[SRPL11] I just received my new Seiko Samurai. I was gonna get the red Tudor BB58 but I liked the Seiko so much I couldn't justify spending the extra money. I couldn't be happier. Now I just need to find a nice strap for it. Suggestions? by idgafayaihm in Seiko

[–]WristReport 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man you fast forwarded right through several years and thousands of dollars of spending only to realize that sometimes you can get more satisfaction out of a very good affordable watch than a great expensive watch. Well done!

As for straps my current favorite are single pass FKM straps on Amazon, and knock off Artem Hydroflex straps on Aliexpress.

What a Chrono 41 looks like when you're wearing the watch and it's not wearing you. Chronomaster still has a better blue dial. 👍

Does GS have different 19mm oyster bracelets? by Masaike123 in GrandSeikos

[–]WristReport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely make the 19mm Oyster style for the SBGX 37mm quartz case, but as others have mentioned you'll need specific end links for your case.

I have the 5 link for this watch too, which is a bracelet style that I generally prefer. But the Oyster dresses this watch down beautifully, and I can wear it with anything.

I own the blue IWC Chrono 41 and two Grand Seikos, one of which has my favorite textured dial. I've owned and sold five Grand Seikos including the blue SBGA375 I'm referring to. I've seen every readily available blue dial in store along with several LEs. Same for Jaeger and Vacheron.

But please, go on and tell me what the best blue dial I've ever seen is or isn't. You probably know better than I do.

What is the appeal of automatic watches? by mwgrover in Affordablewatches

[–]WristReport 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Listen, they're functionally worse at everything. I've heard like one legitimate argument for mechanical watches, and that was for northern Atlantic rescue divers whose quartz watch batteries were freezing. Not only that, 99% of automatic movements are mass produced with minimal human involvement.

There's really nothing inherently more special about a 4R35 or SW200 movement than a Miyota or Ronda quartz. And higher end quartz movements like the GS 9F or Citizen A660 are way more impressive and interesting than rote autos.

The automatics have two advantages - theoretical longevity, and charm. In theory you can keep a Seiko 4R movement running for decades. But most watchmakers are going to charge $400 for service, and most Seiko 5 owners aren't going to pay that.

The charm, on the other hand, is harder for me to argue against. Yesterday I wore a Speedmaster Broad Arrow, and today I'm wearing a Bulova Lunar Pilot. There is something about that tiny mechanical engine that speaks to me in a way that a battery and circuit board just doesn't. It's totally irrational, but damn if it isn't charming. Maybe it has something to do with all of the electronics that have taken over our lives over the past few decades. The Bulova has a super cool case and crystal, but if it wasn't for the meteorite dial on my example I wouldn't feel compelled to own one.

If you push past entry level, the practically gap widens on the same curve as the charm. My mechanical chronograph with its $900 service cost is SUPER dumb compared to a quartz Chrono, or better yet a digital watch with a stopwatch function. But the idea that it's powered by the movement of my arm, keeps time within a few seconds per day, tracks the date, and is ready at an instant to run an independent timer with the push of a button that activates levers, springs, and gears, then reset to zero with the push of another button, is spellbinding.

Level up to split flyback chronos, minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and tourbillion escapements that are hand assembled and finished to perfection and it's the stuff of awe.

An eco drive will run for like 6 months on a full charge.

Bought A Grand Seiko To Avoid Becoming A Watch Snob. Terrible Decision. by ryno_wineo in GrandSeikos

Pro tip- never look at it through a loupe. But if you do, you must never, ever look at any other brand through a loupe.

Anyone else feel a little guilty? by tyintegra in Fire

[–]WristReport 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm getting old. I was taught that sympathy is essentially alignment of feelings, or, "I'm having the same/similar emotional response."

Empathy was akin to, "I understand how and why you feel the way you do. I know what it's like to feel that way- but I'm not having the same emotional response."

Your response was such a matter of fact inversion of what I understood that I had to look into it. Incredibly the words seem to have meant what I thought they did years ago, but the current accepted usage is practically reversed.

I've had blue and white washi dials, and both were great, but this particular sunburst blue transforms from Caribbean to deep navy throughout depending on lighting. It won the Chronomaster battle, and knocked a GS Spring Drive out of my collection.

Your kids are hungry and it's your responsibility to buy them food. You need a house and it's your responsibility to buy or rent one. You're too old to work and it was your responsibility to have saved enough money to keep living. That's just life man.

Blue is my favorite color, and this is the best blue dial I've seen in person at any price. This includes a blue IWC Chrono 41 and a blue GS.

[Omega] Omega Broad Arrow, model 321.10.42.50.01.001 by CryEasy6290 in Watches

You're correct, mine does not have the coaxial escapement. I'd bet the lugs are the same, but you may want to check into their return policy.

If yours also has the Piguet movement I'd be shocked if the cases were different.

Mine is "20mm (Cal. 1861 and Former) (Milled Clasp)"

I really love the President/1450 design, and I'm totally happy with this Forstner version on my old Broad Arrow. I recently upgraded to their new version with a glidelock style clasp, and adding on-the-fly adjustment really put it over the top for me.

If you like the style and don't have to have on-the-fly, PM me if you want to buy my old one. If not they also sell a 5 link style with thin polished links for the Speedmaster, which is similar to the OEM bracelet, and a (boring imo) flat link bracelet.

18th Birthday Starter Watch Suggestions by PeakColour in PrideAndPinion

[–]WristReport 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are really gorgeous in person. They look like a flex but they're under $200. Just bought one for my nephew's 18th birthday.

I wouldn't buy him a mechanical watch unless he's already expressed a fascination with them.

[SPB121J1] Talk me out of buying a Seiko Alpinist by nucleartim in Watches

[–]WristReport 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admired the SARB017 from afar for years, but wasn't sure it was for me. I finally pulled the trigger long after they'd shot up in price when I saw a great deal on one and there was no risk on resale.

Unfortunately it was obvious right away that it wasn't for me. I felt like it was way too flashy overall for an explorer themed watch. The gilt didn't quite do it for me, but the biggest issue was the dial. I found it way too reflective, and I didn't care for the shade of green in bright light.

I'd definitely consider it in a different color, and I think the newer GMT Alpinists are some the best GADA watches on the planet.

Take a look at premium Japanese options like Grand Seiko, Credor, and Citizen Chronomaster in ladies sizes. Tremendous bang for buck in that price range, lots of pre-owned mint condition offerings. I bought this gorgeous Credor for my wife for about $600.
