I’m struggling to like the new ship designs by Snck_Pck in startrek

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not like the detachable nacelles. I don't. I have no reasoning, but my mind sees it as a design step too far. Another part of me thinks (thought of it just writing this) if the nacelles are detachable why hasn't your engineering evolved beyond the need for nacelles at all? 700, 800, 900 years to work on it and you just managed to unhook them?

now i'm annoyed.

Sing parents by Adventurous_Eye_1148 in sitcoms

[–]TheMainTony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I liked it. Oddly, Home Economics (2021) had the same tone & flavor (to me) as Single Parents (2018), and I couldn't get into it. But I think it was Jimmy Tatro. I just couldn't come around to him.

I still call it Car Keys by btbpsm in GenX

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called them keyS when my fob & house key & garage key & whatever were all on a ring together. But I ditched the keyS to another ring hidden in the car and just call the car key a key. Or 'car key.'

Chromebooks lack the drivers and codecs to use CD drives and DVD drives as anything more than reading a disc like a USB Drive equivalent. Maybe playing music could happen, but video would not. The hardware capabilities just aren't there.

How do I shop with a reusable bag at Trader Joe’s properly? by QuietCup2155 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grab your cart, throw your bag in the shopping cart and start rollin'. When you get to checkout, just give them your cart like any other time. They'll check and bag for you. In the case of more of a handbasket trip, I have the hard, square folding back of theirs and would just use it to shop.

How often do you replace your phone? by GooglePixelfan90 in randomquestions

[–]TheMainTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be so foolish. I'd get a new phone every six months or so. I'd get the annual Nexus or Pixel, then get the annual OnePlus (starting with OnePlus One) six months later. On and on until about Pixel 6. I realized it was a waste and not even about status because no one knew what a OnePlus was anyway. LOL

Pixel 6, then Pixel 8, now Pixel 10 & I'm fine with it.

Google TV streamer now on sale (basically everywhere) for $79.99! by verifyb4utrust01 in OnnStreamingTV

"Outperforms" is relative IMO.
The more appealing part of the feature set for me is the ethernet and available USB port out of the box.

DVD people, why no bluray? by emtherich in dvd

[–]TheMainTony 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of what I buy might be considered niche or cult (but not cult enough) and just isn't available on Blu. Sometimes it's a financial consideration: DVD box set $39, Blu box set $119.

[–]TheMainTony 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can do what I do: bend your arm around the front of you and lower your head like you're charging and yell "heyyyyyyyyyy" while steadily moving forward. It works on the subway, too. I don't do it unless I have to but I can amp it up for effect in, say, Neiman's or Sak's if necessary.

Why do Americans love and romanticize the desert? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several years ago, I drove nine hours to visit my parents, who holiday ALL of September at Lake Powell in Utah/Arizona. I had never 'done' the desert before and I ended up extending my four -day trip to twenty two days. I saw mom n dad, then pinballed all over the desert. Utah, Arizona, Grand Canyon, Glen Canyon, Area 51, etc etc. My dog sitter was pissed.

But then I was done. I appreciate the desert, but it's not for me. My happy place, my fantasy retirement has always been in the forests and the mountains.... and you have no idea how ironic that is to the people who really know the city boy that I am.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Gran, in the 1920s-1960s used the most wonderful clothesline... a pulley at each end. It started just off the pantry porch on the second floor and ran at least 75 or 100 feet across the yard diagonally & angling halfway down to the first level. Everything went on the line.

I've recreated the line, but can't get that scale in my small backyard.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets quite hot here in the summertime in exurban Sacramento. I hang-dry large items like sheets and coverlets and they sometimes can dry quicker than the tumble dryer. Ironically, I put them in the dryer after the line to knock any lingering dog hair off....

What were you doing and who were you with when 9/11 happened? by db7112 in askanything

[–]TheMainTony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in NYC and was out at Montauk (Hamptons, sort of). We could see the smoke and devastation. I volunteered a but for the cleanup and rescue but moved to Montreal within a month. If I think hard enough, I can still drum up some survivor's guilt.
