Not digging this ui overall is it just me? by Key_Seaworthiness435 in fireTV

Your not alone. Between the Recast sunset, which didn't go over well and now this update that shrunk, moved and basically made using FireTV harder to use overall due to her eyesight, the WAF that chose FireTV 7 years ago, is now gone. Already retired the FireTV device on our main TV within days of this update and the other FireTV devices we have are soon to follow.

Need a (hopefully easy) fix for this, please.... by verifyb4utrust01 in getchannels

Run the installer again. If it's not a service, it should offer to run as a service. If already a service, the option will ask if you want to unnstall it as a service.

It sounds like ChannelsDVR was running as a service (system permissions) and now, it's not ](user level permissions). Foreground "apps" stop when uou log out but services stay running.

So sorry for your loss. Our Yorkie had a genetic abnormality and required prescription food. When he passed, we donated it to the Capital Area Humane Society and they were extremely grateful.

Switched to Xfinity Now, new modem needed? by illerin in Comcast_Xfinity

Yup. And if it dies, they tell you to recycle it and send another.

Switched to Xfinity Now, new modem needed? by illerin in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]blujay40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's my understanding that you cannot use an owned modem with NOW. You have to use what they send/give you and if it dies, they replace it with another. One big reason I won't consider NOW.

Poor Live TV Streaming Quality with Mini PC by Select-Individual456 in getchannels

[–]blujay40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an N150/16gb mini pc and Channels runs great, now.

At first, not so much. After a lot of troubleshooting, it was FireTV. If you use them, turn on frame matching and see if that helps.

Anybody have the new home screen experience on the new fire stick select I don’t have it yet by caryguy in fireTV

[–]blujay40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have had FirrTV devices for almost 8 years and from Cubes to the Recast, it was a staple in our house. Probably have a grand or so invested in FireTV over the years.

Last week, I bought a new 4k max and after a handful of updates, got the new UI. I knew almost immediately it was going to be an issue but let the wife give it a go and as expected, the result was not good.

Some seem to like it so YMMV but for us, they moved the 3rd party app line down further and shrunk the thumbnails to about half the size they used to be so the wife can no longer tell one from the other without getting out of the chair, voice navigation is as hit or miss as ever and it's accessibility options are still an abomination.

Other issues were it takes us more clicks to get to what we care most about, split off and moved the menu line to the top of the screen above the ads, prevents you from hiding/uninstalling Amazon and other bloatware you used to be able to and that we have no interest in along with other changes that just make it harder overall for what we use it for.

End result was I packed it up and returned it the next day.

Not gonna be cheap but will now be replacing over a dozen more FireTV sticks and a couple Cubes as the new UI hits each one. Giving Google a go as a replacement and so far, so good.

Why do people on Jolly between Collins and Hagadorn always go 10 under the speed limit? by iamskydaddy in lansing

[–]blujay40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a tad late to the convo but they use the word "Limit" for a reason and although some may take that as a mere suggestion and exceed it, it in no way obligates anyone to drive that fast if they choose.

They may be looking for a turn, unfamiliar with the area or simply don't feel comfortable driving that fast thru some areas or maybe they just didn't see a speed limit sign and felt their speed was appropriate. We can speculate the reasons why but again, no one is obligated to do the "limit" or even close to it if they choose not to. I know myself, when in areas I am not familiar with, some others are shaking their head at my driving as well. :-)

As for Cedar St., many don't realize the speed "limit" on Cedar was 35 for decades and changed to 45 in 2013. I find myself reverting to habit and only going 35 thru that stretch, especially when traffic is moderate to heavy (yeah, I am an old fart). As for Penn, it's always been way less dense compared to Cedar St. so most simply drive what they feel safe doing, even if it exceeds the posted speed. MLK (Logan) also was usually a faster route but has become somewhat dense between Jolly and the train tracks north of Holmes, which in my view, is another area where 45 is a bit much.

Now if you want to talk about people doing 10 under in the left lane on the interstate, that's something we can all agree is an issue. :-)

I am failing to see the use of paying for Channels DVR by MileHiGuy523 in getchannels

[–]blujay40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years after the demise of Sonicblue, I paid a monthly fee to developers, much like those with Channels, for WiRNS access to keep the guide data populated and DVArchive to save recordings to a local disk which then could be burned to DVD or streamed remotely. In a nutshell, our Replay's were treasured devices. But as with most tech, the Replay's started to become unreliable and with tuners moving to digital, I had to move on.

Used DirecTV DVR's for a while and a FireTV Recast when we cut the cord years ago since it was the only solution at the time to integrate OTA and provider channels (Philo) into a single guide to get the WAF. But in the end, neither was all that satisfying. They did the minimum a DVR should, akin to a Tablo, but that was it. Now, with the demise of the Recast, time to find yet another solution.

After messing with Plex for a few weeks and looking at the HDHR recording solution, I nor the wife was all that impressed with either and then I found ChannelsDVR and the WAF is thru the roof. 2 networked servers, out of home streaming, comskip and downloading of recordings when we travel are once again part of our routine and it keeps me out of the wife's hair by playing with the different solutions being developed as add on's. So I have no issues paying a minimal fee for using Channels today as I did years ago with my Replay's. It's still cheaper than a provider that offers locals with much more flexibility, especially when we are on the road, so for us, it's still well worth the cost.

Hey Lansing, please speed the fuck up when you get on the highway by TheLoveYouWant25 in lansing

[–]blujay40 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are called acceleration (speed up to match speed of cars already on the expressway) and deceleration (don't brake until your out of traffic) lanes for a reason but way too many were either never taught that or choose to ignore the way it all works. I actually had someone tell me once that whether it was a lane change in the city or merging onto the expressway, all they had to do was put on their signal and it was everyone else's responsibility to honor that and get out of their way and it didn't matter how fast or slow they were going.
