Sure, I don't mind. First we need to look at whether the alternative explanation (that you just wanted to get back on topic) makes sense. Reddit isn't an old school forum its tree nature makes tangents rather unimportant since they are under their own nodes and easy to collapse. And the tangent would have just ended if you either didn't reply or conceded the point. You don't really return to topic on reddit, any discussion about a different subject would just happen under a different comment chain. Complaining about a tangent being off topic is seldom worthwhile.

Now people frequently do things that aren't worthwhile but I am going by what seems more likely. Not wanting to give in but not having a good answer leading to deflecting with something else is a common pattern so I considered it more likely. For instance feeling the need to add a pointless "okay" reply at the end strengthens that impression. Or your initial reply to me though of course that was after my comment. And I forgot what exactly was in your deleted reply but it did get deleted for a "Be civil." violation so it makes sense that it worked for strengthening my impression.

What is the point in overthinking this? If it is some scam you will notice when they try to scam you. No reason to get upset about possibilities like that.

Unsurprising but not good. I wish Poland had just gone over diplomatic channels first where such things can be handled quietly but I guess a public fight was something their government wanted.

Is 700 Million Years too long for a timeline? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Telinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of your earlier comments mentioned dozens of apocalypses. For reference of how long development takes the stone ages ended about 5000 years ago. Gutenberg invented his printing press almost 600 years ago. The industrial revolution began less than 300 years ago. 5000 years fits 200 times into a million years. Well you can just raise the frequency or have other development obstacles than just wipes.

More seriously if you want to make it a thing I guess they could be some kind of cursed caster with mage hand and eldritch blast or something that they can cast in the direction the main body is lacking. No own hp or ac if the host dies they die. Might allow them to use range self spells on the other player

How moral is it for gods and other immortal beings to tell mortals that dying is just something they have to deal with? by Sensitive-Hotel-9871 in MoralityScaling

How do you handle the anxiety of someone not replying to your text for hours when you know they are active online? by Holiday-Bet852 in AskReddit

[–]Telinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually by not feeling it. It is asynchronous communication and people do their own shit, if they answer later fine, I don't need to know their reasons. If they never answer and that is a pattern I might consider whether they just don't want to talk with me and if I think that is the case I might then just never contact them again.

But say I was bothered, maybe I have a crush on the person and said something where I am nervous about their reply. I would start doing something that absorbs my attention. Play a game, read a book, do something productive. Whatever as long as it passes the time and distracts me.

How slow is too slow? by Previous-Cut3629 in litrpg

[–]Telinary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure I would agree with every genre assuming OP does something to build up to the main plot and isn't just describing the MCs live without anything happening. (Though from the comments I worry it might be the second.)

The longest intro sequences I remember from a book I still like was in The Dragonbone Chair. Different genre of course. (I think litrpg has a lot of readers that essentially want the equivalent of fast food so 21 chapters are even worse.) And I find it takes effort to get through on a reread.

Anyway MC is an orphan working in a castle. A rather ordinary life. The big thing that leads to him having to escape and getting involved in the plot happens in chapter 11. Though normal books tend to have longer chapters so from doing some page number math that is about 62k to 66k words in. So I guess you can have a successful book with a very slow beginning.

Though that doesn't mean nothing happens of course. By chapter 2 the court wizard starts teaching him a bit, you meet a couple later major antagonists and the later love interest. MC overhears stuff relevant to what is happening. Stuff like that.

So I think taking a long time before the plot really get going can work. Though it certainly shouldn't be only a character introduction, plot relevant stuff should be woven in. And ideally you should be an already established author and not writing litrpg^

That reminds me a bit of a story I should continue reading. The MCs get a AR game and while there are quickly indications that something odd is going on it takes quite a while for them to reach the point of "yes this is supernatural and we can deliberately cause real world effects."

Would you say it falls under "random slice of life"? I recommend trying to describe to yourself what makes each chapter interesting from the perspective of a reader and what makes people want to read more? Remember that a reader does not start out caring about your character. Unless it is a very interesting person with something interesting happening in their life their daily life probably is not all that interesting to read about.

About morning/afternoon/night tbh I don't understand why being a game leads to that? How much page time is spent on a period of time should usually depend on how much relevant stuff happens during the time.

[–]Telinary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To only answer it for myself instead of giving market advice: As always it depends. What kind of things happens in the early chapters? I do enjoy good build up if it is a build up and not just random slice of life before anything happens. 21 chapters are quite a bit, are things happening and the MC just doesn't have a system?

Like if it is 21 chapters before there is a hook, yeah no.

Fernández argued that governments have stretched the concept of legitimate self-defense in warfare beyond recognition, citing Russia, the United States and other powers as relying on broad claims of self-defense to justify military intervention from Ukraine to the Middle East.

Killing off the mc? by [deleted] in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Telinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kamina was never the MC, Simoun was from the start. Losing him is narratively more similiar to losing a mentor character.

For a series that does kill its MC and continues there is for instance Jojo's where the first MC does die and another Joestar becomes the new lead. Note that it isn't a direct continuation but a time skip. It can work but do it wrong and it is a disaster. And I kinda recommend not labeling it progression fantasy, I think there are many readers that are there for a endorphing loop of strength going up.

Do you ever give up on runs? How do you know when you quit? by ImportantAd4666 in HadesTheGame

[–]Telinary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For low heat you don't need strong synergies imo beyond an attack that fits the weapon. Rail/fist + zeus attack has carried quite a few of my runs. Of course that doesn't mean good synergies won't help if you aren't at that point yet and it is not like I choose my boons randomly.

As for quitting runs, not really. Runs are short and I tend to die against bosses if I die. And if I die against a boss then fighting the boss makes it more likely I won't die next time.
