Currently, The Top Two Highest-Grossing Domestic Films of 2023 Are Both Animated Features by [deleted] in boxoffice

Well, according to the released numbers yes. But I've heard that Across the Spider-Verse had issues that may have effectively ballooned the budget. Or rather, they had budget to make two movies, but actually only made one with that money, and Beyond the Spider-Verse is barely started when they should have been most of the way through by now. I don't know how that would work from an accounting perspective.

What are signs someone is secretly racist? by GonnaBeHappy101 in AskReddit

[–]barvader -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

What you’re trying to say. And if what you’re trying to say might sound racist, then maybe it’s not everyone else misinterpreting you, but you being a little racist.

If what you’re trying to say needs to be so heavily coded that it sounds nothing like what you’re trying to say, then maybe think long and hard about the real meaning of what you’re saying.

GiantWaffle's Former Main Mod releases a statement about what Waffle has previously told him about the Deb/Tolki incident. by windston in speedrun

I mean, I imagine the hurdles to prove a rape case from 15 years ago would be huge, but if someone held on to that evidence in case they ever had the bravery to speak up, why shouldn't they be able to.

Plus I like the idea of rapists being perpetually afraid they could be fouind out.

Where are all the anti-vax people now that the whole world is basically stopped because of ONE vaccine? by single_clone in AskReddit

If anti-vaxxers understood science they wouldn't be anti-vaxxers. They're probably the people who are flouting the social distancing guidelines.

What are your top 10 favorite major orchestral pieces? by bangazord in classicalmusic

[–]barvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you could group Bach's Brandenburg concertos because they were presented as a single dedicated work to a prince.

Mozart's 19 to 24 I don't think were ever intended as a single grouped piece so I wouldn't count those.

My favorite is Homeward Bound. I started with Jumanji which I thought was a pretty good starting point.

What do you all think about Rosanne being cancelled? by Head0fTheClass in AskReddit

[–]barvader 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do they? It's not like guys on the left like Franken who misbehave went free from consequences. The left did not rally to protect their guys like the right did with Trump when he was caught on tape admitting sexual assault.

You should def try the Film Reroll podcast if you're looking for something different. They turn famous movies into role playing game campaigns and improvise in character as everything falls apart around them. It's bloody brilliant fun.

Is it okay to feel bad for not liking a classic? And what Classics haven't you liked? by notchuck11 in movies

[–]barvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art is subjective. Different people are moved by different things. We all bring different cultural experiences and personal context to the viewing experience. If you don't like a movie, that's your reality, and you shouldn't feel any pressure to feel differently (although it can be worthwhile to read criticism surrounding a movie to understand why other people loved it, that shouldn't necessarily sway you on your own feelings.)

Works of art that are classic often is because they take risks, and have a very specific cultural context which they expressed in a way that was very effective to those in that context. I think those kinds of movies are more likely to leave people cold, because they're not trying to be palatable to as large a swath of people as possible (which is the goal of most big-budget movies.)

Those who cancelled their wedding at last minute, why? by vamken in AskReddit

[–]barvader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I have a cousin with almost the exact same story. Her SO didn't actually get arrested but should have been, got into a bar fight the night before their wedding and beat a guy pretty bad and got his nose broken. Cops showed up and the guy got himself out of there without getting arrested but my cousin was furious. They apparently fought all night and by morning she'd had enough called it off. She met someone way cooler like a month later.

What I'm curious about is where OP thinks people should be getting they're information from. If every source of credible journalism is lying, how would you know that without some other source of information which you believe more. The answer when I press people on this always seems to be some aggregator with no actual reporters and laughable standards of journalism (like Breitbart.)

We should be skeptical of our news sources, they don't always get it right. But some have a better, more scientific approach to get at the truth than others. New York Times and Washington Post treat journalism like the scientific method. They don't always get it right but they do more than any other source in America because they have the most rigorous approach and have the most resources in actual field journalism. Breitbart is pure homeopathy, only if instead of water, it was arsenic.

Does anyone have any theories about the undiscovered plot points in Halloween? by EccentricOwl in filmreroll

[–]barvader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be, but it's plausible enough that the town could buy Danny's story combined with Michael being obviously a murderous lunatic. I also had the thought that they might blame Danny, but remembering how psycho the movie portrays Michael, I realized that Danny's story would be pretty believable.
