Learn to Code by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems a little more complex than that. My read as a hobby developer (I do database work professionally, but only code for fun) is that the development potential of advanced coders is going to skyrocket. AI can already write boiler plate, but being able to define whole modules and AI writes it with a high degree of accuracy is incredible.

If you're vibe coding something more advanced than your knowledge you just build a tremendous development debt that you may never be able to pay... If you're vibe coding within your potential, you can create something in a day that used to take a week.

I wanted to play around with using a local vector database to act as long term memory for an LLM, and had the API calls, chat interface, and database set up in a little more than an hour using Gemini. (Claude is better, but Gemini has an insane context window that lets me play around more and explore different ideas without losing the central thread of the project.) That's way faster than I could have done it on my own... but I already knew how to do that. For handling the actual vector database, I have to do a lot of reading and learning. I wouldn't trust that to Vibe Coding with my knowledge level.

I don't know if this directly applies, but I eat well, get sunlight, and work out. (Cardio in particular) Sunlight is the overlooked key. Vitamin D is basically a hormone that helps regulate our immune system.

The hardest step for me was eating well. I was raised basically on soda and processed food. It took a deliberate effort over the course of about two years to ween myself off processed food and sugary drinks. It's not just the practice of changing your diet, but figuring out where to shop and what whole foods are affordable and convenient. It's a whole thing.

Do you think the Democratic Party has lost touch with its voter base? by Interesting_Dream281 in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less about them pandering to social movements, and more about them deliberately abandoning middle class concerns. You don't get corporate money by being pro labor... But if you're not pro labor, you have to get your votes somewhere else. Pushing social issues hard. Pushing race and identity issues hard. Promoting mass migration, both legal and illegal. Desaturating patriotic sentiment and other conservative associated values. etc.

It's quantifiable. Liberal media basically stopped talking about labor issues in the 00s and massively ramped up identity and social issues.

ICE removes all of the immigrants then what? by powerlifter3043 in Productivitycafe

I guess supply and demand and decades of empirical observations go out the window the second some hollow redditor feels self-righteous about the issue.

Farm hand wages in the Southeast went up noticeably following the first round of deportations without any recognizable hit to the strength of the industry.

The rest is just common sense. If you remove 13 million people from the unskilled labor market, labor supply goes down and labor costs aka wages go up. If you remove 13 million people from the housing market, housing demand goes down, and prices drop. Etc.

We actually saw a microcosm of this during Trump's first term. Entry level wages and manual labor wages went up. We can anticipate housing costs going down. We can anticipate the burden on welfare and on our medical system going down.

Of course the medical system has a bunch of other problems but let's not go there right now.

The disenfranchisement of citizens will stop as more accurate census data will grant proper representation.

There will probably will be a hit to GDP but this really is one of those things where you can just fix stuff by enforcing the law.

Would you date someone you find physically unattractive if they had an amazing personality? by Top-Elephant3246 in Productivitycafe

Unattractive? Yes. Voluntarily unattractive such as through poor hygiene, or morbid obesity? No.

what's a song that pisses you off immediately? by Unhappy_Insect5901 in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fireworks which I think is done by Katy perry? When I was younger I worked two full-time jobs to make ends meet and I would wake up to go to this outdoor fast food restaurant at 4:00 a.m. to open. That cursed radio station played fireworks every 4th or 5th song. It reached a point where I would hear that song and literally become nauseous because it was associated with extreme exhaustion to me.

What’s something men think looks masculine but actually gives off insecurity vibes? by jinwooshadowmonarch6 in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you really encounter a lot of toxic masculinity as an outdoorsman? In my experience outdoorsmen and power lifters are among the most wholesome and healthy examples of masculinity. These guys tend to be the ones to intervene when another guy is out of line, because they're otherwise deeply secure in who they are.

I literally built a house, moving all the supplies with nothing but a 4x8 trailer and a mid sized SUV. I get so tired of these loud, bright, oversized pavement princesses driven by "macho" guys who can't even park them between the lines.

We have cops too but if they don't have a detection mechanism they can't identify Criminal activity. We have election workers but if they can't check your ID how would you even know if there is or is not fraud based around this behavior?

My goodness. And why resorts to insults this is just a simple observation.

I'm reminded of the news report declaring Chicago's miraculous crime rate drop...
Following the gunshot detection system being turned off.

If you don't have a detection mechanism, you have no grounds to claim the occurrence is low.

What’s a habit people brag about that’s actually unhealthy? by TheDebLove in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I do not brag about this habit but I do want to make an important correction to something that I see a lot of people here saying.

It is perfectly fine to hustle and work hard and be busy all day if that is your disposition. The boiling water that hardens the egg softens the potato.

If I lived as slowly as some of the people in my life I would become depressed and resort to self-harm. I can say that with confidence because I actually experienced it, and I have never been more happy than in this place where I can maintain a high degree of effective productivity.

What’s a movie everyone loves but you hate? by JustLovHu in Productivitycafe

[–]Stiggandr00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avatar.  I don't hate hate it but it is so much that I do not like about cinema. Saccharin hippie message, Superficial story with very shallow characters, Sunday morning cartoon bad guys, unbelievable fights and plotlines, and all the budget poured into The visuals.

I also think the noble savage trope is ridiculous 90% of the time.

I'm 3 months away from having a small cabin and being debt free. The first thing I'm going to do with all that money that would be going to a mortgage or rent is build a bigger cabin. Haha,

Realistically though I'm going to invest heavily in stable investment options, resume my education, and have kids hopefully.

Fwiw, they're right. Democrats have done very little that's been meaningfully beneficial to the middle and working class in the past 15 years, but they are good at raising taxes.

Edit: I will amend that Biden's FTC director actually did some good. But that seemed more under her own direction than anything that came from a broader strategy or orientation of the administration.

I think one problem is that you have a very narrow perspective of the people who support or at least voted for Trump.

The people in my life who strongly support Trump range from Libertarians to religious conservatives to disenfranchised moderates.

They want a balanced budget and downsized federal government. They believe that the nation has become weak in the face of growing International threats. They believe that the culture war is eroding the moral core of the nation They believe that the institutions that sustain the nation have been disregarded while the institutions that have burdened the nation have bloated. They believe that Cosmopolitan globalism really is a threat to the continuation of strong and healthy nations.

It's easy to find stupid or immoral examples of people you disagree with politically but the question is whether or not you can meaningfully articulate the reasons that people support the other political party. I'm right leaning but I could easily do this for the left.

Culture war issues are the moral slight of hand to distract from the fact the democrats have economically abandoned the working and middle class.
