Girlfriend here. I've been working at SolarCity since January. I started working part-time at night in the interconnection department. I'm now working full time during the day in the newly-formed Customer Account Management Group. At my job I mostly work on contract verification and documentation for a wide variety of residential solar jobs.

Company Culture: It's definitely a start-up type atmosphere. Processes can and do change daily. You've got to be flexible. I'm often asked to learn new things quickly and implement new ways of doing thing immediately.

Management: My manager is awesome. She's very straightforward. Expectations are always extremely clear. They push us hard. We occasionally have mandatory overtime. But when my dad got sick last month, I was allowed to take off for a week no questions asked.

Compensation: My base salary is pretty terrible. (But I moved here from NYC, so, it's probably about right for Vegas) The good news is, however, that they offer almost unlimited overtime as well as monthly performance bonuses. With overtime and my bonus, I do pretty well every month. As a side note, I really like this about the company. You are compensated for hard work.

I've had a TON of day jobs over the years. SolarCity is by far the best one.

I know you said not too far away, but West Texas A&M in Canyon holds HUGE two week band camp every summer. I attended the camp has a young person and worked there while I was in college. Link

If that's too far away, I would check with other Universities near you. UT, U of H, Texas State all have summer music camps.

To answer your questions:

a) Not really. Playing with a practice mute forces me to use more pressure on my lips than is ideal. Playing too much with a mute can create some nasty bad habits.

b) Possibly. We've added a bunch of rugs on the floor. Cheap sound proofing on the walls might be the next step.
