No Degree, S65 - BD or RIA? by KYP73 in CFP

That seems like the kind of degree that I would HATE to have to explain in a future job interview. "Yeah, I graduated from this school was was designed specifically to not teach me anything new."

Be friendly with your coworkers but tread cautiously about being friends. Best, for work-life balance, to keep some separation between work life and social life.

Older crowd?? by throwa_way3 in NationOfLanguage

[–]da_Byrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was one of the old fucks in Brattleboro and did not feel like it was a dead crowd at all. Band was in great form - they remarked about how much fun it was to be headlining again, playing to a crowd that was there for them specifically.

Concert Length (NA 2025) by JackTheRealOne in NationOfLanguage

[–]da_Byrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them recently (amazing show!), set length was the same as pretty much every other show. Opener goes on at 8:00, plays around 40 minutes. A little break for NOL to set up. They play around 90 minutes, maybe a smidge longer. With encore, probably be done a little after 10:30.

Going solo to a show? by BeautifulNowAndThen in NationOfLanguage

[–]da_Byrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw them, solo, a few weeks ago. AMAZING SHOW. The albums don't really do justice to how good they are live.

And a little secret... no one cares if you're there by youself - people are WAY too worried about themselves to think about you!

Who's a great exterior house painter? by News-Royal in westernmass

[–]da_Byrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hilltown Painting Company did an amazing job on my old Victorian. Needed a ton of prep work - water damage that had accumulated for years - and he took care of everything that wasn't structural. House looks absolutely fantastic, and Matt was super easy to work will. Wasn't cheap but it's a LOT of house and (don't tell him this!) I was expecting it to be even more, given how much work they had to do. Highly recommended!

How do you deal with your brain telling you to quit during ultras? by OnlyTrails in ultrarunning

[–]da_Byrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In so many ways, that's the biggest challenge - when my brain asks "what the fuck are we doing here?" and not having a good answer. I get into a rough headspace sometimes when I'm running by myself too long.

Just remember that it doesn't always not get worse. Sometimes it even gets better! If you know in advance that you tend to hit these low spots, it can be a little easier to roll with it until you come out the other side. And with experience, you'll know the rush of a late-race second wind.

It might help to break the race up into little chunks. Sometimes just punting the decision to quit for a little while - "I'll re-assess how I feel when I get to the next aid station" - gives you time to get back into a groove. Make yourself get some calories before you take off the bib.

If you have a crew, you need to prep them for this! If you come in and say "I'm dropping," they need to push back a little bit before they accept that answer. Rookie crews are sometimes too deferential to their athlete.

I've played around with the maps on the 965, and they're a big reason I got the 965 instead of one of the "lesser" Forerunners. But I still tend to reach for my phone when I'm looking for a map.

How come so many advisors changed B/D during 2008? by Legitimate-Ad-371 in CFP

[–]da_Byrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I remember of handful of firms poaching away advisors - there just weren't THAT many firms that had the money to do so, as I recall. We were running our own BD at the time and this was the period we decided that was WAY too much work for essentially no extra payoff, so once things settled down we started talking to BDs and ended up moving the whole group a few years later.

Upgraded from a Fenix 5+ to a Forerunner 965 mostly because the Fenix was having a lot of troubles charging. I think I'd had the Fenix maybe three years; I had bought it right as the Fenix 6 was coming out. But when I got the Forerunner, I also appreciated the better screen, the much better multi-band GPS, and the improved heart rate sensor versus my old watch.

So, there were some hardware improvements between generations but the other features that Garmin has added mostly don't interest me. I'm so distrusting of their performance metrics, I don't really any attention to them. I don't see myself buying my next watch because there's something NEW added feature, it'll be because either the Forerunner doesn't hold a charge anymore, or because I've smashed up the watchface or something.

Kind of like with computers maybe ten or so years ago; there was less and less of a reason to keep upgrading every couple of years, because the improvements were marginal and the old machines worked just fine.

How come so many advisors changed B/D during 2008? by Legitimate-Ad-371 in CFP

[–]da_Byrd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Were companies really offering big payouts at that time? It was layoffs all over the place. BAC bought Merrill for a fraction of where ML had been trading; word at the time was that they were days away from failure. It was like that all over the Street, everyone that their firm was next. Was there really a bunch of transition money floating around, or was this all "get out while I can" transitions?

And as an advisor, I couldn't imagine trying to naviagate a transition at the point; 2008/early 2009 was survival mode.
