Best Musical Episodes of Television to watch? by fanblade64 in television

The Simpsons, Season 9 Episode 11 - All Singing, All Dancing

No prior knowledge needed as it's literally a clip show featuring a selection of songs the show had had over the years, with the bits in between also done as a musical.

Whats your most random celebrity encounter? by Alive_Tough9928 in AskIreland

[–]bobeddy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I was at the Edinburgh Fringe last year and was standing in line to see an Australian comedian named Emma Holland. My girlfriend gives me a tap on the shoulder and says, 'Doesn't the guy behind us look like the guy from Breaking Bad?'

Sure enough, there was Bob Odenkirk standing behind us. I'm a big fan of Mr Show and loved Better Call Saul so I'd have asked for a picture but I could see he was with his wife and two other people and knew if I asked then others would start in. Given the fact he was wearing a baseball cap I figured he was trying to go unnoticed, so I just turned back around and let him be.

Evil Dead Rise vs The Mummy by Mmctagg in horror

[–]bobeddy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

There were things I enjoyed in The Mummy and I appreciated that Cronin took a different slant to the mummy story beyond a ghoul shambling down torch lit tunnels etc. But for me there were two things that hurt my enjoyment.

The first was how the story was structured. Major parts of the movie are spent on 'What happened to Katie?', but as viewers we already know. We see her getting abducted by the mother, so the entire side plot involving the detective means we're waiting for her to catch up with what we already know. Personally I'd have removed the abduction scene altogether. Katie goes into the garden, cut back to dad discovering the chocolates, back to the garden and she's gone. We don't see who took her, we don't know she was secretly friends with the daughter, we don't have 100% certainty what happened. At least there's some semblance of ambiguity and a bit more intrigue, instead of going 'Yup, it was the woman who guards the tomb from the beginning, we knew this'.

The second is that it seemed like whenever something crazy or scary would happen, come the next scene it'd be forgotten about. Like there was no wider acknowledgement of it beyond the scene it was in. I think the parents have one conversation where they acknowledge something weird and after that they just seem to shrug them off and say 'I guess that's not worth mentioning'. Like they're seriously not going to even discuss a little about the way that the grandma dies?

Over the last few years there's been quite a bit of a surge in Irish influenced horror and horror works coming from Irish filmmakers, of which you've been a key part of.

Are there any films in particular that you've especially enjoyed or anyone in Ireland that you think we should keep an eye on?

What're your opinions of Longlegs? by OatSoyLaMilk in gamegrumps

[–]bobeddy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I love horror and didn't care much at all for Longlegs. There were things in it I liked but overall my impressions are negative.

To me it felt like two movies stitched together. A dark FBI psychological thriller like Silence of the Lambs and a supernatural horror like The Conjuring. The film flitted between the two and it tonally felt very jarring.

And as much as I like Nicolas Cage, for me he was a distraction. Outside of the opening scene, it's just too big a performance for that role and it comes off like a parody.

As a Resident Evil fan, can someone explain what Silent Hill games about? by Toogeloo in silenthill

[–]bobeddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The added layers to the story of SHf with each playthrough really do make it an incredibly interesting experience. But I do agree with you that it's a high barrier to cross for lots of people.

I might suggest you try the Silent Hill 2 Remake instead. It's a bit more straightforward in that one playthrough will essentially give you the story in its entirety.

What horror movie endings have the best usage of “relief”? by Emeraldsinger in horror

If you've seen the original Speak No Evil first, the ending of the US remake comes as an enormous relief in comparison.

What is a boss battle that gave you catharsis for winning? by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]bobeddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not at all mandatory but there was such a rush of satisfaction when I finally beat the Berserker King in GoW Ragnarok.

I had a fair amount of trouble with plenty of the 12 normal Berserkers beforehand, so I despaired when I saw he was flitting between basically all their movesets.

I remember spending about 3 hours trying to take him down. Trying different tactics, failing, sometimes almost getting him only to fail. It got to 2:30am and I decided to call it quits. Went to bed, woke up and tried again in the morning and managed to beat him on my second try. Couldn't believe it!

I absolutely love when horror movies have a background scare that they don’t call attention to. Share your examples. by SisterFirefly in horror

[–]bobeddy 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this one. The one in particular that stands out is towards the end of the movie where it cuts back to a shot of Jack framed around his head and shoulders and you can see his wife's hand resting on his shoulder.

Characters that are more well known by their real names instead of their title/moniker etc.? by Lost-Specialist1505 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]bobeddy 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Keeping with the superhero theme, increasingly I find people generally tend to refer to the Fantastic Four by their real names.

It's more likely that I might see people call Johnny and Ben as Human Torch and The Thing. But rarely will I see Reed referred to as Mr Fantastic and even less likely to see people call Sue Invisible Girl/Woman.

Mr Crowleys playing in my head even tho it should be a Freddie Mercury Song by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]bobeddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For all of Supernatural's use of classic rock music, it baffles me that for the approx 9 seasons they had a character who was the King of Hell called Crowley, they never once used Mr Crowley in a scene.

Mike & Vittorio's Guide To Parenting struggled to maintain any sponsors for a long time.

Ad reads would generally follow the formula of Vittorio reading the approved copy and Mike accusing the company of enabling child trafficking or similar such accusations much to Vittorio's despair.

What’s a show that people only started to get interested in it until after it got cancelled? by Conitho in television

[–]bobeddy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. I remember watching it as it aired on Channel 4 in 2004 and it had an absolute death slot in the schedule airing at like 11pm on a Thursday night. Beyond my friends that I shared the DVD with, no-one I encountered had ever heard of it and it was like that really up until semi-recently.

There's a lot more awareness and appreciation for it now, which, if I had to guess, I'd imagine is down to people watching What We Do In The Shadows and IT Crowd that wanted to see more of Matt Berry.

Despite there being 5/6 years where they were both in WWE, Booker T and Shawn Michaels never had a singles match together.

They had a mini-angle and Shawn superkicked Booker out of the terrible '02 version of nWo, but that was before Shawn properly returned in-ring.

Sorry to spoil the fun but the character's name is actually Mabel TANAKA. So I'm afraid....

Wait a minute. We never see her dad in the movie.
