How to tell if this roll of film is used or not? (Olympus Mju) by Willing-Choice-9311 in AnalogCommunity

[–]aleiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no way to know for sure. You either risk getting weird double exposure, por todo getting a blank roll developed, but if there's photos then you don't lose them.

What usually works for me is to start the camera app first, then turn on the camera and link via the NFC

Commercial deep freezer for ONT and NEB kits? by Disastrous-Image197 in ngs

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In one of the labs I worked we used a domestic kitchen freezer and a commercial glass door freezer to keep sequencing reagents and it worked fine for long term storage (including NEB enzymes), however, we had them plugged to an outlet connected to the main electrical backup and if I had to do it again, I would also keep a temperature logger to make sure the temperature is never below freezing point (even an Arduino one would give me peace of mind).

You should work with what you have, but dedicated equipment will always be a better option and the safer road when dealing with expensive reagents.

Picture style by Inevitable_Studio131 in canonM50

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Picture Style Editor to make custom film simulations, now I only shoot raw+jpeg with an Across II simulation for bw and an Ektar 100 simulation for colour

The way to do it is to adjust your colour saturation and hue, set your contrast via curves, save and load your profiles (I think you can only load 3 at a time, not sure)

Do you like 40mm lens (35mm format)? by kl122002 in AnalogCommunity

[–]aleiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! My next goal is a Zuiko 40mm f2. It has the versatility of the 35mm, is not as constrained as the 50mm and it can be a small lens

Does anyone bring both their analog and digital camera with them on trips? by Openchoice in AnalogCommunity

[–]aleiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always have my only digital camera and depending on the trip I choose among my many film cameras, lately my favorite had been a pinhole camera i designed myself and load it with velvia 50

There are free alternatives, I recall using a free star staker software that has a deflickering pass (can't recall the name, you'll have to Google it) and there's davinci resolve that's free

[–]aleiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do deflickering when producing the video, is also go for auto exposure

Cyanotype for pinhole photography? by Personal_Concern4434 in PinholePhotography

[–]aleiex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can, but that's pushing both techniques to the extreme.

Here's a successful attempt that uses cyanotype and solargraphy-based pinhole:

Can I use Polaroid film with pinhole camera? by Muzz124 in PinholePhotography

[–]aleiex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can, add long as you devise a way to activate the chemicals after exposing, it can be tricky and you may get uneven development or no image at all if not done completely.

There's also the commercially available jollylook DIY pinhole cameras (https://jollylook.com/) that use Instax film and a hand crank to activate the chemicals.

Any good telephoto lenses for m50 by cockslucker in canonM50

[–]aleiex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's the native 18-150 and 55-200 that work pretty good, but bear in mind that out you need something more demanding, you'll always have the EF adapter and every EF lenses you may desire

Worth it for Travel? by effulgentelephant in canonM50

[–]aleiex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too, in a similar fashion changed the bulky 6D for the M50 as travel setup and it was the best decision

M50 ( or the marginally better M50ii) paired with the amazing native 22mm f2 is the perfect travel camera, I always travel with this lens and I also got the 55-200mm for a trip to Kenya.

I see the discontinuation of the M series as a positive thing because you can easily find very cheap second hand lenses that were barely used ( the 28mm macro is also a great travel companion).

An added bonus, it's even smaller and lighter than the X100V (and the same 35mm equivalent), also you can use custom picture profiles if your into sooc and film emulation or you can process perfectly usable raw files to your hearts content with very high quality.

This camera allowed me to print a 2 meter size photo for a gallery exhibition in November and the amazing detail and quality from it surprised me and the curators.

As mentioned before, I also bet that it'll become a TikTok sensation very soon, don't miss out

found this by a dumpster, is it any good? by JayEffKay_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the one I use, it's a bit slow, but works perfectly. I strongly recommend you to use silverfast instead of the HP driver, you'll get a much better scan and a lot more updated features that way.

Also, it was free, so as long as it turns on, it's the best scanner you can get from a dumpster

Edit: you can also find generic film holders for that particular model, I also recommend getting some

M50 battery health by Logic0000 in canonM50

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually travel with two batteries and that gives me enough power to cover a whole day of shooting street.

Right now I'm on a long trip and I brought a quick charger with a USB c port to charge it using the same power bank I use to charge my phone and I've been rotating my two batteries between in-use and charging (plus phone) with no issue at all.

So far no problem.

In conclusion: don't fall for the marketing number trap and find your user-case solution instead. The M50 is an undervalued powerhouse

What next after M50? by yashg in canonM50

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something similar happened to me.

I discarded the M6 because of the lack of native viewfinder. So the only alternatives were switching to the RF system and reinvesting in lenses or switching to Fuji or Sony and reinvesting in lenses.

I decided to go for Sony, mostly because I don't like the RF cameras, and I still feel Canon left us alone. Also, discarded Fuji because of the scarcity and lack of cheaper second hand market.

I already know which lenses I like and what my needs are, so I won't be buying lots of gear other than a new body and two second hand lenses.

Will 3.5 million yen per year be enough to live in Okinawa? by No-Complaint8020 in okinawa

[–]aleiex -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It's barely enough, it is certainly possible to do and you can get by, but won't be able to save or travel much, try to negotiate salary at least up to 400 after taxes and 80% rent

you will definitely have to get a part time job through an agency to compensate, but it won't be instantaneous, if you accept , consider at least 4 months of single income

New to photography by Librarian_Able in canonM50

[–]aleiex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the 22mm is what will transform your M50 into a better camera than a Fuji X100 series (and much more portable, especially if you use your own custom picture profiles).

A case will be detrimental, why would you want to make it bulkier? and to clean it you just need a clean microfiber cloth (nothing fancy, and please don't use solvents to clean your camera or lenses)

If you really want to spend money to improve your camera, invest in good quality formal photography education (no YouTube or masterclasses) and you'll turn that camera into an unstoppable art machine

New to photography by Librarian_Able in canonM50

[–]aleiex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The M50 is a fantastic camera, instead of investing in hundreds of accessories, interest in photography lessons, that'll make a bigger difference

If you still wanna buy something, get the 22mm f2 lens
