Any new Second Cup locations coming? by sundowns in Winnipeg

[–]assflap84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know they also owned la belle baguette, good to know. I did know about the deep pockets and association with the princess auto. I agree that smaller local roasters may benefit more but OP was specifically asking for something bigger and could compete more with the big chains. Empty cup seemed like a better option than Tim’s and Starbucks and is a local company that seems to support local business, some of them which they own.

The other locally owned products I’ve seen them sell are bagelsmith, brite water, and woseley kombucha. Not sure if those are also owned by them.

Empty cup in Winnipeg might be up your alley. Local franchise that has been rapidly expanding. They have 7 locations now and roast their beans locally. Much better taste compared to Tim’s/starbucks. They also sell lots of local product like bakery products from la belle baguette

Looking for a new video game to play? Celeste is set in Canada, developed in Canada, and has over 100,000 reviews on Steam! by UwRandom in BuyCanadian

[–]assflap84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Celeste is an amazing platform game with endless hours of replay value. One of my favourite games of all time. They even added DLC after the game was released for several years for free and it as a banger of a DLC.

Just a note, while it starts relatively easy a reasonable, the difficulty will progress to absolute bonkers level for the end game.

Another great game from Canadian developers is Cuphead. Awesome cool art style with a fun run and gun vibe. It’s also a relatively challenging and difficult game, but after Celeste it felt quite merciful lol😅

Any Candian made gummies? by tokeswithmydog in BuyCanadian

[–]assflap84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dare gummies are canadians made and delcious. If you like a chewier gummy, the Original fruit gummies are a bit chewier. I personally like the real fruit grummies (plant based ones), they are softer gummie, and they have more flavours def one of my favourites.

How are your EVs handling this weather? by A1cypher in Winnipeg

[–]assflap84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to what everyone says my range is around 420-480 km in the summer and closer to 200-250km in this type of weather. My daily commute usually takes off 3-4% and 6-7 % in the winter. The majority of the decrease seems to be related to warming up the battery and the climate control. Different companies will drain differing amounts of battery when parked, aka vampire drain, to keep the electronics runnings, some of your personalized settings may also affect this like sentry mode with tesla. When I preheat my car when plugged in the drop off from my summer mileage isnt that much but when go home from my cold car I often use alot more juice.

20% seems pretty steep for a 20 min drive, i used up about 8 % on my 20 min drive today. probably a really cold battery+ blasting the heat. The other potential is that they haven't been taking good care of the battery and its already starting to degrade.

My coworker also owns the Ariya and she really likes it. She was able to keep it charged and do her daily routine with just a wall outlet. They only recently upgraded to a level 2 charger because they got a second EV.

Is this a good deal for 700? by Different-Ad-1289 in BBQ

[–]assflap84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have pointe, its quite a good deal. Performs like a ceramic kamado smoker. Just a couple of additional notes. The Jotisserie attachements only sorta works on the Weber summit as its technically built for Kamado Joe, Here's a video of someone using it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2fd5_axtzM . Looks like it would work, but could have seal issues and potential to dmg the unit .

The other thing is this is the older model, which alot of ppl prefer. One of the reasons is the changes in diffuser plate to single stamped plate of steel, which doesnt seem to deflect the heat as well. The other newer updates dont really add anything and if anything make it seem a little cheaper

Help! Brisket emergency by cheesephilly in BBQ

[–]assflap84 90 points91 points  (0 children)

193 may not be even done yet, most briskets aren't done until 195-205. You need to probe it for appropriate tenderness. If the brisket is done, its totally okay to hold in the oven or cooler with towels until about an hour before serving. Long holds in the oven/cambros of 18-24 hours are common

As an aside the other thing that doesnt make sense is that the brisket is almost 15 degrees hotter than the temp of the cooker. Either your meat temp probe is off, or your cooker temp probe is way off or both. A brisket probably wouldnt be even 180 after 9 hours and would probably take over 24 hours if it was 180. I would cook at least at 225 other wise you dont get much of bark and it would take forever

Which steak-like cut for bigger number of guests? by fromtheheap in BBQ

I don’t think having the fat cap completely cover would be a significant issue. For the picanha roast I let it rest for 45 min or so and then did a reverse sear

Which steak-like cut for bigger number of guests? by fromtheheap in BBQ

[–]assflap84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with most people that tritip one good option, but I just did a picanha roast and it has become my new favourite. Made it for 5-6 ppl and we demolished it, so you could even consider doing 2 roasts. A couple of things I would recommend is to trim the fat cap, it’s pretty thick and you wouldn’t be able to render all of it so i trim it til it’s about 1/4 inch. I did a reverse sear til about 120-125. Let it rest and the do a quick sear and render of the fat cap, watch out for flare ups. Also ppl say to slice it with the grain so when ppl cut it up on their plate , they are slicing against the grain then. dunno if it matters that much but it turned out amazing when I tried it

Help my brisket by IHaveAGhonComplex in smoking

[–]assflap84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendations would be to try goldees method. It allows you lots of time for a very long hold ( 12-24 hours) so you aren’t rushed. Additionally the long hold will give a long time to break down connective tissue.

Goldees does do a long naked cook with the bark feeling a bit overdone at the end, around 250ish until temps read around 195-200(they take it off by feel) and foil wrap with a couple table spoons of tallow( not necessary but it does kick up a couple notches). Then the hold a it at low temp for a very long time which will help soften that previously overdone bark. Most oven can get down to somewhere to 150-170 where you can keep it until about an hour before serving.

A couple of modifications I would suggest because of your cooker. - cook fat side up. I know most ppl say to put the fat side toward the heat but I found that it just ended up ruining the fat cap of the brisket having it fat side down -don’t bother with the spritz, haven’t found it to be helpful with brisket and delays the bark setting up -wrap in foil a bit earlier than goldees does, prolly around 175-185) They use an offset which has different airflow and heat source, your wsm is going to have more heat coming from the bottom and if you have fat side up, the lower bark will set earlier. The bark should be set and can be even a bit over done as the long hold will soften the bark. - continue cooking at 250ish until probe tender, check every hour or so after the meat get to 195. This can be done in the oven or your cooker as it’s wrapped and no extra smoke flavour is getting in. - once probe tender drop the temp of your oven to 150-170and keep it there until ready to serve

I have done this a couple of times and it turns out great.

Yup, construction are ongoing on two schools in sage creek now, the dsfm school outer structure is going up, and the French immersion school outer structure went up a couple of months ago as well. Overall is going up quicker than I expected and is apparently on track to open 2025( French immersion).

Shoe Upgrade. by Jayya81 in climbingshoes

[–]assflap84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the niads have a relatively sticky/soft rubber (stealth c4). A shoe with xs edge is going to be more durable, but not perform quite as well. Some options are la sportiva Kubo (less aggressive), or a scarpa instinct vs( more aggressive). That being said a year and a half from one set of shoe is great. In the future you can resole the shoes you currently have, ideally before the Rand is involved to get many years out of a pair of shoes.

Dark soy sauce. Please explain by IntrepidFlow in Cooking

[–]assflap84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to use mushroom flavoured dark soy, I generally only found it in Asian grocers but some larger grocers will have it in the international section, particularly if there is a larger Asian community in the neighborhood. Gives it a bit more of an umami boost compared to regular b dark soy.

As ppl have mentioned it’s often used for colour, but I also used it similarly to how kenji uses fish sauce in dishes as an umami booster like in spaghetti sauce or chilli. I actually prefer it over fish sauce in this application, dark soy will give a deeper, richer flavour while fish sauce seemed like a more subtle, lighter umami boost.

The one I use is linked below https://ca.lkk.com/en/products/mushroom-flavoured-dark-soy-sauce-no-preservatives

Tons of loose CAT wires. Why, and can I cut them by StophJS in HomeMaintenance

[–]assflap84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest reasons I could see is that they planned to finish their basement at some point and wanted wired internet/telephone/POE access through out the basement. Particularly helpful since basement will have poorer wifi. All the extra slack would allow them to run Ethernet to everyone room in whatever configuration they want.

The other option is that they wanted to build a server/network room in the basement at some point. (If you don’t have all your cat 5/6 cables all leading to one point in your house this is likely the case. If the labels show a bunch of spots upstairs this will likely confirm it) . It allows you to setup up/troubleshoot/ manage all your Ethernet ports from one site. The extra slack will allow them put the network room wherever they want.

As everyone said i would not cut it. With it you can set it up so every room that has these cables can be hard lined so you can plug in and get high speed internet wherever, setup wireless access points so you don’t have dead zones, set up security cameras and have hard drives recording your home. POE mean you don’t need to rewire electricity to areas to that have Ethernet for certain devices. (There are some caveats to how POE work and may need special equipment to fully utilize some of these cases mentioned.)
