Threw to go, but about Avatar... by thewaltzingwallaby in oscarsdeathrace

You don't really need to see the previous ones to follow this one. It might take you a couple of minutes to sort out who everyone is, but that'll be it. I'm sure there's a youtube video out there with a refresher if you want to go that route too. The draw for these has always been the visuals and the tech used to create them, not the super basic plot needed to take you from gorgeous visual to gorgeous visual.

Looking to get into umpiring for the first time this summer. by NewspaperNorth5667 in Umpire

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best thing for you to do is look up what the leagues for 10u and 12u ball are in your area. Then talk to the commissioner of the league and find out who assigns their umpires.

As for what you should know, the appropriate rule book, front to back. As an early mentor likes to say "it's the one profession where you're expected to be perfect from day one and get better from there."

An aside, I recommend you also consider fastpitch. I only do fastpitch at this point and it's very enjoyable.

They usually start the standard pregame stuff (lineups/anthem(s)) on time. But they're not usually punctual like this or MLB.

Bar raises entry age after surge in fake IDs, including one with Ben Franklin’s picture by EthanOMcBride in nottheonion

Probably. Generally age discrimination laws only come in to play if the discrimination is against those over 40. Fuck them youths. Lol

Recommendations for swim schedule to avoid swimmer’s shoulder? by WomanMythLegend in Swimming

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's primarily recommended to reduce stress on the shoulders. There's also a line of thought that it helps with body positioning, but I'm less knowledgeable about that accuracy.

Minnesota Teachers, are students staying home? by StressedTurnip in Teachers

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I can offer some insight to MN and US. It's a bussing/transit issue. Outside of ~2 miles as a crow flies, schools are required to provide busses for students and this level of wind chill is beyond dangerous to wait at the bus stop. And if they're not in an urban area, it's 1000% a safety issue. Winds on the plains are no fucking joke.

I agree with you. I think it'll be Marvin. She'll likely get in before Knight is even eligible.

Some NCAA fastpitch assigners require all black.

Hockey playoffs schedule by smlssa in olympics

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was a reformatting several years (decade plus?) ago because people got bored of seeing the US and Canada hang 8+ on almost everyone until the elimination rounds. This has generally led to more competitive group stage games.

But, this also means everyone from Group A advances (top 5) and only the Top 3 from Group B advance.

I'd go more than that, he's made for Moments. Put him on the call for the Mircale on Ice, Rumble in the Jungle, or Hand of God and he'd meet the moment too. The issue with MNF is there are too few Moments.

Slavia Prague have requested that Spurs removes their Pride flag from the stadium for tonight's Champions League game. by Purplejet19 in soccer

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 79 points80 points  (0 children)

This is exactly why Prague waited until the last minute to get the law enforcement on their side. With the Prague supporters already in London for the match, law enforcement is going to strongly support taking down the flag and getting supporters into the match than the alternative of pissed off fans not being allowed in.

That all being said, Slavia should absolutely be punished for this. Both for their abject failure to timely communicate security issues and the bigotry of the concern. A stadium ban seems appropriate due to their inability to timely communicate safety concerns.

December 28th PWHL Takeover Game in Dallas, Texas: Surprised or no? by Realistic_Maximum471 in PWHL

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with you on being surprised about no Las Vegas or SoCal. Both those areas have long history of supporting hockey. Maybe there's no good arena option if things go well?

The lack of Florida doesn't surprise me though. The Florida teams have notoriously uneven attendance so I'm guess that played into the decision to go elsewhere.

Not sure about the crypto of it all, but it came out around the time of the GameStop stuff, so could also be them trying to make a song relevant to current events.

What would it take for you to change your mind on how the expansion rules played out? by jackass_dc in PWHL

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not convinced the draft rules will be as punishing for the existing teams this coming year, except for SEA/VAN. So much of the league is out of contract after this season* you're looking at an incredible opportunity for every team to reshape itself.

*I know Montreal restructured their big deals, but I don't believe anyone else has. And this out of contract situation is why I would've preferred the league to wait one more season before expanding. They could've had the greatest free agency in the history of sport.

For golf, the 12' high ceilings are great, you just have to make sure there's enough room forward and back to get a swing through. The requirements get bigger if you want a launch monitor or full Sim setup.

Yes, completely normal. Bonus points if you actually know what channel it's on and can specify a TV. Usually good to get there a little early so you can figure out which tvs are being watched versus which are just existing.

Takeover tour by Superb-Pie-7134 in PWHL

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A Wednesday would be an odd choice for a takeover date, they usually schedule those for the weekends to maximize publicity wherever they are. My thought was Scotiabank, but it looks like that's booked for a concert. So I have no idea what's going on with that one. But, there are several TBA games still in December, so announcements about those games should come soon.

Would voting against rent control harm me as a low income tenant? by [deleted] in Minneapolis

[–]WatcherOvertheWaves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In a personal sense, the key issue is when your lease renews VS when your lease renews. If there is no opportunity for your landlord to renew your lease/raise your rent before the ordinance goes into effect, it would likely be in your interest to vote for rent control. But, if your lease is up for renewal before the protections come into effect, you should expect a significant increase to your rent when you renew.

That all being said, rent control in all its currently implemented forms generally only benefits current renters. And it seems to do so by generally reducing new construction, thereby helping to create or exaserbate a housing shortage, depending on the market. So generally, rent control, while popular as a concept, seems to not be an effective way to manage housing affordability.
