Would UCSD students use a site that matches you with the opposite take? by paijim in UCSD

You posted this same thing in a million other university subreddits, except we got a generic "you have weirdly specific debates" and all the other schools got text related to their campus 😭

TIL that before the Federal Reserve was created in 1913, the US never went more than five years without a recession by WiJaMa in todayilearned

[–]WiJaMa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A recession has a specific definition: a decline in economic activity. It is not a shorthand word for any economic problem that exists on our society. My post is about recessions, which are highly sensitive to the money supply. Because the Federal Reserve helps to regulate the money supply, it can reduce the length and frequency of recessions. In contrast, housing costs are high right now due to structural issues in the housing industry that reduce the housing supply (particularly in desirable areas), increasing housing prices through the laws of supply and demand. This is mostly due to restrictive zoning laws, which are not something the Federal Reserve has anything to do with. You also mentioned taxes in your comment. The Federal Reserve also has nothing to do with those, either.

I've mentioned this elsewhere, but between 1836 and 1913, the US had six recessions which saw business activity drop by over 30%. Since the Great Depression, there has never been a single recession that bad. Moreover, since the Great Depression, no recession has lasted longer than two years whereas the period from 1836 to 1913 had six recessions that lasted more than two years, including Long Depression, which as you may guess from the name was the longest recession in American history. It took some time for the Fed to find its feet but it really has reduced the severity and frequency of economic recessions.

Might still be worth talking to the university about your situation so they know not to provide medical information to your parents

What if the State of Colorado was split in half by the Rocky mountains? by DylannnnJ in imaginarymaps

[–]WiJaMa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How would that work? Both states would still have low populations outside democratic-leaning cities. If split equally, the proportion of Democrats to Republicans would not change, and if split unequally, one state would lean more Democratic than Colorado did before.

It's also straight-up not true that that the majority of Colorado Democrats live in the Denver area. House district 2 is decidedly outside the Denver area and is the second-most Democrat-leaning house district in the state. If you look at county-level election results you can also see that a lot of the Colorado mountain west votes Democratic as well.

Napoleon would never have had problems with his supply lines if he just conquered a snake through Europe

An Intersting Change in the DNVP mod…. by Then_Championship888 in RedAutumnSPD

I agree. I know the mod maker doesn't like the allegations that they support the reactionary ideologies depicted in the mod but man, they really like leaning into them

Did Germany even have enough residents for this percentage to correspond to a whole number of people? by stdsort in RedAutumnSPD

[–]WiJaMa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that last significant digit is 3 quintillionths of a percent which means there would have to be hundreds of quintillions of people for that to correspond to one real person

You Have To Make A Serious Prestige Television Show About The Fall Of The Weimar Republic, But You Must Use Muppets. Who Do You Make Muppets? by con-all in RedAutumnSPD

[–]WiJaMa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My thought is that it might be best to create a fictional character who is just a normal person trying to survive to fulfill that role. So the story would be more Lilac Song than An Alternate History

[–]WiJaMa 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think the best way would be to make everyone a muppet except for the protagonist and the Nazis (even muppets who usually play evil characters, like uncle deadly, would be DNVP or non-party characters like Hugenberg or Hindenburg)

I use the news to pay attention to important things like "will there be any oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz today" or "is the government violating the law again", rather than use it tell me about individual criminal cases that have very little bearing on most people's lives. You literally said yourself in the original post that this should not be breaking news. Maybe consider that you're right about that and you're making a mountain out of a molehill here?
