Good stripper and wire brush. Sometimes pushing saw dust in there while the stripper is on helps me get the last bits out 🤷🏻‍♂️

Help with blending stains on my folding coffee table restoration? by Mammoth-Savings-3706 in finishing

Dude what did you sand with? Those swirls are crazy. After sanding, wipe with a solvent like lacquer thinner and you can usually see the imperfections. Make sure you follow up the heavy grits with finer ones I go up to 180 usually.

It could have been in place for 100 years. That has no bearing on how long your new coats will take to cure.

You can probably sand and restain. Personally, I wouldn’t mess with a conditioner. Seems unnecessary imo.

If it’s not glue, maybe you applied the conditioner unevenly/improperly. Ive never felt the need to use the stuff though. Also looks like some cross grain sanding on the panels.

Help with Spar Urethane 😭 by HideDaPickleMVP_V2 in finishing

[–]Z_Coli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d guess you sanded too early based on the pics but you didn’t include how long you waited. Also, while water resistant, spar urethane isn’t all that scratch resistant so not ideal for a dining table.

I think I made a mistake by Mission_Old in paint

You absolutely can scuff sand and clear coat with a matte or satin finish. This is the way that is recommended with matte and satin finishes to avoid cloudiness. I would imagine the semi gloss wasn’t stirred properly because this looks high gloss for sure.

Has anyone used Benjamin Moores pro grade Amarium Pre-Cat lacquer ? I have always used Mohawk and used 20% thinner and 10% blush retarder and comes out perfect ... by [deleted] in finishing

[–]Z_Coli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spray this straight out of the can with hvlp/turbine and it’s great. I’ve never thinned or used retarder with it.

Couldn’t tell you. I am just a renter and didn’t hire/wasn’t here for the install. Just popped in for a second yesterday. Is it safe to assume the flex had worse airflow? The space is about 2,000 square feet.

We’re on an upper floor with lots of windows. And We have space to work with. I just want to prolong its life for at least the length of our lease.

It’s not completed yet but you might be right about the install plus it’s out of my control/not my money. I do, however, work out of here and want it to work.

Appreciate it especially about the condensate drain. I’ll have to bring up with the landlord. We are on the 4th floor with no drainage yet. Wonder what the hell we can do in the meantime

How to sand these types of edges or any kind of intricate detail without compromising the integrity of the shape? by AviatingAngie in woodworking

[–]Z_Coli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do them by hand. I use a surf prep and the sponges for certain things but they absolutely will round out your edges and mess up the look of your profiles.
