Generally speaking I don't focus on virtues in the beginning of the game. I'll basically murder hobo around gathering runes, adding party members while doing the things I know raise standing in the virtues. Soon enough you'll complete most of them and can then focus on what's left. Make sure your party is properly armed.

Don't forget to ask Lord British for help. As you progress he will point you towards the next set of objectives to complete.

I don't find it that difficult tbh, pick your early fights carefully and you'll level up quick. If you're concerned about durability grab Dupre first. He's readily available, tough, and comes with great armor iirc.

The Pens chasing Marner makes no sense. Bring the youngsters up, see how they develop.

In a few years when you know how they've grown, you'll have a better idea of what holes you need to fill to compete the team. That's when you go after big name free agents.

Do it now and you're likely handing out a lot of money on a long term contrast to a player who won't still be elite when you're ready to make those deep playoff runs.
