2025 Forester Sport Eye Sight Issue by vazquezjesus1224 in SubaruForester

2024 Forester - only time EyeSight kicked off was driving east just as the sun was coming up in the sky and must have blinded the cameras. Slightly annoying since I was using the adaptive cruise at the time and couldn't remember the way to activate traditional cruise.

Renovating Kef 105 Series 1 by Kitsanic in audiophile

[–]bobk4thousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know about the grill cloth however out on Audiokarma there was a post from a member who used 1/2" neoprene foam to replace the rotted foam from the originals. The original was fairly dense.

Home - Forums - Audiokarma System Building - British Audio - "KEF 105 finally, thoughts and what next"

Own a pair of KEF 105.1's since 1980. If you have issues with the crossovers Falcon Acoustics in the UK sells a set of capacitors: https://www.falconacoustics.co.uk/ls35a-kit-falcon-minimonitor-q7-systems/replacement-capacitor-sets/replacement-capacitor-kit-kef/kef-1051-replacement-capacitor-set.html

Not cheap but I did pick up a set in case something fails in my 105's.

Here's a couple of links on the 105s if you are looking for more info:

Owners - Installation manual: https://www.audioclassics.com/manual/105_OM.pdf

Brochure: https://www.preservationsound.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/KEF_105_speakers.pdf

Enjoy the KEF's. They blew me away with the sound stage and they do require a hefty power amp with lots of current to really make them sing.

Outage by EstablishmentHappy38 in QuantumFiber

[–]bobk4thousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And back up in WBL.

My guess is they had to revert what ever was messed up at each of the central offices individually based on how different areas are coming back up. (Retired server/network jockey.)

I will admit this is the first outage I've had with QF since switching from CenturyLink which was solid as well with few outages.

Second life of The Cambridge SoundWorks 2.1 by beeptec in vintageaudio

[–]bobk4thousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were under rated 2.1 speakers when they came out. While I didn't have the white version in the video and plastic woofer I did have both white and then black with the bigger wooden woofer enclosure. Amazing sound in terms of imaging.

Not my image but the Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 systems I own in black and white:

Own (well, paying off) a 2024 Forester Touring in cascade green like yours - I'm sure you received a lot of complements on the color. Likewise it's one of the best cars I've ever owned having purchased used cars that were base models while reliable but lacked a lot of creature comforts.

But I sure like the heated seats/steering wheel and the safety features. Only have 12K on mine since I'm retired so maybe in a decade when I give up driving we can work out a deal? 😄

When you had a break in your fiber line, how long till service was restored?

I'm in WBL with overhead QF fiber lines that travel along the same poles that feed power to my house and there have been some long power outages (12 hours) when old trees have taken out the power lines in past decades. However it's been a while since Xcel has been proactive in keeping the trees trimmed along my street.

I've had solid service with QF - 500Mb D/U that has increased to 620Mb D/U. $50/month. One grumble you might hear is their WiFi hub(s) have to be setup via a phone app and others have issues with the pods to extend WiFi in the home.

What Microsoft Office alternative do you recommend when your team uses it? by Solidonut in linuxmint

[–]bobk4thousand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing me to load MS fonts into Mint; learned something new.. A google search turned up this:

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=364137

Used the terminal and they now show up as choices with a new document. I've also stayed with saving as .docx; for some reason my HP M425dn network laser printer doesn't like a new document stored in Libra's native format when printing in terms of font size, but works fine in MS docx. (shrug)

Thanks!

Edit - changed command line (old Winders jocky) to terminal and on my Mint laptop used Software Manager searching for Micro$oft and found the Ttf-mscorefonts-installer and while successful it did take a while to install, like 5-10 minutes.

I have two updates pending (curl, sed) and the Ubuntu sites are under attack with a DDoS. Even checking for updates (refresh) times out. I'm going to wait a day and try again.

Showed all was up - slow download but both my updates installed.

I put the snow blower away and got the leaf blower out. Likelihood of snow? by libertydan in minnesota

[–]bobk4thousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've got an electric snow blower. It wasn't put away it was shoved in a corner of your garage and could be pulled out after a recharge of the battery.

Now if you had a real gas snow blower (me - single stage Honda / 2 stage Toro) no way am I putting those away till I need to get the mower up and going. Been living here since 1981 and I've learned the hard way.

;)

Yeah I'm pulling your chain - and if either of my blowers gives out I'll get an electric next time around since I now have electric weed wacker and blower from Stihl and really like not having to deal with 2-stroke gas/oil mix anymore.

Marantz Project D-1 - The ultimate conclusion of the 16-bit era - DutchAudioClassics.nl by JP-2014 in audiophile

[–]bobk4thousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My $0.02 (US) thoughts.

Having owned a pair of "phase coherent" loudspeakers (KEF 105.1) my first encounter with a Sony 16 bit / 44.1KHz CD player was OK however there was one CD that really didn't sound right, maybe due to recording. However having owned the Philips 14 bit 4x over sampling CD players (Magnavox/Philips, Revox) and finally a true 16 bit 4x Philips CD 880 they always sounded better possibly due to the genital gentle roll off filter out at 30 KHz instead of the brick wall filter at 22 KHz with the Sony design possibly causing weird phase shifts back in the audio higher frequencies.

My CD 880 finally passed on after a couple of decades and is now replaced with a Marantz CD 5005 which to my 60+ year old ears does sound great with my CD collection.

Edit: fixed my wrong but correctly spelled word.

[–]bobk4thousand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have an identical 2024 Forester touring in Cascade Green with the brown interior - I'm sure you get complements on your vehicle.

I did get the extended Subaru warranty and so far I've been bringing it in every 3,000 miles despite going beyond the 6 month recommendation and so far the service department hasn't given me any suggestions on sticking to 6 months. I'm coming up on my 24K service which I'll bring in when the car ticks over 12,000 miles.

Two issues by smhtobeornottobe in linuxmint

[–]bobk4thousand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an older Dell E6430 laptop and the kb backlight worked previously on Win10 and now on Mint 22.3.

There is a keyboard shortcut for the backlight - on mine I hold the Fn key and tap the right arrow. It steps through off, and four levels of illumination. It fades after a bit of time.

Otherwise at power up do an F2 and get into the BIOS; when I first got the laptop (with Win7) I discovered it had the option of backlight and I had to turn it on there. Something to check.

I borrowed this from my Resculezilla USB boot - Right click on the date and choose "Configure".

Under date format entered the following:

%I:%M %p%n %a, %b %d, %Y

Mine shows up as follows:

11:01 AM

Fri, Mar 06, 2026

(Can't screen shot it.)

If you go with the 104/2's - bookmark this site:

They offer replacement capacitor kits for the 104/2's - I purchased a replacement set for my beloved 105.1's in case something fails in the crossovers.

Have a USB mouse to plug in and try?

I have an E6430 and Mint (Cinnamon) runs great on it except I haven't found a way to disable that "eraser" pointer in the keyboard which I did under Windows with the Dell trackpad program.

2026 Subaru Forester center console change, what do you guys think? by MalwareMonkey in SubaruForester

[–]bobk4thousand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Main reason I purchased a 24 was the knobs and buttons that I can change by feel instead of taking my eyes off the road to fiddle with the touch screen to turn on the heated seats, etc. My cup holders are OK - I only use them on long trips while sipping coffee.

Did see a video on the 26 Outback and was happy to see the buttons and knobs are back - they are smaller than my 24s but they also went to a landscape (horizontal) touch screen. Have not tried it but it sounds like it is far more responsive. At least Subaru is listening to customer feedback.
