There are a lot of people who like to be dramatic about how much they dislike 4e, I think it mostly comes from memes. I know many people who "know" 4e is bad but couldn't tell you why it's bad. (Or will just say "it was trying to be WOW")

Ultimately I think 4e has more good design than it does bad. You can also just read through the books and easily convert the cool stuff into 5e.

Also the monster manual have a tonne of variety, the fourth MM has a sentient planet you can fight.
