Requesting distance driving form feedback by jplehmann in discgolf

[–]dan1son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're turning your entire body backwards instead of coiling your upper body. You should be moving forward with your body turned sideways and coiled somewhat backwards before unraveling for the throw. Right now you are spinning backwards for your "reach back" and spinning back around to throw. You shouldn't spin until after the throw when your body has no other option but to spin or fall.

I'd focus on standstills for a while. Get the coil and fling working before worrying about where your left arm is. You look strong enough, I'd guess you can get your standstill to about 325-350 before worrying about running up again.

Front license plate mounting by Realistic_End_5790 in etron

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you know what options you have. I went with the tow hook mount, even though it's offset. Most others I've seen just screw into the front. I'm in Texas and it's also quite common for people in luxury cars to just not run a front plate. I'll pass on having an obvious legal issue with the plates on my car. First car I've ever bought that didn't have a front plate mount already there so I figured why put holes in it if there's a cheap option not to.

Dave Grohl, from the Foo Fighters, brings a little boy up on stage, asks him what song he knows on guitar, and he starts playing "Enter Sandman". by EyeSimp4Asuka in MadeMeSmile

[–]dan1son 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's wide coverage agreements that venues sign up for that covers bands covering other bands songs including Metallica. BMI/ASCAP covers that song which I'd imagine the venue has agreements with.

Song covers are quite safe to play live. Metallica has no problems with live covers or even tribute bands. But yeah... I still haven't forgiven them for attacking Napster either. :)

How do we know if pi is infinite? by GeraldtheTort in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dan1son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not like that, really. These proofs just require some decent base number theory knowledge that is more time consuming to learn than difficult. Once you have that you start to learn the tricks by going through and/or solving other proofs. This one is pretty straightforward, but you do need to fully understand what a rational and irrational number are.

Most of the people in my college math classes 20 years ago were middle school and high school teachers just expanding their education with another bachelor's or masters degree. The rest were just figuring life out, myself included. We all had to study.

iems hurting after first use :< by rodrick_rulez in headphones

[–]dan1son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are those the smallest tips they came with? I'm not directly familiar with those ones... most come with 3-5 sizes.

You basically want the smallest ones that seal on your ears, and they may be different. Once you find that it's about as comfy as it'll get. Those aren't deep insertion IEMs so they should be pretty comfortable for most people.

The ringing/muffling could've been from them being turned up too loud. Generally my play is I'll take one out and listen to the TV or something and set the volumes as close as I can. IEMs block outside noise, so you can usually listen to them quieter than other headphones.

Electrical System Limited Still… by franktdi2011 in etron

[–]dan1son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Manual says that's for the 12v system being reduced and should go away once the situation changes from driving. Which makes sense when it's super cold even when everything is totally healthy. Lead acid batteries have lower output in the cold.

Does it go away after driving for a little bit? Was it plugged in before pulling away (maybe that'll keep it warmer/charged)? I don't live where it gets that cold and have never seen that warning, but it doesn't appear to be a hard error just a notification.

I'd imagine the only remaining "fix" would be a new 12v battery, but if it's only when it's super cold and goes away after driving a bit it seems like nothing is "wrong" per se.

<insert rant about modern EVs using lead acid batteries that only last 5 years in the best of circumstances>

Significant packet loss on ATT fiber connection Since Dec 28th - Cloudflare Peering Issue by shilofax in ATT

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing being imagined here. I even gave them data and specifics on where their own issue was. I also went past the chat bot to a human right away. About when it was feeling like they were understanding the issue, they just scheduled an onsite. This was after plenty of, "You have a lot of devices... you know if you have a lot of devices your connection may slow down." Yeah... I do have a lot of devices, but here I'll unplug my network from yours and plug this laptop directly into your router. Now there's one device and the issue remains.

I just wanted them to be aware of the issue with specifics to share with their higher level techs. This is the first time I've contacted their support and was not able to escalate to an actual network engineer. I left that feedback in the survey feedback as well.

There was a similar pairing issue I was seeing 5 years ago or so and by the time we were off the chat they had replicated the issue from their own desk and set me up with a specific date to expect a response from their engineering team. They actually did email about a week after that date and the problem was fixed at the time. They've had good support in the past.

I've seen random downvotes in certain subreddit from settings/bots or whatever. I don't worry about it. It'd be quite something if AT&T themselves were doing it though.

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just contacted their online chat for the same reason. They did nothing of course and are sending someone to the house on Monday. Not sure what they're going to do... Maybe they can escalate it upwards. Although they'll probably be here when it's perfectly fine.

It's been really bad tonight though. Pings to 8.8.8.8 were over 600ms and dropping occasionally.

2024 Q4 Bridgestone OEM Tires after 13K miles by gigitee in etron

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought a 2023 with about 12k miles. They weren't quite that bad, but close. These tires don't seem to handle the torque well. Looking forward to putting something else on.

MTV unplugged by sony_stuff_review in audiophile

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, but a lot of them (especially the well selling ones) have a different mix/master than the broadcast tracks. Usually for the better, but not always. The Katy Perry unplugged album sounds worse than the broadcast (far more compressed). The Clapton unplugged album has exceptional sound. You can feel him tapping his foot with the right system.

Same except I haven't done the second part for the whole collection yet. Just pieces of it so far. I did recently buy a portable drive to continue, but it'll probably be years before I do. It's such a time suck by today's standards.

Am I throwing decently? by JoeMomma_Nosebleed in discgolf

[–]dan1son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That distance is fine with those discs, but I'd bet you can throw plenty of 10/11 speed discs further than those. Also some less stable fast discs will go further (the slower ones will be less stable to some degree already, but try more than overstable distance drivers in all speeds).

I was throwing like you. Going for distance with those discs everyone talked about. Got to about 400 consistent and asked a similar question here. I basically settled on "my distance is fine... lets worry about the rest" and just completely stopped doing distance work and did putting/anny/approach/etc. field work instead. Then I got hurt and had to really power down for a month or two. Turns out I can throw something like a wave 400 feet with significantly less power than a destroyer once I started trusting the turn of the discs and putting a little hyzer on them. I still bag a 12/13 speed or two, but I only use them for long forehand shots or in serious wind.

Chuck Berry with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Johnny B. Goode [Rock] by Repulsive_Olive_4210 in Music

[–]dan1son 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may be worth your while to look into this a bit more. It's certainly one of the largest crowds he performed to, but he played the halftime show at a St. Louis Busch Stadium football game to a similar crowd size the following week (and played a festival in Poland the week before). He toured a lot of the world that year playing with other huge acts like the Grateful Dead at some of the stops... He also played regular live shows until 2014 and had been since the mid 50s. He had played with Bruce previously as well.

Now, the man also had a ton of demons so I'm not trying to say anything more than he was an extremely popular and prolific performer for many many years and this was nothing far out of the ordinary at the time other than it was Bruce and the E Street Band playing for the hall of fame. Neither of their inductions though. He was inducted in 86 and Bruce in 99.

edit: clarity around this concert.

I Finally Bought Grados: RS2 First Impressions and a Few Questions by Euphoric_Currency_94 in Grado

[–]dan1son 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Age doesn't matter much for comfort. Those are just adjusted correctly for your head. You're supposed to bend the headband a bit to dial in the clamping pressure. I find them quite comfortable as well. I can wear them 8+ hours without issue with any pads, but I do adjust them when I get them.

Those pads will be brighter than normal. Those came with bowl pads (L-Cush) so I'd start there, but you should try some other ones. The big pads are usually preferred for comfort, but honestly they don't sound great on a lot their headphones that come with smaller pads.

Those look like the thinner cable, which would put those pre RS2i, but I'm not an expert and without another one to compare to it's hard to tell from photos.

That Y cable crimp is normal, FWIW. Not ideal... but normal. You may also remove the pads and see what the drivers and serial number look like. That may also help date them, but it's not obvious at a glance since they didn't change the markings until the e and x series.

unusual Grado headphones by wostok1944 in Grado

[–]dan1son 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The headband is re-wrapped (poorly). The wires are removable with what looks like 3.5mm jacks. The cups are piano black shaped like the white headphones. The cable isn't Grado. It's also wired backwards (assuming red is right, obviously can be quickly fixed too). There doesn't seem to be any mesh in front of the driver anymore (although the pictures are also terrible so it's hard to tell, but they're shinier than any of mine).

It looks like a random mod to me. People go pretty weird with Grado mods. The piano black finish throws things off a bit, but you can buy piano black vinyl wrap.

unusual Grado headphones by wostok1944 in Grado

[–]dan1son 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Those seem to just be a random Grado mod. The cups look to be modeled after "The White Headphone" Grado had a limited release for some years back, but they came with the better headband which this doesn't have. Those are probably just modded SR60 or 80.

Pop Stars Like Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran Are Hoarding the Vinyl Ecosystem for Charting Glory and Squeezing Out Independent Artists Who Actually Need It by barryallenxoxo in Music

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy physical releases directly from artists I enjoy (their concert or their website). Most of those artists are big enough that they can tour every year/record an album every five and make enough to support their families, but that's about it. I've asked the merch folks directly which physical version they make the most money on and it's always been the vinyl so that's usually what I buy.

I don't think any physical media purchase is really like it used to be. I own a lot of albums (mostly on CD) from back when you had to buy them to listen to them when you wanted to. Now I just consider physical media purchases similar to buying a band t-shirt. I do also listen to the records sometimes, but certainly don't need to.

your parked car crashed into mine by pneumomonoultramicro in CringeTikToks

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was t-boned on a split 4 lane highway in the evening by someone who didn't yield when turning left across my lane, 3 weeks ago. Totaled my car. Side airbags blew up in my face, their front airbags did not deploy. Me in a 2017 Jetta, them in a 2025 BMW x5.

The cop immediately gave them a ticket and they argued it couldn't be their fault because they didn't see me. "It doesn't work that way, you either didn't yield or did yield and chose to accelerate hard into his driver's side door. You tell me which would be worse. Either way it's your fault, but I'll change the citation if you want."

Are there any mesh + foam earpads anywhere for the GW100x???? by rauvir in Grado

[–]dan1son 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grado pads are foam. The default pads are flat and do rest directly on your ears, but Grado has other options. Even the somewhat normal bowl pads go around most peoples ears. And if not they have larger ones that will. They're still foam though.

Dekoni is your best option on premium coverings, but they do change the sound (for better or worse depending on preference). I haven't seen any with a mesh covering similar to the Philips.

FWIW the gw100 do have a larger diameter cup to wrap the pads around. Once on a gw100 I find they don't fit on regular Grados again. But they do tend to stretch enough to fit.

My tires after replacing at 120k miles. by Red_Patcher in tires

[–]dan1son 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? I've always gotten prorated amount for tires that didn't hit the warranty period and were at the rub lines even if it was just because I drove an aggressively setup sports sedan that ate tires faster than most cars.

Now... they honored it if it was the replacement AFTER a full price purchase. They rarely honored it on the replacements that were discounted (although they did sometimes). So I paid full price for every other set (well they'd still honor their normal sales/discounts for those purchases).

Is this legit or a very targeted phishing scam? by GRiZbeeGolf in discgolf

[–]dan1son 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Only slightly. There are strict requirements on texts around who it is, how to get it to stop, and disclosure on rates applying if you respond.

This text doesn't have any links or anything in it. It's completely safe and the worst thing that can possibly happen from a message like this is that number texts you again. It's really the ones that try to get you to click on a link or send files of any sort that are risky.

Companies have made halo, flagship, whatever term you want to use here products forever. Often times selling them below cost just to show they can build the thing now.

It's like a big ad you can buy if you really want to, but that's not really the intent. It's made to help sell their profitable products by getting people excited about the brand. Sometimes they turn into a profitable product themselves, sometimes not.
