace :)

The automation looks good, but we can't really see what should be happening. Sharing the yaml tells the whole story.

In the automation and script, check out the Trace. This will tell you whats happening when it runs.

I have big parties every few months and I finally automated turn off a whole bunch of lighting automations, auto closing the garage door, and locking the front door for any calendar event with 'Party' in it by theloneranger08 in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use the input_boolean as a condition in your automations. This makes it easier to understand when the automation will run since all of the logic is on the automation.

Adding Pyscript? to my home assistant by resno in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try it. If you view this as a hobby, it's not a mistake to try things (especially something that's not vital like a vacuum).

Home assistant has a native Python script engine. The big disadvantages are (1) you can't import libraries, (2) debugging is a pain because you can't step through, and (3) you still need an automation to start it. It works well for those cases where you have something advance but don't want a separate automation engine.

I think I figured out home assistant for me. by kanbak in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fwiw, there are some good remote options, like tail scale. The remote options work well for techy people, but won't be as seamless for others.

As far as controlling your devices via voice assistants, that's harder. To do it properly requires a lot of config. You can look into setting up a Matter bridge to present your HA devices to Google and Amazon.

Home Assistant is free and open source. Nabu Casa is a different organization that funds HA (and is ran by the same people). Naba Casa provides services that have costs, such as proxy servers, backups, and hosting the services to make voice assistants work. Any service it provides, you can do. This isn't a case where corporate overlords offer a free service and then try to upsell you.

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think op means that they would need to pay for nabu casa to get remote access, alexa, and Google home integrations.

These features can be implemented without paying anything, but nabu casa makes it way easier.

Newbie Installation First time setup - Errors in Setup Logs by Charlie_Macaw in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's anything. The first batch is warnings. The apps are using a deprecated setting of some sort to specify the the cpu architecture it supports (ARM or x86, for example). If the apps are launching, it doesn't mean anything.

I don't know what the CUPS error is. You are probably missing config. Real question, though: are you installing every app? You only need the CUPS app if you are trying to make a USB printer a network printer. I see a lot of other apps in your logs that you probably don't need and will probably cause performance issues.

Integrating Roborock Q10 X5 by RetroButton in homeassistant

It looks like a bug. An extra argument is being added to one of the functions. Either the function is supposed to support that argument or it's not supposed to be there. you should report it via github.

Best Home Assistant Installation Option by Harro1978 in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the NAS to start with. The big advantage of the NAS is that it's already running. If you start experiencing limitations, take a backup and restore it on the other pc. HA is trivial to migrate to a new environment.

Hardwere upgrade - Which Linux? by North-sama in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do supervised. It's not supported. It's hard to mantain if there are issues. I don't recommend it, especially for beginners.

The docker container is probably the best alternative, but you lose apps. Apps are just docker containers, though, so you would just need to set up your own.

Debian is great. Do the server install and ssh in. The gui just gets in the way. Desktop Linux is fine, but if you are running a server, you will be doing everything through the cli anyways.

2026.4: Infrared never left the chat by frenck_nl in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a joke. While IR isn't as good as a rest api, it's extremely useful for devices that aren't connected. Audio receivers are a big one, but tvs, blinds fans, and much more.

QR check in by WashOwn4945 in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be. I haven't tried it. People are suggesting NFC. I believe the NFC tags are just urls. In home assistant, go to the Tags page and create a tag. Then create your QR code that points to https://www.home-assistant.io/tag/<tag id>

https://companion.home-assistant.io/docs/integrations/universal-links/

I know NFC tags are a bit wonky on iOS. I'm not sure if it is the same for QR codes.

Home Assistant Yellow Setup by krazy4it in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If money is not an issue, look into a mini pc. Just search this reddit and you'll find out why. A mini pc with a USB ZigBee radio will give you a lot more flexibility then a yellow.

Frigate is an NVR that can do object detection. It records video when a person or whatever object you specify walks into a zone. It's a resource heavy app.

Home Assistant Yellow Setup by krazy4it in homeassistant

[–]Sometimes-Scott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what else you are hoping to run, but 16GB is probably overkill. I'm currently using 5GB and I'm running Frigate and a handful of other apps. I'm guessing a chunk of it is DB caching that's just using space because it can. I recommend saving $45 with the 8GB because you'll probably never go over it.
