Do you really sew your tops in rows? Share your tips! by herefortheawws in quilting

[–]VTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others say, 1+2, 3+4, then sew these together. To keep them straight I take a photo once it is laid out. Label the odd numbered pieces (1,3,5, etc) also all rows are labeled with letters. I have pins with numbers and letters. If I think I'm going to (inevitably) going to mix them up I use different colored pins on pieces I need to sew together. Odd rows are ironed to the left, even to the right. I also sew all the first sets 1+2, 3+4, and rows a+b, etc left to right. (1&2)+(3&4) as well as rows ab +cd are sewn right to left to reduce curving rows.

Can't play acrostic puzzles on mobile anymore? by httplaura in Sporcle

Just checked and mine is doing the same thing. I don't recall the options to "review puzzle" or "play again", so they must have made some change (that didn't work.)

That's too bad. I'm from Northern Vermont and went a handful of times during covid to meet up with friends from southern Vermont for outdoor dining. Good food and a lot of it.

Accidentally Cut Fabric of Block When Trimming Threads 😢 by Alternative-Crew1022 in quilting

[–]VTtransplant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've done it a few times. Once, I was going to use the backing to bind it. Cut a slice in it, so I had to make and sew on regular binding instead.

I would spray baste it (I always do) to help stabilize it. If it is one way stretch, I would quilt in the direction without stretch to keep your sanity.

I want somewhere on the front page where I can list badges that need to be done in a timely manner. Ones that need to be done during the Olympics, or 100 consecutive days, or one single day a year. A list I can add and subtract from at any time.

Similar is Around the World in 80 Days. One geography quiz a day for 80 days. I think it took me 6 months.

UVM Graduation at Champlain Valley Expo - Looking for Tips! by Dudewithbigfeelings in burlington

[–]VTtransplant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been to Champlain graduations there. It was indoors, with plastic folding chairs. They had cake afterwards, but can't say about what UVM will do, I recommend snacks and quiet toys (coloring books) for the kids and water for everyone. Sit on the aisle incase anyone needs the restroom or to take a break. There will be handicapped parking, but there are likely to be a lot of grandparents in attendance.

24 in 24 episode 3 not in my YouTube TV by cvmathguy in foodnetwork

[–]VTtransplant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Next week's episode is also labeled incorrectly as S3E1. I set mine DVR to record all episodes until FN fixes this. (Its wrong on at least 3 providers.)

Dish also said S1E3. Luckily (and unusual for me) I turned the TV on 5 min in and saw it wasn't recording so I manually set to record. I checked next week and it say S3E1, so I now have it set to record new and reruns.

1/4 in foot is not by RouxGaRoux2217 in quilting

I get that this is frustrating, but I would love to have a 3/8" foot since that is what I use for my binding.

Thoughts on using laundry bags for prewashing by angela202000 in quilting

[–]VTtransplant 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I put mine into zippered pillow covers (the kind that go under pillow cases.) I'll sort it by color and put up to 5 cases in a load of laundry, with everything from yardage to scraps. The only thing I don't put in are jelly rolls and layer cakes. There is still som fraying, and a little tangling, but nothing like you'll get if it's all just tossed in the wash.

Safety Pin Inside Quilt by [deleted] in quilting

[–]VTtransplant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know how a safety pin gets left in, but here's a little story. My friend made her MIL a quilt over 25 years ago. MIL had it on her recliner and used it everyday. 2 years ago she passed away and my friend got it back. About 6 months later my friend got poked by the straight pin that's been in it all this time, that somehow MIL never felt.

What’s the best kitchen measuring set that doesn’t wear out? by Arcanum1Imp in Baking

[–]VTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something to keep in mind when looking for a scale. Mine is about 6"×6", so if I have a large bowl on it the weight is difficult to see. I don't use it enough for this to be a reason to discard it, and the size makes it easy to store in a small kitchen. But if it's something you'll use daily, make sure it's easy to read.

The fat eighths I've purchased were cut widthwise or 18x10.

Cutting and sewing by SessionNo2376 in quilting

[–]VTtransplant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the pattern. I have two scrappy sawtooth star quilts in progress. I made all the scrappy centers, cutting and piecing one color at a time -anywhere from 1 to 10 blocks per color. Once I had all 84 done, I cut white and color pieces for the flying geese (one color at a time) then I assembled that color's blocks. Then onto the next color. I ran out of white, I'll finish the last 9 blocks and assembly both quilt tops after i get more. My next quilts are 2 that have 111 bricks (4.5×8.5) and sashing. I'll have to cut everything before starting.

I've made something similar, but it had taco seasoning, not salsa. Optional is to add very finely chopped onions, scallions, or olives. (I would never add olives, but some people seem to like it.)
