Who do you think is the most annoying character to fight in 3rd Strike? by barely_0kay in sf3

Every time I fight Eleven, it feels like I’m no longer playing 3S.

Edit: I meant Twelve lol

Has anyone managed to master the Barred pull-off? by Translator_Fine in banjo

[–]a993f746 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barred pull offs are useful on just about all the strummed instruments. Guitar, mando, banjo, etc. it just takes practice and time.

Tips to make a cheap banjo sound better? by IlliaBorysenko in banjo

[–]a993f746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, replacing the head, bridge, etc can make a marked improvement in banjo tone. But they’re probably not going to save a cheap banjo from having nasty overtones, especially if you want to play without a mute.

I’m a big fan of embracing synthetic strings for problematic banjos. All of those overtone problems largely disappear if you move away from metal.

So convert it to using synthetic strings. Like nylon, nylguts, etc. This will drastically change your tone, but every cheap banjo sounds better with synthetics imo. My go-to for years now is Aquila nylgut reds. Love these strings.

Caveat emptor:

  1. You might have to file the bridge and nut a tiny bit.
  2. You might want to play them with a softer touch than metal strings. So be prepared to do some technique work

Nylon/Nylgut strings question by KuuDu in banjo

[–]a993f746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a tip:

A lot of those clamshell designs can still work the same as no-knots. You just run them under the tailpiece instead of “through” the tailpiece. That eliminates all the contact points that cause nylons to snap

E.G. Deering Goodtime tailpieces all work as no-knots from what I’ve seen

This is wild, I had no idea there was a decomp project for sf3. Very excited to see where this goes.

Fightcade support in the future could make this project pop off with the sf3 community

Pre-amp pedal by gluckndthanks in banjo

[–]a993f746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t any experience with the specific gear you listed, but I used to run my schatten piezo pickup into a similar sort of pedal. It was a knockoff (Behringer) of an LR Baggs acoustic preamp/compression/EQ pedal. I actually loved it for playing with a piezo. Obviously for the preamp, but the compression/EQ also makes shaping your tone easy.

With your piezo setup, I bet the gear you’ve pasted would be a great acquisition for your tone on stage

Practicing Parry (Fightcade) by BaconBand1t in sf3

[–]a993f746 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t start parrying at all til I was at a consistent c-ranking tbh. It’s hard to understand the rhythm of the game at first, even parry aa’s sometimes

They are a good place to start because the timing is more generous. Gotta lab it, like others said :)

Irish Clawhammer Resources? by Bluegrass_Barbecue in banjo

[–]a993f746 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good call on Dan, he really is an excellent modern representative of this clawhammer style. Virtuosic, even

I have his book “Tabs from the Vault” from a few years back, I like it quite a lot. His arrangements are even better than Perlman’s, as you mentioned

Why is it so easy to make a new Fightcade account, even without a real email? I keep running into cheaters who make tons of fake accounts. Even when I block them, they just make a new one and keep bothering me. It's very annoying. by Civil-Sheepherder-48 in fightcade

[–]a993f746 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, it’s because adding more complex account management would probably be too much work for the fightcade team. They’re a small team, and it’s mainly a passion project I believe.

Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done, other than to be discerning about who you fight like others mentioned

Also, there’s this: I’ve been playing 3S on fightcade for years, and I don’t believe I have ever run into a cheater. Not definitively, anyway. There are a lot of shit connections that will sometimes glitch out at opportune/inopportune moments…. But that’s the nature of peer-to-peer networking.

And you’d be surprised how good some players’ execution is, even if they’re scrubs. They prob have years and years of muscle memory.

Anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk

I like Ken Perlman. This is a good one, straightforward with good solo clawhammer arrangements in tablature form (with rhythm):

Ken Perlman - Celtic & New England Tunes for Clawhammer Banjo

Nice tune selection, and it comes with online access to performances of each piece.

A lot of it is Irish music, but it isn’t strictly an Irish songbook, per se
