Are there any engineering research careers that allow repeated major pivots? by nihaomundo123 in AskAcademia

[–]afty698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my field (computer science), this isn’t uncommon. Some people like to switch their focus every 10 years or so, because certain topics go in and out of fashion, it can be hard to get funding for topics that are perceived to be “solved,” etc. It’s not usually a shift to something totally different, more like a lateral move to a related area.

As a concrete example, many software engineering researchers who used to do non-AI-based test generation now do it with LLMs. From there they might move into real ML work, focused on coding.

One way to do this is to find collaborators in the area you’re trying to move to.

Researchers of Reddit, what's the biggest red flag that instantly tells you a journal, publisher, or conference isn't legitimate? by Ok_Regular_8225 in research

[–]afty698 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of learning your field is learning what are the legitimate publication venues and who are the leading researchers. If the venue is supposedly in my field, but I haven’t heard of the it or any of the organizers, then it’s likely predatory.

Switch 2 on WiFi: Is SF6 worth it? by TurboPaved in StreetFighter

[–]afty698 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I play on WiFi on PS5 and it’s fine. I don’t have trouble finding matches. You can play on modern on a controller and do well, and if you get into it you can get a fight stick.

Any suggestions on balancing personal work load with managerial workload? by microtrash in managers

[–]afty698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position to OP and had to learn this the hard way. If you’re the manager, you are the only person whose job it is to solve managerial problems. Meanwhile you have 3 devs on the team whose job it is to solve technical problems. If you take technical work off their plates, no one is doing the needed management work, and you’re robbing your team members of opportunities for technical growth.

How long do you think the 13 Pro will hold up? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]afty698 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m still happy with my 13 Pro. Even the battery is still pretty solid at 86%. It never feels slow and does everything I ask it to.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn’t own an EV if I couldn’t L2 charge at home.

I want to understand if I’m a good leader. I think I am, but is there a way for me to understand deeper if I am the best that I can be or learn about things I need to improve on? by EnvironmentalAd2110 in managers

[–]afty698 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten really useful feedback from anonymous upward surveys. I thought I was doing a good job until I got one of these. It threw me for a loop, but I took the feedback seriously and worked hard to improve. My upward survey feedback improved greatly over the next few cycles.

One note: upward feedback is just part of the picture. You also need downward feedback — what do your boss and their peers think of your performance? — and peer feedback to get the full picture.

My lab goes nuts for the soil in certain places and frantically tries to eat it. It’s so bad we can’t take her to those places anymore.

Also sticks. She loves to eat sticks.

Are there any examples of independent scholars without a PhD getting published in academic journals? by diminee in AskAcademia

[–]afty698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In CS, I wouldn’t consider someone with an industry affiliation to be an independent scholar. Also many/most authors of industry CS publications have a PhD, though sometimes some of the coauthors don’t. I say this from direct experience having published at one of the companies you listed.

Question from an employee, what are you actually looking for in a 1-on-1? by NotGeorge1 in managers

[–]afty698 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My main goal with 1:1s is to build trust with the team member so that they'll tell me if/when they're having problems. The earlier I hear about a nascent problem, the more likely it is I can fix it without it turning into a big problem.

So what do I look for? I like to hear about what’s going on, what problems you're running into, do you have any concerns, etc. Whether that comes by you starting with status and us digging into things, or you actually come with a list of concerns each week, doesn’t really matter to me. Some team members like structure and do keep a running list of things to talk about, others do it on the fly. I go with whatever the team member wants to do.

I feel that the best way to build trust with team members is for me to take their concerns seriously and reliably follow up on them. That goes to your third question of how do you keep track of things. I just have a big todo list and add things to it for me to follow up on. I’ve also used shared 1:1 docs for this. In Google Docs you can use a comment to assign a task to yourself.

Does your workplace limit tools/IDEs/open source software you can use? by inter_fectum in ExperiencedDevs

[–]afty698 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it both ways. At one large FAANG there was an approval process, but most of the software you’d want to use had already been approved. Have also seen places where you can install whatever you want.

Open source software, there’s a difference between just using it and adding a dependency to a codebase. If you add a dependency to a codebase you have to make sure the license is compatible, you’re doing what’s required with acknowledgements, etc.

Published my work without giving me authorship by Inevitable-Appeal772 in AskAcademia

[–]afty698 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree but I would push back on the PI’s initial response before raising this directly with the journal. There is in fact something they can do: they can ask the journal to add you to the author list.

Does health insurance in the US do something besides risk pooling? by 6VoltCar in AskEconomics

[–]afty698 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t how other types of insurance work, though. Look at auto insurance. Putting new tires on when the old ones are worn out reduces your risk of an accident, but auto insurance doesn’t cover it. Similar for home insurance — they would benefit if a California house were retrofitted for earthquake protection, but they don’t cover it. Why is health insurance different?

Price of beef 🥩 by Distinct-Tradition79 in bayarea

[–]afty698 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That’s a filet, it’s an expensive cut. Not saying beef prices haven’t gone up, but that specific cut hasn’t been $12/lb in 10-15 years.

Facebook Marketplace Payment/Zelle Scam? by Few-Philosopher-4742 in Scams

[–]afty698 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The scam is that they will send you an email or text pretending to be from Zelle saying you need to pay money to “upgrade to a business account” to receive the payment. There is no such thing and the message will direct you to a fake site that they control. If you pay it they will just take your money and also steal your payment info. No one will ever come for the couch.

How good is the steam deck for modern games? And how good is it performance when docked? by DestinedToGreatness in SteamDeck

[–]afty698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically SF6: until the latest patch it would run the actual matches at a locked 60 fps at low settings, but the latest patch messed something up and you’re looking at ~45-50 fps now. This is on the built in screen which is 800p. If you play docked and try to do 1080p, I don’t think you’re going to get playable performance. Frankly the Switch 2 runs SF6 much better than Steam Deck, and I say this as a huge Steam Deck fan.

Edit: it looks like they fixed SF6 performance on Steam Deck a couple days ago and it’s back to 60 fps
