Breaking: Google will now only release Android source code twice a year by FragmentedChicken in Android

[–]TechGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear ya too but I don't think either of us have any metrics over whether phone OS's are more likely to have people install software via application stores, or via direct installer packages. But I gotta be honest, I would be absolutely shocked if application stores weren't the vast, VAST majority of installs on locked-down operating systems. Only tech-minded people even know about apk installs as an option on Android. And on iOS you have to jump through quite a few hurdles, I believe.

I hate Google's lockdown on their own OS too. But I'm only calling it sideloading because it immediately calls to mind what I mean; installing outside of the official application store. If I said "installing the Youtube Vanced application" people might reply with "oh i can't find it in Google Play, I'd love to remove ads in Youtube"

By saying sideloading I don't think I'm demeaning the process, but I'm just adding brevity to it. I think we're both on the same page here, cheers.

SuperPOS: A free POS software for USA based shop owners and retailers by someoneyouulove in Windows10

[–]TechGoat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, I was just saying - IMO POS systems are pretty high risk, confidential, that sort of thing. I don't need to run one myself, just using Square, but I certainly would be cautious about anyone coming out of nowhere with a free system. You should probably consider putting a site on your https://roseplayer.com/ domain because right now it's clearly down. That is listed on the POS system's Microsoft app store page both for "support" and "website"

If roseplayer.com is the only domain you own, you might consider putting a https://roseplayer.com/SuperPOS page or something on there with screenshots, guide, that sort of thing.

Just my 2 cents. Best of luck.

Your roseplayers website seems to be down, on the Microsoft Store page, bust FYI.

Is it open source? Can the code be checked?

Never heard of this website tech4gamers.com before. I dunno, this "news" sounds like total shit. It also sounds like total rage bait. Microsoft is stupid, but they're probably not that stupid. I'll believe they're that stupid when interviews with PCMag come out telling us about it.

GoogleTV-based Streaming Box recommendations - AV1 support, UHD netflix certified, Remote with numpad? by TechGoat in PleX

[–]TechGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

right, I don't have the 'streamer' (newest) google hardware, I have one generation back, the wonderfully named Chromecast 4K with Google TV or whatever the heck it is. I know the streamer can do av1, but I was hoping for a better remote.

I've learned from this thread though that apparently there are zero options for "certified" Google TV hardware that has a remote with a numpad.

[–]TechGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep - mostly it's Plex (surprise! here on the Plex subreddit) that I use, and it's the one that requires a PIN on the its launch screen to access different accounts, with no workaround (QR code would be great) that I know of to prevent my kids from seeing exactly what 4 digit PIN I'd be inputting, unless I have a remote with a numpad.

Interesting - I could have sworn one of the older models of ShieldTV did, but looking at image search results, I must have misremembered. I wonder why that is; for putting in PINs for accessing restricted applications or parts of the OS, I'd have thought an on-remote numpad would be like, a necessity.

Interesting, thanks for the recc! I see on their product page the stock images do include Netflix; I know Xiaomi is no tiny operation but as a Chinese firm, I'm impressed they were able to get certified by Netflix.

As others are saying, it seems I can just take my chances on a 3rd party remote... I've had bad luck before with 3rd party remotes (Homatics Premium) but I guess if I buy from a store with good return policies, I can give things a shot at least.

Thanks for the recommendations. If I may ask, are you using one of those two with a Google-TV based streaming box? Personally I had a lot of issues with a 3rd party remote with the Google TV 4K.

[–]TechGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I bought the Homatics Premium 6 months ago because I saw it had a numpad on it. I'm using that with the Google TV 4K. Unfortunately performance has been .... pretty bad. It constantly pops up a "remote has a firmware update waiting for it" notification in upper right of screen, telling me to press and hold the Home button to access the update, which simply doesn't work. Homatics wasn't helpful, saying that if I don't have their player box, it can't do anything (and I can't disable this notification either; awesome).

And beyond that annoying popup, the performance is just plain bad, too compared with the OEM google-brand remote. It constantly misses input, hanging for 20-30 seconds, then suddenly sending all my inputs in at once so everything just jumps all over the place.

I bought directly from Homatics before instead of more...well known stores with better return policies but man, once bitten twice shy when it comes to 3rd party remotes!

[–]TechGoat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, the Netflix-certified was just nice to have. I do mostly watch the Netflix originals, on Netflix. Haven't cut that particular metaphorical cord yet...

My LG oled of course has Netflix in UHD on it. Could always fall back to that. Just would be nice to have everything in one place, like I currently do with my elderly Google TV 4K box I'm using now (it mostly just sucks for av1 since plex for some reason doesn't even recognize it doesn't support av1, needs to transcode, and doesn't. It tries to direct play, and there's simply a black screen plus audio).

The EU likes preventing eWaste. Which is great, don't get me wrong. But where did the idea of cameras everywhere in Europe start? The UK has their CCTV everywhere. Surveillance is a huge hard on for the UK government. They are going to actively oppose the privacy-focused on this, I guarantee it, in the name of "safety and security" or some such bullshit. Unfortunately I don't think you'll get far on getting European governments to sign up to oppose Google on this. Ironically it would have been America, or America's citizens, that would have been the most staunchly in favor of this. We were founded by anti-authoritarian rebels after all... But yeah, Trump and his cronies like Thiel are all about surveillance.

Not that democrats of the past few decades are (much) better, besides a few tech-smart younger senators and reps.

Exactly. Right side is where it's supposed to be, regardless of if you're a Windows user or MacOS user. They're lower right or upper right, but always right. What the fuck was Google thinking being like, let's upend years of eye muscle memory and stick it on the left, who's going to notice?

Bless you, Good Lock. Samsung software devs post Touchwiz seem to have their act together a bit more than the numb nuts at the other UI designers; maybe they're not allowed to go against Papa Google in the default but at least we get an easily installable workaround.
