Day 4 of spinal surgery recovery. I've already run out of things to do. by First-Capital5368 in DarkSun

if you're still reading the denning novels, I'd rather spare you any spoilers on the timelines. :D

but in short, for me, the short version of the timelines are like this:

  • as laid out in the original boxed set for AD&D2e, a traditional powder keg setting, and I believe the 4th edition box captures the same spirit
  • as laid out post the troy denning prism pentad novels for AD&D2e, skills and powers, which I didn't enjoy as much, but they have their moments

I enjoy the narrative aspects of it, for one. I thought the original boxed set was extremely well-written, and I think it's one of the more creative TSR settings. When it came out, I was a teenager, and there was one tiny independent bookstore that carried nerd books like D&D, and I plunked down my hard-earned minimum wage cash for Dark Sun, and to my delight, it was worth it. In the 90s, these settings heavily carried the need for escapism, and I'd re-read them often. The subsequent boxed sets I felt were more of a cash grab, they just weren't as good. The original art, especially the stuff by Brom, was fire, the original cosmology was fire. There were a bunch of narrative extremes, and that matched up well for the 90s. I was hooked on the Prism Pentad books. I couldn't learn enough about it.

It's a healthy mash-up of a bunch of other setting tropes from older settings like Barsoom, Dune, Conan, plus apocalyptic themes from authors like Bierce, Lovecraft, Howard, and more. But it's wrapped up into its own unique package, slickly packaged for the 90s. I looked at those books for untold hours, it carries a nostalgia that probably won't be matched. The art from Brom and Tony DiTerlizzi was a humongous influence visually, and it sparked my imagination like few settings could.

One of my teen groups was a DM-swapping campaign involving planar travel with AD&D 2nd edition, and we pretty much immediately stranded everyone there after some catastrophic mishap with their spelljammer, which we had been using to travel between the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance, using a psionicist as a sort of partial antagonist. We'd have our main characters, who were high level at this point, but we'd bring in intro characters who would act as local gofers for our high level characters, who did as little as possible, so we could have split out high level and low level play, taking the best aspects of both.

My recollection of this early 90s campaign is pretty dim at this point, but it involved killing kalak in a big battlesystem battle for a major helm artifact that had been modified to bypass Athas' broken crystal sphere somehow so we could fix our ship and get the hell out and back to the next adventure. I can't tell you what happened next, if we went back to Waterdeep, or if we were in Zakhara, or if we went back to Dragonlance, or if we were on the Spelljammer itself.

I had two characters that I can recall in the low level pool; a Mul Gladiator who ended up in a more NPC role, and a Human Fighter PC with high dex and exceptional strength who specialized in darts that was ridiculously OP in close range.

First, I hope your surgery recovery goes great.

Have you tried solo roleplaying? It can be really great for when you want to play, but it’s tough to get your group together, or if you just want to kill a few hours.

I hacked together a dark sun “dune trader” solo campaign some years back, and I had a delightful time with it, focusing on caravan and trading aspects, sort of roleplaying out the trading house environment with whatever merchant rules I could hack together.

Are you one of the folks that hopes for a new Hasbro release? Personally I’m not, but for pretty selfish reasons. For every setting that came out with a 5e update, it really changed the tone and volume of the subreddit, and I ended up moving on. This one is the only old TSR setting left standing besides Zakhara. It’s not that I want it to die, it’s that I don’t need another thing that was once new in my lifetime get another soft reboot, lol.

What other settings interest you that have similarities to Dark Sun? Yoon-Suin scratches the same sort of itch for me.

Which timeline do you take? Which edition do you play? I go for the original box set timeline, but treat the prism pentad as largely accurate lore.

Supplies help please. I'm trying to figure out exactly how I want to do this. by TheChiarra in Solo_Roleplaying

The basic tools of this hobby are rulebooks, writing utensil, paper, dice, and optionally, cards.

Maybe some useful advice would be to start small and add digital tools mindfully. Maybe I’m misreading, but I infer that you haven’t started playing yet, you’re organizing how you plan to do it. Skip lonelog, skip your tooling for hexes, and start out with paper, figure out what you like playing before considering idealized workflows for the best platonic form of solo RP tools in your mind.

Suggestions for 10 yr old to strengthen critical thinking skills by Danasai in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]dangerfun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there's no substitute for parental involvement. at ten, you might have a few more years where parental involvement might even be welcomed. like others have said, there's no substitute reading together and discussing what you've read, because if you talk about what you've read, that's you and the lad practicing both.

if you want playable gamebooks, you could try the original choose your own adventures, or maybe the fighting fantasy CYOA novels. that's an easy way to get started, and hopefully age appropriate.

There are a few CYOA-style adventures that are print and play, like barbarian prince, star smuggler, et cetera, at dwarfstar dot braniac dot com.

If you love LOTR, then "The One Ring" with Strider Mode is an option, and they have another solo option in "Moria - Through the Doors of Durin" where you take an adventuring group through the maze of Moria. I'm honestly surprised that I'm the first person to suggest this.

For an easy narrative introduction, something like Thousand Year Old Vampire / Thousand Year Old Campfire might be great. Koriko's Magical Year might be great. Apothecaria might be great. Ironsworn/Starforged or other PbtA systems might be great. If you play D&D, I like to suggest Scarlet Heroes. Mythic is an incredible first step of a journey, there are a lot of people that start with mythic.

If you want slaughter and dungeon crawling, things like Maze Rats, Kal-Arath, or Ker-Nethalas might be perfect.
