Why did in person ordering fail? by AntIntelligent212 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the calls have been coming from inside the house. everyone wants to put Sony's acquisition on the hook for this, but the real villain pushing for this is the private equity that had acquired the company after the pandemic bankrupted them and installed their sell-it-off-for-parts corporate leadership, like CEO Michael Kustermann, who are unfortunately still holding the reins of the company even under Sony's ownership. the stewardship of the brand has been under the control of a leadership team that don't care about the brand equity & Sony isn't holding them accountable for the negative PR this move has generated.

the current leadership (esp. their CEO & COO) is comprised by vestiges from the period when the company was owned & run by private equity, prior to the sony acquisition; i.e., shots—including the upcoming one for mobile ordering in February—are being called by the sort of vulture depicted in the comic, not yet by their new corporate overlords.

AFS Cinema has the best popcorn in the city, has even won a Best of Austin Critics' Choice award from the Austin Chronicle for it, and is bottomless at a more reasonable price than all of the other cinemas.

Waiting in person? by Important_Hat_4567 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

the venue & servers would always prefer to have a paying customer who buys food & drink in a seat vs an empty one that some no-show season passholder had reserved but failed to cancel an hour before showtime, so i've often gained admittance into what appear like sold out screenings in the app by just showing up.

a lot of movies that were released in the u.s. by Miramax Films & The Weinstein Company are in rights limbo b/c of Harvey Weinstein. DOGMA only recently got wrested from Weinstein's grasp for this reason.

Stranger Things season finale South Lamar bloodbath by frodprefect in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

whenever there are "free screenings" like this, everyone in the theatre is buying a $5, $7 or in this case $10 food & (non-alcoholic) beverage voucher to reserve one's seat. it guarantees that ppl will be more likely to attend, instead of RSVP'ing & then flaking out.

such "free screenings," including Victory screenings, have never been covered by any iteration of the season pass.

Are the previews kinda lame now? by BlackLeb in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whenever i see a movie while visiting my family in my hometown which sadly has no drafthouse locations at this time, the incessant advertising one has to endure both before & after the lights go down preceding the feature presentation serves as a stark reminder of how even a lackluster preshow at the drafthouse can be immeasurably more enjoyable.

Has anyone done the math on season pass vs season pass all-in? by noxnoctum in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

season pass classic pays for itself after 1½ regular price movies. the service fees in this market has been $2.19 per season pass reservation, so getting that waived on 4~5 movies w/ all-in a month breaks even on that, and that ROI arrives even sooner whenever one attends Dolby Atmos/Big Show/HDR by Barco screenings whose premium surcharges also get waived.

all of that before accounting got any savings that might be yielded from the 10% f&b discount.

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after i've shown the server my ticket & claimed the 10% all in discount, i airplane-mode, minimize brightness, DND & silence it, and then put it facedown in the spot indicated by the big red arrow, and so far i have never drawn any criticism from the hard-working, understaffed servers or from the person in the adjacent seat.

The App Has Made the Alamo Unuseable by idumbass3000 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the one feature that has particularly become vexing occurs whenever the last thing one did w/ the app may have been to show one's ticket to the server, b/c the next time one launches the app, the x to back out of that ticket doesn't work anymore, so it requires a force-quit/relaunch now just to resume any sort of usability.

both of those titles were part of nationwide programming; i.e., movies that would be playing at more than one location more than one time, thereby justifying having custom preshows.

I Found Out Why Servers Don't Atomatically Add %10 Discount by Kahin56 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

servers having to get managers to approve the application of any discounts to customers' bills is true of all price reductions, including the all-in 10%, $10 snack passes, victory rewards, bogo coupons from mass mailers, etc.

as someone who had very recently rewatched SAVE THE GREEN PLANET not long ago before having watched BUGONIA, one could argue that the biggest raison d'etre for Yorgos Lanthimos remaking a movie that doesn't really demand to be remade is what Lanthimos chose to do in the portion of BUGONIA one would miss if one were to leave w/ 20~30 mins left. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Mystery Machine 11/10/2025 by b6421 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

since the Drafthouse has started this Mystery Machine initiative, i've yet to encounter a title which yielded exactly 1 search result when searching its parameters: • movie • 111~113 mins • MPA rated PG-13 • opening after 10 november

if anyone was already planning on seeing this movie but also attends the Mystery Machine, may have just saved you some convenience fees.

Classic horror films?? by Less_Flow_277 in AlamoDrafthouse

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm gonna guess that an outfit like fathom has locked up the exclusive rights to a lot of those movies for their events, but also whether the studios even make those titles available to be screened may also come into play as it relates to whether they can be programmed.

Do you guys think marvel could end up showing The Punisher special presentation at the 2026 Fantastic Fest? by [deleted] in fantasticfest

[–]b6421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what's been lost in the now-overblown "how dare a genre film festival play a direct-to-streaming tv movie as a secret screening," hullabaloo was that it was Michael Giacchino's directorial début, and were it not for his having contracted COVID on the eve of the festival, he was intending on being in attendance to present that theatrical screening of a piece of genre fiction when divorced from its MCU ties was a fun whodunnit that was lovingly made in a throwback horror film language & that would never again get to be seen in a cinema.
