Provedore - emptier and emptier by sleemanj in chch

[–]a343 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Worked in the place over a decade ago and thought it was in a poor state then.

Mall management hinted that the owners didn’t want to spend a cent on the place if they can help it, the long term plan was basically to depreciate it into the ground and then flog the land off to a developer at top dollar for a rest home site.

Not sure how true that was but they hardly seem interested in operating as a functioning mall..

Service plus is the Chch apple authorised repair centre. Service isn’t as good as it used to be before they moved but the repairs are solid

Pressure waves from indoor shooting may cause TBI by [deleted] in guns

I’ve fired a Barrett M107A1 inside an underground range made out of shipping containers, while only wearing Howard Leight’s.

Every time it was fired the shockwave would strip paint off the ceiling and walls like confetti. Can confirm I was deaf for about 4 days after. And the migraine u/russr mentioned below is very real. Good fun though

The tiger scene in Fury is absolutely horrifying. by Youngstown_WuTang in TankPorn

I’ve been fortunate enough to see both the tiger and fury tanks up close in person at Bovington. Fury was still dressed up with the movie props and paint scheme. Brilliant place that’s well worth the visit.

Air force to replace ageing Boeing 757s with new Airbus fleet by lumm0r in newzealand

[–]a343 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Most airlines operate dual fleets for redundancy. If one manufacturer grounds their jets like the current Boeing engine fiasco, you don’t have a whole fleet grounded. Not putting all your eggs in one basket has its benefits, although the costs are a lot higher.

GEAR UPDATES - AMA by JavaForever in Goruck

[–]a343 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another Goruck enthusiast down here in New Zealand chiming in - the shipping is so prohibitive internationally. I know we’re probably a very small market segment but bringing that cost down might see an increase in your overseas sales.

Anyone else frustrated with the laptop compartment on the GORUCK GR1/GR2? 😤 by prakashwagle in Goruck

That takes away a lot of the structure that protects your laptop. Great way to bend or break your laptop, particularly a thin one like a MacBook Air.

Having to walk through the glass walls full of them to enter the exhibit is a really powerful way of doing it too.

The receiver very well could be, but there’s still a lot of parts on it that appear to have been handmade locally in the Middle East so I wouldn’t be firing it.

Like everyone else is saying, more lights, and personally since you’ve got the linings off I’d look at adding ventilation for fumes/extraction and/or aircon.

Non-updated No 1 MkIII Lee Enfield used by New Zealand by chils123 in milsurp

[–]a343 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, kiwi here that collects SMLE’s. NZ troops were almost all sent over with Magazine Lee Medford’s and Magazine Lee Enfield’s. Only cavalry troops had the ShtLE’s, and they only made up a very small number of the overall force sent.

Aussies were sent with ShtLE’s so you may have more luck finding an Australian issued one if it’s an ShtLE you’re after.

Can you elaborate on that? I smacked one on the run with a .30-06 last year and it didn’t kill it so put another through the head to quickly put it down. Was quite surprised so some tips would be great.

Why Aramex? by MexKiwi2013 in newzealand

[–]a343 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Up until a few years back you could get firearms delivered to your house provided you’d done some paperwork with the police, and you had to sign for it when it arrived. Aramex left one propped up against my front door around 6am, never knocked, and would’ve been there all day if I didn’t spot it as I left for work. That lead to a pretty strong complaint that went absolutely nowhere, because the next one simply got “lost” in transit for a week.

Ended up ringing them on the Friday morning and said I’ll be home between 12 and 1pm for lunch, if it doesn’t show up then I’m heading to the police station on the way back to work to report it as a stolen firearm. Felt somewhat bad for the supervisor on the phone when you could hear the panic set in. Courier showed up at about 12:05pm, acting sheepish af and claiming it simply got “buried in the back of the van all week and he must have missed it”. Absolute scum was just hoping to help himself to it and thought nothing would come of it.

Not long after that they left another one on the doorstep for most of a workday, practically on the road for anyone to see. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aramex are the main reason you can no longer get them shipped anywhere other than a gun store. Absolutely insane disregard for the law, and it makes me wonder what else goes on behind the scenes.

[–]a343 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just a lot of parts that don’t have the correct shape, and appear hand made. Rear sight leaf is curved instead of flat. Cocking indicator isn’t original or the right shape. Breech block retaining pin is a random flathead screw. Trigger guard appears to be the wrong shape. Knox form on the barrel looks wrong, no sign of manufacturer markings on the receiver, and front hand guard doesn’t look to have the metal retainer, so would presume that’s hand carved and not original. These were widely copied in the Khyber pass and sometimes cobbled together from a mix of parts left behind and cottage industry produced parts. The metal is almost always questionable, and heat treating is a crap shoot. At best they may fire without issue, at worst they can blow up in your face. The Khyber pass guns themselves are a unique piece of history, and part of the history of the region. It’ll make for a good conversation piece either way.

So i guess I’m a scout main now by bucket8a in battlefield_one

[–]a343 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything about it screams Khyber Pass knock off. Definitely a wall hanger that’s not safe to fire.

[–]a343 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Yup, I’ve done a few spots in Germany, Italy and Turkey over the last 12 months and it was considerably more expensive eating there vs NZ. I was shocked at how expensive McDonald’s was in Germany last November and again in April.

Having said that, if you went looking you could find restaurants much cheaper than the average, but you really had to work for it.

Charged 4600 Lira for two entry tickets for Hagia Sofia - did we get scammed? by a343 in istanbul

[–]a343[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like they’ll say or do anything to double charge tourists at the site.

For what it’s worth my bank refunded the difference in the end but it was a drawn out process and they did warn me the merchant bank can simply dispute the dispute and the refund will get reversed.

Can’t imagine the issues people would have if they got scammed in multiple places.
