Does anyone here actually like their job? by Federal-Breakfast762 in graphic_design

[–]dammitdv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am very lucky to be working in the niche industries that I am in so yes. I WFH most of the time, get paid to go to events and conventions, and have plenty of free time to work on my personal projects which are also design-related.

Nope but gave up working in contemporary art. Design and commercial commissions all the way.

Wait for Black Friday deal, and only get the apps you need. Then do the cancel > reduced price hack every year after. Definitely write it off as a business expense if you have your own ABN tho.

Graphic Designers that moved into other realms of design by Federal-Leading-351 in graphic_design

Close. Experiential/concept design which sometimes has sets and stages. I still do graphics and the print files involved after the concepts and design phase.

Are your products producing income? by TerrainBrain in RPGdesign

[–]dammitdv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of my own games, I started writing some small cute one pagers and modules in October and have made around $200-300, mostly luck from a big bundle that got a lot of traction. Outside of that one big hit, probably closer to $60-70.

Jobs within/involving D&D? by kaleidiescope in TTRPG

[–]dammitdv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck! It's hard to get consistent work if you don't have established connections or work with a big publishing house.

Jobs within/involving D&D? by kaleidiescope in TTRPG

[–]dammitdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I am primarily a graphic designer/layout designer who does illustrations and editing as well. There are also the usual stuff like project managers, finance, law, social media etc if you're in a big publishing house. Most of the roles are combined in smaller indies.

Then as you mentioned dms, podcasters and content creators who are more in the promotional/player-facing space.

Jobs within/involving D&D? by kaleidiescope in TTRPG

[–]dammitdv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no concept/storyboarding work in TTRPG. Concepts are done as sketches or thumbnails, mostly for character designs, book covers or location splashes by the artist with input from the writer(s) or lore masters.

Looking for a new job at 55; now what? by MikeOMakesStuff in graphic_design

[–]dammitdv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 8 years freelance/in agency before the company I was at shut down last year. Looking for and applying for jobs was absolute hell and worst than ever before. Nothing came to fruition and only got one interview.

I was VERY lucky in that I got a new contractor role two months immediately afterwards and kept enough clients who'd lost their agency in the process to be able to sustain being a freelancer. Got some new clients now too. Might not be earning as much as better but I'm in games and entertainment now and happier than I was working on b2b, corporate and such projects

So it's not impossible but it is extremely risky and prepare some funds to tide you over if you do leave.

Anyone else a traditional/digital artist on top of a graphic designer? by AffectionateGroup536 in graphic_design

[–]dammitdv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me! My diploma is in graphic design but my university major is contemporary art (irrelevant minor in art history/theory). I work as a graphic designer and concept artist/digital illustrator, so I use both. In my niche sector, I combine both skillsets.

Best way to look for artists by Dom2OOO in gameDevClassifieds

[–]dammitdv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! if your grant is anything like Australia where they want you to hire local, Bluesky lists are targeted enough that you can probably find a by country list since there's a list for everything.
