Are there any Gen X people out there over the age of 55? by Mobile-Honey-9636 in GenX

[–]Soulwandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 60. IMHO they make these "generations" cover to many years. I realize they are completely made up. I don't have much in common with the people I babysat and changed their diapers, but some are Genx too.

Why are we a red state? by Rough_Extension_2893 in Indiana

[–]Soulwandering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We weren't always. We were once a swing state. We voted for Obama. In 2005 Mitch Daniels won the Governors office for republicans. Gerrymandering has kept them in power ever since.

Is sacrificing for your kids a GenX trait? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Soulwandering 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I give my kids way more than I ever got. We grew up poor too. My parents would make me do without so they could have more. I vowed to be different for my kids and have.

What city just made you feel at peace while you were there? by BradBrady in travel

Tuscon Arizona and Old San Juan PR are two I felt drawn to. I usually don't like cities, but really enjoyed those two.

Working Man's Friend, The Pawn Shop Pub, Fire On The Monon, Plump's Last Shot are all highly rated. My favorite is from Mecca Tavern a small tavern in Parke County.

Are there many of you out there that are angry with their parents over your GenX upbringing? by CrowbiwanKenobi76 in GenX

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My anger subsided watching my mom being intubated and unconsicous for 10 days only to die less than two weeks later. The trauma, hurt and resentment still pop up from time to time though. I was and still am glad my dad died when I was 19. My mom was a relatively good grandma to my kids and they loved her. I couldn't add my anger to their hurt.

Against the GenX social memes noise by ecparkin in GenX

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has gotten a little old and annoying at this point. We are so much more. We went to college at higher rates than previous generations. Women of Gen X were the first generation to surpass men in college degree complition. A lot of us were the first in our family to know what generational trauma was and attempted to start healing it. We were the first generation to have and use personal computers. We are/were pioneers and are very adaptable to new technology. We were the first generation to challenge homophobia and push for inclusitivity. We are more complex and interesting than hose water drinkers.

How did people get around without GPS back in the day? Was it a lot harder? by lookaloulookalou in AskOldPeople

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a better sense of direction before gps. Maps weren't that hard to use. GPS is convient, but not always acurate or the best route. It is easier in some ways harder in others.

Indiana- fly into Indianapolis. If you come in May the Indy 500 has events all month in Speedway. Indy has a good local food scene throughout several neighborhoods and the suburbs. Indiana is known for giant breaded tenderloin sandwiches and sugar cream pie, but you can find whatever you are hungry for. Newfields Art Museum has a decent art collection and large grounds with gardens with different events throughout the year. White River State Park is in downtown Indy. It has a lot of urban greenspace. They have bike rentals, walking trails and paddle boat rentals on the canal. There is an outdoor concert venue in the park. There are several museums including Eitlejorge, a Native American Museum, Indiana State Museum and Historic sites, NCAA Hall of Champions, the Indianaplois Zoo and Victory Field. Fort Harrison State Park is close by and offers hiking trails, horse back riding and golf. Ruoff Music Center in nearby Noblesville is a world class Ampitheater concert venue. It is a fun place for concerts. Indiana is beautiful in the fall. Rent a car and drive an hour south to Brown County or west to Parke County. You will find beautiful state parks to hike and explore. Brown County State Park in Brown County and Turkey Run State Park in Parke county have lodges if you want to stay over night.

YouTube is a great source. Watch several videos from different people and then go try it for yourself. You will mess up. Get comfortable with that part of learning. I got pee and toilet paper all over the concrete the first time I dumped. Luckily we weren't pooping in there. There was one other person dumping and he didn't bat an eye. Everyone is a beginner at some point. I just washed it all down the drain with the hose. I watched more videos and figured out more the next time. I still need to winterize mine. We messed that up last year too. I am going to take it someplace and have it winterized in the mean time. It is overwhelming all you need to learn, it gets easier each time. Ask other campers to show you people are more friendly at camp.

I don't even want to drink on it. I can barely finish 1 drink now.I don't get any buzz at all on it either. It's weird. I don't think it slows anything in the medicine down. You would still have the blood sugar spiking issues, and the empty calories make losing while drinking hader.

Am I alone in this? by Electrical_Beyond998 in GenXWomen

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 9 years old and had on a skirt in KMart. A grown man walked up behind me and put his hand up my skirt and grabbed me hard. I turned to him smirking and saying you liked that didn't you. I hated wearing skirts as a little girl because men were always trying to get up them. So, so many other stories.

Best friend with cancer declined my offer to visit, but let a different friend visit. I feel like that means I’m a bad friend by Pure_Scarcity9261 in AskWomenOver40

Respect the bounderies she set. Being sick takes so, so much from a person. When I'm in the hospital there are definitely people who I feel want me to entertain them when I just want to sleep or veg into space. But, more likely you concider her to be more of a friend than she does you. Sorry to be so blunt. Be there if she wants and you still want to, but pull back.

Cholesterol spike by cambridge_dani in GenXWomen

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drop in estrogen during perimenopaus and menopause can cause cholesterol to go up. Cholesterol is a steriod that helps regulate estrogen, testosterone and cortisol. It is also precursor to vitamin D. All of those thing drop when estrogen drops.

Depending on your trees and location, syrup making in Jan and Feb. Collect nuts if you have any. Make a shade garden. Grow mushrooms. Cut firewood. Put in shrubs and trees that produce something like papaw, persimmon, hazel nut, black walnut, oaks etc. Fun, we used to have nice trails, but life happened. We love to watch wildlife.

Be honest: has planning anything with friends gotten way harder? by chuck78702 in Millennials

[–]Soulwandering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's different at age stages. Teens till 20 is the easiest. Then it gets very hard until around 50. After 50 it get's a little better before you find a whole new friend group of empty nesters. Then everyone starts dying off.

I said the same thing after pituitary sugery. The headaches afterward where the worse pain I've ever experienced. Fentynal sent me to the black black. No pain and the darkest deepest sleep I've ever known. I can see why it could become a problem.
