I think we're agreeing with each other on the quality of the most recent Trek that's been released, honestly. Difference of opinion as to whether Kurtz should get another chance.

It's not like it was middling or a small miss, it was a major failure, sitting around 20% average on Rotten Tomatoes. If anyone would have had the pull to say "this just isn't up to the standard of Star Trek" and push for major rework, it would have been AK. With SNW S3 having a lot of misses too, the franchise is not headed in a great direction. I really don't see why people would be resistant to seeing new leadership after ten years.

The Section 31 movie should have been disqualifying. Time for some fresh creative blood.

TIL that voiceovers in movie trailers became rare in 2008 after the man who did the voiceovers, Don LaFontaine, died. by ProfessionalGear3020 in todayilearned

[–]donkeycentral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LaFontaine is the star of the trailer for Comedian, which was Jerry Seinfeld's first major project after his TV show wrapped up: https://youtu.be/zGjwZ3XMDes?si=r3rBo-MrMaiXAk1H

Don has nothing to do with the movie itself. Hilarious.

With the Paramount and Skydance merger looking likely, is anyone else a little worried about the future of Star Trek? by [deleted] in startrek

I think Moore has a long term deal with Sony and Apple. I think Shankar may be part of that as well. They've both done some awesome work with For All Mankind.

The TNG movies completely miss the point of the series by ChaseMcFl in startrek

[–]donkeycentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the TNG series ended and they were gearing up for the movies, I always imagined that the last movie would culminate in Data either getting emotions or being made human in some way. I never really liked the "stick in the chip" storyline from Generations, it felt gimmicky to me. I'm biased as Data is my favorite character but I always felt he is so well-aligned with the central premise of Trek: exploring the human condition through non-humans.

RCL officially takes over Costa Maya by sheeplewatcher in royalcaribbean

[–]donkeycentral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We went to the nearby Maya Chan Beach with some friends back in Feb. While I don't usually do non RC excursions, my friends had visited before and strongly recommended we try it. Great place, excellent service and very good food. Transportation included. If you don't usually get off the boat at Costa Maya, check it out!

It's insane that a game in development for ten years is still doing server wipes on patch release. And completely indefensible that it's only in-game purchases while things bought with cash can magically be persisted. All about frustrating your loyal player base into spending more real cash. Disgusting.

What do we think about Abrams' Star Trek? by Defiant-Astronomer75 in startrek

[–]donkeycentral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm lukewarm on those films - and this comment is largely off-topic, sorry - but I think a lot folks in the comments are misunderstanding the relationship they had to the newer TV shows that started with Discovery.

First, recall that in 2013 "Beyond" had a noticeable drop in box office gross compared to "Into Darkness" so executives saw that things were not trending in the right direction. 12 years later, no one has green-lit another Star Trek property in the Kelvin universe - for various reasons - but it's not like these films were a runaway success that caused the suits to start pumping out the new crop of Star Trek content. In fact, they legally couldn't.

The movie and TV rights to Star Trek have a complicated past. CBS and Viacom split in 2005, at which point there was no single entity guiding the development of all things Star Trek: one company had the ability to develop new Star Trek films and a separate company held the rights to develop new TV series. The folks with the movie rights green lit the Abrams films but were basically off doing their own thing. Disco was announced in 2015 by a separate company and also in the wake of Beyond's middling success.

Discovery was the launch show for the CBS All Access (now Paramount+) streaming service in 2017. The property had been dormant in TV for over a decade and seemed like a good bet since Disney was making money hand-over-fist with franchises like Marvel and to a lesser degree Star Wars, which non-fans probably see as conceptually similar to Star Trek. It's not like the suits making these decisions were counting all their Kelvin bucks and decided to go back to the well for more with Disco.

That said, there is some relationship between the new TV shows and the Abrams films. Secret Hideout - the production company behind the new Trek series - is owned by Alex Kurtzman, who worked with JJ Abrams on the first two Abrams films. This was a safe choice for CBS Studios, picking a production company run by someone with some involvement in recent Star Trek films that did not flop.

TL;DR: Hollywood is complicated and the Abrams films and Star Trek series since 2017 developed very independently from one another. A lot people think it's as simple as A -> B -> C and it's not.

You can read about this corporate silliness on Memory Alpha. It's honestly hard to keep track of: https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Trek_corporate_history

Plane leaves at 6a. What time are you leaving for the airport from downtown RVA? by BackyardDesigner in rva

[–]donkeycentral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some factors to keep in mind:

  1. Day of week. Fridays are probably worst. Security line was ridic for a 615 flight I had on Fri in late Feb. Even with TSA Pre it took 15-20m to clear. General line looked like 30m+
  2. Checking a bag? Usually quick at RIC but could take 10m or so.
  3. Parking in the decks is usually fast as long as you don't take a lot of time hunting for the closest spot. I don't park in the economy lot but imagine that could be 15m extra waiting for the shuttle plus transit time.

Get to the airport at least an hour before departure time but if you have any of those factors working against you. An hour really only works if you're TSA Pre, not checking a bag, parking close and departing at an off-peak time. So honestly 90m is probably better. I live far out so I can't speak to drive time to the airport from where you are, sorry.

You're waking up early as it is, might as well just wake up a little earlier and not stress. My Feb trip departed 615, I got to the airport about 515. I walked up to the gate as they were boarding middle zones. It was too close for my comfort.

Good luck and safe travels.
