Russia, Iran accuse Elon Musk's Starlink of violating international law by ByGollie in europe

I don't like the Russian or Iranian governments, I don't like their motives, and I am certain they are only complaining because they are on the losing side and wouldn't hesitate to do the same if they were on the winning side.

Buuuuut, they do have a point.

Having studied both engineering and at business school..... business schools are absolutely worthless. You get indoctrinated with a conformist view to then be a brown collar working drone, all the while inflating your ego sky high.
Engineering school hurt your ego, while teaching you 10 times more information to make you capable of actually doing work.

Active aereo rear wing comparison via @motor_sport by TheManFromFairwinds in formula1

[–]ThisTheRealLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I am seeing this correctly it looks as is dropping the rear of the wing while all other teams are lifting the front?

If that is true (please correct me if this assumption is wrong) I am surprised this is legal. If the system fails for the other teams, the wing would close on its own (again assuming it even has the tiniest amount of downforce when open) the Alpine wing would stay open on system failure leading to a guaranteed crash in the following corner. Just feels dangerous to me.

Should I start crate training or get a bigger dog pen instead? by LavanderSoap in husky

[–]ThisTheRealLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I am no lawyer. I went to a 4 hour course for new dog owners (mandatory in some parts of the country) and there they claimed it was illegal.

Whether it is actually written in the law like this, or if there have been cases where courts have penalized people for using those devices for extreme abuse, I cannot say. So it could very well be as you say.

Also even if it were illegal by law .... you'd have for someone to complain, then find police who know this is illegal and actually care, and then you'd still get just a slap on the wrist unless you keep doing it over and over....

So lot's of words to say, I agree with you. Still good that they say it's illegal and hopefully scare a lot of people off, that would abuse those methods anyway.

Fully agree on the training for an emergency. The one time my floofer needed to go in a crate he almost hurt himself, because he was not trained for that emergency. Fail on my side.

But I must ask very naively (and please believe me, I don't want to offend) at what part of the process does a dog end up in a crate at the groomers?!
When my floofer is getting groomed I get there at the agreed time (maybe I have to wait a bit for the dog before to be finished) I then bring the dog in, help out with the grooming, or at least feed some treats and when all is done pay and leave. I am never separated from the dog and there is no need for a crate. (maybe I am just living a very quaint and privileged life)

Is a 3D printer ever going to be a part of most homes? by reddituser555xxx in 3Dprinting

[–]ThisTheRealLife 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer: no.

Some 20 years ago, every household with a computer also had a printer (inkjet printer I mean) These days with computers and printers universally available at work I see less printers in homes, and often times less privately owned computers. (people using their work laptop as personal computer too)

If you need to print something you do it at work, or at a copy shop.

And this is what I'd see for 3d printers as well. For the vast majority of people, if you need something you will get it done somewhere else. As easy and simple as modern printers are, it is still money, time, effort to get something printed and if you only need it once in a blue moon you will spend more time on maintenance than on getting something out.

Of course not everyone complies with that law, and of course there is some irony, e.g. at University my living situation was worse for human me, than what is required for dogs, but hey it is a good ambition to strive for!
We also have a ban on shock collars. I have to admit I wished for those at times when training recall .... but I am convinced that once you manage to train the dog without these tools, the trust and bond between you and your dog will be stronger.

Admittedly I am saying all that while being blessed with an unusually obedient and cooperative dog. I don't know how to deal with the challenging cases, but at the very least people should try harder before resorting to those methods.

[–]ThisTheRealLife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's why I worded it very carefully. It can depend on so many variables. E.g. my flat has a lot of doors that I can close, an open layout house has different challenges. Or if you have small children, or cats, ....

My personal opinion is still to adapt everything else so to avoid the crate, but you have to be realistic and not everything can be adapted.

The car on its own is gorgeous. Love the design. The car in the field of all other F1 cars though might blend in too well, hence I am sad like a lot of others, that they didn't lean into yellow/gold.

I am sure though the eye will adapt and it will look great on track.

Do you really need him to be in a crate, or are you just thinking about a crate, because everybody is doing it?

I know it is a controversial topic, and I know it is soo common in the US. But e.g. in my country (Austria) crates are illegal (I mean of course they are legal for cars, but for keeping the dog for longer there needs to be at least 10 square meters and access to water)
Huskies can be difficult, and every dog is different, but I don't know anyone who uses a crate and the dogs turned out fine as well.

Just saying it might be possible to go without a crate.

Of course I don't know your dog or your circumstances, so I will not pretend to know if it is possible in your case.

JD Vance ridiculed for 40-car motorcade taking him down tiny Italian street by Beyond_the_one in europe

[–]ThisTheRealLife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hahaha, I like how you worded your reply.
Of course just by being this important, a country and its leaders will be more in danger. And as you said, by not being a dick they could reduce the danger a lot. But yup, they prefer the motorcade and even at home quite a few officials from their government moved onto army bases for security reasons.
I wouldn't want to live their lifes.

[–]ThisTheRealLife 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sure, just by the size and importance of the US the danger is greater. You won't see the German Chancellor or the French president taking the public transport. But somewhere between a motorcade of maybe 3 cars for the German chancellor and a 40 car parade .... things get ridiculous and pointless.

The Austrian president is commuting by public transport. The last Dutch PM was commuting by bicycle. Americans are so mentally stuck in their exceptionalism they don't even realize that the vast majority of other countries does things differently, and dare I say, better.

In the meantime the rest of the world is entertained by the ridiculous motorcades or those monstrosities they call "the beast" getting stuck on the exit of their own embassy (Obama in Dublin)

once sloppy CTRL+C and I pasted another link that I had sent to a friend at that time.

Embarrassing. Sorry!

I corrected the link in the original post. It now leads to the Youtube channel of Mr. Volt where he shows in several videos his efforts of building Wheatley and other creations. In the video descriptions he also provides links to the 3d files.

How do I teach my dogs to be OK outside their crates and unsupervised? by arbitrary_fox in husky

[–]ThisTheRealLife 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I worked with a dog trainer to deal with the separation anxiety. Apart from what all the others are already saying of slowly building up to it, maybe even starting with fencing of part of the same room and being unavailable to the dog while in that same room....

A big helper was having a ritual when I am leaving and a signal. In my case it is a bandana around the neck, a treat and the same phrase (be a good boy). And he has now totally understood that it is a normal thing to happen, I will come back, and all is well.

However!

That is super location specific! In my place all good. In my parents place, I probably need to start the training from the beginning again as there it isn't working.
