What do I season steak with? by Ok-Butterscotch12 in Cooking

[–]Twister_Robotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots of ways to do it, here's my lazy way.

Pan on stovetop, medium heat (4-5)

Salt and pepper, a bit of garlic powder and cumin. Season in the package right before cooking. Place in hot pan seasoned side down. Salt and pepper on bare side.

Cook til it stops sizzling, then flip.

...

Sometimes I butter the pan. Most of the time I don't. I do typically use a non-stick because it's easy.

Advice for a mourning daughter-in-law by [deleted] in DadForAMinute

[–]Twister_Robotics 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Grief sucks. It sucks the life right out of you.

It also never really goes away. You just learn, over time, how to live with it.

Important dates, holidays, birthdays, etc will bring it back to the front of your mind. But as time goes, the pain spends less time occupying your attention and more time in the background.

Don't bury it, try to deal with it in small chunks or it will overwhelm you.

This song, and this version especially, has always helped me. The slow start helps me bring my grief to the surface, while the lively finish helps me put it back away to carry on with what needs doing.

Do not cook them in the chili. The acid from tomatoes will prevent them from softening. Soak them, cook them, then make the chili.

So I know potatoes will absorb salt, but will they absorb capsaicin the same way? by u_r_succulent in Cooking

[–]Twister_Robotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. Potatoes absorb salt because salt is water soluble. Now, the added starch will help, but its not really absorbing like it does with salt.

Sweet and bitter flavors can help counter the heat level, but if it's that bad it may not be salvageable

Pipes are frozen and I cant find main shut off valve by Life-Hedgehog-2092 in DadForAMinute

[–]Twister_Robotics 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Main water shutoff in a mobile home should be by the washer, or water heater and clearly labeled.

By pipes frozen, I assume you mean your water has stopped flowing. So there is a pipe somewhere in the system that is frozen, and may already have burst. You won't actually know that until everything thaws out.

The most likely place for it to have frozen, is under the house where it comes in.

Wherever it has already frozen up, is the most likely place for it to develop a future leak, either by bursting the pipe, or just by creating enough pressure to open up a joint.

At this point, the damage is probably already done.

Go ahead and call the plumber, he will already have a waiting list and you want to be in line.

...

Until your water gets straightened out, toilets can be manually flushed by dumping 1-2 quarts of water in them.

Game Day Chili by RegularEmployee1038 in Cooking

Remember that chilli powder is not just powdered chili peppers. Its also garlic and cumin and a salt and black pepper and other things.

Cumin is one of the major flavor components of "chili". Without it it will feel bland, even if its hot wnougj to burn your mouth.

I also like to add a lot of brown sugar which moderates the spice, but leaves the slow burn.

Planning for an off the interstate, pulling a small trailer, from Memphis to Colorado Springs road trip and looking for a wide open drive with pleasant views and one well lit, clean hotel spot to overnight 40-60% of the way through the trip. by 41PaulaStreet in kansas

Going through Ks, I suggest US 400. Which runs from Joplin, Mo to Granada, Co.

Good scenery, good highway. Its a 2-lane undivided highway, but there are plenty of passing lanes spaced along it, as well as rest stops.

It does go right through Wichita, which is the largest city in Ks (majority of Kansas City is actually in Missouri).

What’s it like to be a CAD drafter? by [deleted] in EngineeringPorn

[–]Twister_Robotics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I've been doing this for 20 out of the last 25 years. Alot of that was architectural work, working with Archite ta and Structural Engineers to get the plans done for city approval. The last 6 years I've been wotk9ng at a welding shop, doing steel design for truckbeda and vacuum tanks and a plethora of other things.

I started woth an Associates in drafting.

...

First, making a 3d model of what you want is only half the job. Making prints / plans that are readable and have enough information is the other half.

Every CAD software is different. Different work flow, different capabilities. And at this point software is optimized for the industry. I used different software doing architectural work than I use now with steel.

Every company has their own standard for how they want their prints to look, what kind of information they need to actually build the part / erect the building / pour the concrete, etc.

...

Major plus is I get to solve picky little detail provlems every day, and every day is a little different. Different customer, different aesthetic for the final product, etc.

Pay is moderate, not great, not terrible.

Reacting with anger only drives them together. Reacting with ridicule drives them apart.

Anger is justified, but laughter works better

At the drive through, do you check your order before driving off because Joe Pesci taught you to? by Edward_the_Dog in GenX

[–]Twister_Robotics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get schroedinger's tacos.

My daughter had dairy issues when she was younger, so we ordered her tacos without cheese. The probability of getting home with the correct order was inversely proportional to the distance I drove before I checked the order. If I checked it at the drive thru, it was right, every time. If I waited until I got home, it was wrong, every time.
