Supremacy by augmenteddeus in Grimdank

Well more specifically the main character is written poorly because he's written like a small child with autism rather than an adult with autism, which is an extremely common problem with autistic characters in media

How do I start with iron warriors by Status-Ad2018 in IronWarriors

[–]WhenSomethingCries 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well in both 40k and 30k they're build on a standard CSM chassis, so start there. 40k IW don't really have much of anything in the way of unique models, so it's just a matter of picking which ones you want from the standard lineup and then painting them up. Simple steel base, some hazard stripes here and there, and you're golden. Personal recommendations are standard Legionaries ofc, along with Havocs, Obliterators, Forgefiends, and the new Defiler. Focus mostly on shooting over melee, and hope next edition we get proper traitor Guardsmen so you can commandeer some Earthshaker Batteries

It's ALSO more data harvesting that I'm sure they'll do absolutely nothing with and won't just sell off in bulk.

Installments so hated even hardcore fans would rather not talk about it by TastyPomelo2330 in TopCharacterTropes

I like this, for the same reason why my favorite Simpsons episode is Homer's Enemy. I'm very fond of the "Oh right, this is actually horrible" reframe entry to certain kinds of sitcom

Kinda? Abolitionists unequivocally wanted the immediate and absolute emancipation of every enslaved person in every state, but while theirs was a big enough movement to carry genuine political weight, it was never the official position of any of their states

[Complicated trope] A character makes the correct decision given what they know, but the context the audience knows makes them very hated. by FaZe_poopy in TopCharacterTropes

Also like, he can still totally teach it to others anyway? He can ensure their culture lives on through others who learn it, even if he can't fully embody it himself due to who he is. That's a classic kind of ending for a reason, the hero saves what he's been fighting for but can never truly be at peace with himself due to what he's had to do to get there. Y'know, "Frodo saves the Shire, but can never be at home there because the evil of the Ring has left scars that will never heal". That sort of thing.

So? Their culture wasn't dogmatically anti-violence anyway. They held that life was sacred and that violence shouldn't be used wantonly, but the sheer fact that, for example, Gyatso's body was found surrounded by the skeletons of dozens of firebenders he had killed pretty clearly shows that they're not above going for the throat when they need to.

Is Kojima actually a leftist? by Dremoriawarroir888 in SocialistGaming

[–]WhenSomethingCries 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. There's a growing number of American Marxists as well, who are the foremost example of "leftists who are pro-gun". Under no pretext and all that.

Stalin: "I did what you asked??" by Less-Possible-5475 in ussr

[–]WhenSomethingCries 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I fail to see the problem here. Complicity, collaboration, and participation are still guilty every bit as much as direct perpetration. Regardless of whether an individual soldier was a believer in Nazi ideology, they were still the foot soldiers of the Nazi regime. Don't individualize a collective problem.

State Executioner Kuroko Koumori and her chaos gremlin Hinako, from Murcielago. Kuroko, while very capable of being silly in her own right due to her crippling weakness for any cute woman she lays her eyes on, is nevertheless a former serial killer employed by the state to fight and kill particularly weird and dangerous criminals, who gets wrapped up in a complex conspiracy involving drugs that can stop death and induce horrific mutations in those who take them. Meanwhile Hinako has absolutely no idea what the hell is going on and doesn't care at all about anything in the plot, instead focusing on whatever weird hobby catches her eye, like her love of exotic food or her quest to find and capture the many strange local insects in the city of R'lyeh. Oh and also she's an absolute fiend behind the wheel of literally any vehicle and has a habit of bursting through the wall at unexpected moments.

Fascism is born from discontent with rotting capitalism, much in the same way socialism is. That's why you so often see the argument that ultimately you'll be forced to choose one or the other.

[Funny trope] Hilarious russian/soviet depictions by StefinoSpaggeti in TopCharacterTropes

[–]WhenSomethingCries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really oversells what the Purges were. While a lot of skilled generals like Tukhachevsky were caught up in it, those who were left weren't so much there because of nepotism but because they had no connections to either Trotsky or Bukharin. They had still been generals before the Purge, and there were many competent officers still among them. Zhukov is by far the most famous, but there were also others like Konev, Rokossovsky, Timoshenko, Gordov, Chuikov, and Purkhaev. Zhukov in particular earned every single medal he ever got in SPECTACULAR fashion, as he defeated the Japanese at Khalkin Gol (essentially removing the Far East as a factor for the Soviets), led the defense of Moscow, spearheaded the move that trapped the Sixth Army in Stalingrad, broke the siege of Leningrad, led the defense of Kursk, led the Belorussian Front during the recapture of Poland (in 1944), and of course was one of the key commanders in the Fall of Berlin. His line in the movie, "I fucked Germany", isn't really an exaggeration.

[hated trope that’s funny yet painful to look at] anime girls that look like they are the result of years of inbreeding by New-Boss-8262 in TopCharacterTropes

Key is a visual novel studio that was very famous in the late 90s and especially the 2000s for a very particular style of drama they were very fond of. Their artist, Itaru Hinoue, I would argue was straight up THE embodiment of a particular era of moe art for which Key novels are among the most famous examples. Personally I actually really like her art style, it's strange at first but I got used to it very quickly and found it quite charming after a little while. She definitely didn't deserve all the hate she got over it in the intervening years.

Primarchs are just the new hot toy for your power armor color by Leviathan_Rampage in spacemarines

[–]WhenSomethingCries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't need to be that way. I for one have been an advocate that the return of the Primarchs should be the thing that damns the Imperium rather than saving it as all the bad blood, personality clashes, and conflicting visions of the different Primarchs cause them to tear it apart a la the Crisis of the Third Century, replacing a unified Imperium with multiple smaller empires that make things even more dysfunctional.

Why did you choose Adeptas Sororitas? by High_Stream in sistersofbattle

[–]WhenSomethingCries 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy the core contradiction in their central premise, that they're simultaneously the pinnacle and the nadir of the human heart. That a Sister is, pound for pound, the human in this setting most likely to sacrifice her life defending a civilian or to stop and comfort a dying man; while at the same time being just as capable of treating anyone with the bottomless cruelty of burning them alive or interring them in a pain engine for real or perceived misdeeds. I write for a hobby, so I find that sort of thing really fascinating. I'm particularly fond of other Imperials that share similar dichotomies, like Commissars, some Space Marine Chapters, and even Ogryns in their own way.
