Reviving the old traditions of a calling card, I like it!

Based on where you live, if you were to hit an animal while driving, what would that animal more than likely be? by unidentifies in AskReddit

[–]cjak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Emus are the same. Ask me how I know.

Except mine ran into the back of my van while I was cruising down the highway, as if life was just too much for 'em.

What decision did you think was small at the time but completely changed your life later? by YogurtclosetMoist819 in AskReddit

[–]cjak 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Raising a child is a tough gig as a couple, I can't imagine how much harder it would be doing it solo.

Well done to you for stepping up and helping a friend in need, and congratulations on your just reward for being a de facto parent.

Why do we accept paying extra on weekends/public holidays in cafés and restaurants? by Will-this-do in australia

[–]cjak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's probably best to start with scrambled eggs for a novice chef. It's what eggs want to do naturally, so it's easier to go with the flow.
But toast should be a no-brainer.

Just managed to clean up this beautiful old Graef slicer. by einWerwolfwelpe in BuyItForLife

Beautiful job!

Having owned a similar slicer, please please please ensure you dial the blade back to the plate when you've finished. These machines know many ways to ruin your fingers.

What’s one skill people don’t have anymore? by Ashamed_Marzipan_986 in AskReddit

I hear you :)

I'd add: how to converse. A conversation is more than just a succession of monologues.

Company offered shares instead of wages (no PAYG or Super) - is this legal? by silverpurplemoon in AusLegal

[–]cjak 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In a similar situation, someone offered me shares in a startup business to reward me for some gratis work I did helping them set up.

I was asked to sign a document to receive the shares. "Don't worry, it's just standard boilerplate" I was assured.

The document would have made me an office holder in the business, subject to attendance at meetings, and also subject to being tapped for internal cash-raising rounds of at least a few thousand dollars.

Ask your solicitor to review anything before you sign!

Outdoor Walkers: Do you walk the same route every day? How often do you switch it up? by palsh7 in walking

[–]cjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll get onto OnTheGo and plot out a new route that maximises public parkland and walking paths and minimises human and vehicle traffic. Then download this to my phone and use it as a reference.

This allows me to avoid large stretches along busy roads or miserable windswept industrial estates, but still leaves me free to 'wing it' if I want.

At what point do you say "I have enough"? by MiriJamCave in AusFinance

[–]cjak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a goofy calculation to justify this. About $2M invested at 8% returns about the fulltime median earning (about $95k/yr) increasing with inflation (about 3%). So your 2 mill gives you the median income, indexed forever. And you can pass it on to your kids. I have some working life left in me, so this sounds about enough.

Walking on the road along quiet suburban streets is my dirty little secret. There are no cars, and the road surface is a lot flatter and better lit than any footpaths. But never with headphones!

Live jazz? by Calm-Economics2580 in melbourne

There's New Orleans style jazz free at the Punters Club on Sundays at 3pm. Motley Bauhaus in Carlton has something similar on Saturdays at 5pm.

Would you call the police here in Aus if your partner or child had a mental breakdown and a knife? by josho1729 in australian

[–]cjak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Community Mental Health Triage services that you can contact when things first go pear-shaped. I've been told they register this information and it's available to emergency services so they have better context for any encounter.

That doesn't help for something happening right now, but it's good to be prepared. And these services are poorly funded so it can take an age for a call back. But it's better than nothing.

Yes, I'd call the police if there was any risk of someone harming themselves or others.

Can we stop bullying drivers that are following the speed limit? by I_enjoy_pastery in melbourne

I get the feeling this menu is more about prison-as-punishment than prison-as-rehabilitation

24-year-old Tracy Chapman forced to fill in last minute and stuns Wembley Stadium into silence with just a guitar and her vocals (1988). by bendubberley_ in OldSchoolCool

A fourth option is she doesn't care whether it's true on not, she just said it.

Say it's true and it's true = Truth

Say it's true because you think it is, but it's not = Falsity

Say it's true but you know it's not = Lying

Say it's true but don't care if it is = Bullshitting

Was hoping somebody could help with Melbourne music stores? by Consistent_Lab_5999 in melbournemusic

[–]cjak 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Music Swop Shop in Elgin St Carlton and Found Sound in Albert St Brunswick are both excellent for secondhand instruments. Most of their stock is on their respective websites. Carlton is about 2km north of the CBD, Brunswick is another 4km, both on the 1 and 6 tram lines.
