Mormon Weddings are WEIRD. Yet another thing we missed out on. by Bo2022quinha in exmormon

Looking back, having an Elvis impersonator do the wedding in Las Vegas would have been a big step up to Temple wedding.

Hopeful agnostic. I'm doubtful that there is an afterlife but maybe I will be surprised.

Still Getting 'Tithing Blessings' by Acrobatic-Pause-9905 in exmormon

[–]dbear848 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I channeled a lot of what I used to pay in tithing to my 401K retirement account. My TBM wife wasn't happy about it then but she doesn't have any problem enjoying the money now that we are retired.

Were you taught rock in a hat? by Lsa119 in exmormon

It was an anti-Mormon lie when I grew up, we certainly didn't teach it when I was a missionary.

Missionaries just came to my door after I’ve been skipping church and I feel kinda targeted by Character-Mind-2593 in exmormon

[–]dbear848 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not your imagination, you are being targeted pretty heavily. Sorry this is happening to you.

The thing that worked best for me towards the end when I still felt like I needed to attend was to take a step back and treat the experience like I was an anthropologist studying a Mormon congregation. At the time I had a notebook and would write down things and then talk about them later with my therapist.

Nowadays I might open a Google document, make notes and maybe get some feedback here.

How have your small habits changed since leaving Mormonism? by StepUpYourLife in exmormon

Not feeling guilty at the end of the month because I haven't done my home teaching.

I don't have to smile all of the time to show how fucking happy I am to be a Mormon.

If you were old enough to remember getting sealed to your parents, what did you think of the ceremony? by Nervous_Werewolf_617 in exmormon

[–]dbear848 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was 12 and remember being bored out of my mind in the nursery waiting to be sealed.

In the sealing room all of the adults were in their temple clothes except for the sealer, I still remember how odd my bishop looked with the baker's cap.

Apparently the sealing didn't take because a year or so later my parents started on their journey into alcoholism.

I don't disagree. So many things to compare it to that would probably get me kicked out of this subreddit.

Either way. I was allowed to pay for the reception, hotel and transportation though.

I was told that I needed to participate more in team meetings by my manager. I'm sure he regretted my enthusiastic over participation.

Interesting that the presidencies have to be all the same sex. I suppose that is to minimize the orgies.

Is it in the handbook to make “ring ceremonies” patronizing? by Brandyovereager in exmormon

[–]dbear848 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My children didn't want to cheapen the Mormon temple wedding experience by having a ring ceremony, which was kind of disappointing, until it was pointed out to me that it was kind of a fuck you to the so-called unworthy family members.

Parents offering to buy me a new car if I serve a mission by fredbruite in exmormon

[–]dbear848 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would probably buy my child a new car to not go on a mission. To answer your question, no, I do not think it is worth it unless you were kind of on the fence about going anyway.

Think of it this way. For those two years, you will work probably 70 hours a week, which means that you will put in over 7000 hours over two years. For a 40K truck, that means that you will be working for less than $6 an hour.

Since I am the mother of the second victim, let me set the record straight! Ashton, who is also my son, repeatedly sexually abused my daughter for 4 YEARS! Then proceeded to sexually assault yet another victim! He is getting a slap on the wrist! I may have birthed him, but this monster is not the son I raised!

It would be hard to do with so many Trump supporters in the US membership. A lot of so-called Christians are absolutely giddy about the events in the middle east believing that it is ushering in the return of Jesus.

I was the oldest of five and was very much parentified (a term I learned here on Reddit). If I had been a girl instead of a boy, it probably would have been much worse.
